  • Kaikoura and Hanmer Springs are both popular destinations for tourists visiting New Zealand’s South Island, The two places are connected by two routes, both of which are highly scenic and form part of the “Alpine Pacific Touring Route” One route follows the coastal section of State Highway 1, covered in this video and the second route, often referred to as the inland route will be uploaded shortly. Both routes follow the same course between Hanmer Springs and Waiau, where this video follows Leader Road to its junction with State Highway 1, from where the road and the Conway River run in close proximity through the Seaward Kaikoura Range of mountains to Hundalee where the road turns back into the mountains to meet the Oaro River and share it’s wide valley down to the coast at Oaro. Between Oaro and Kaikoura the mountains meet the Pacific Ocean with no coastal plain, forcing the road and railway to share a narrow often man-made ledge affording some of the most spectacular coastal views to be seen anywhere in New Zealand.

      Hi Roger, It's nice to know you have enjoyed virtual traveling through New Zealand with my sister and I. We have a couple more trips to cover in South Island before catching the ferry to North Island where we explore a couple of routes away from the regular tourist trail.

    Road from Hanmer is much improved since the 90's. I never get tired of the coastal pacific route! Sooo beautiful. Wonderful how they have repaired it after earthquake

      Hi, I love all the single track road bridges on the Routes to Hanmer. I try to imagine how New Zealanders must have felt when they saw what had happened to the Kaikoura Coast, the work done to restore the road and rail routes is a credit to the nation.

    Takes me back 5 years to my visit to NZ, we did the trip from Hamner Springs to Kaikoura via the other inland route but still think Kaikoura is a fabulous place to be.

      Hi, I am editing a trip over the inland route at the moment, we have just driven across the single track bridge over the Conway River, if all goes to plan I should be uploading it in the next few days. The views along the route are stunning especially just before dropping Down to cross the Conway River. I'm glad this video bought back pleasant memories from your own trip to Kaikoura.

    Hello Tim, a German woman was recently on a TV show and a guessing team had to guess what makes this woman so special. They couldn't guess. Solution: the woman drove around the world in her own car (VW Beetle Cabrio). When asked which country is the most beautiful, she said without hesitation: "New Zealand." - Cheers, Heinz

      @Timsvideochannel1  Před 3 lety +1

      Hello Heinz, a VW Beetle Cabrio is an iconic car, a wonderful way to enjoy uninterrupted views of the wonderful countryside. For me choosing the most scenic country I've been lucky enough to visit would be an almost impossible task, New Zealand, Montenegro, Slovenia, Switzerland, Northern Spain, the Cinque Terre towns on the Italian Riviera. My conclusion would be "Wow aren't we lucky to live in such a beautiful world". I am hoping to visit Germany in January, although the situation regarding the Virus could cause me to delay my plans. Take care and stay safe. Cheers. Tim.

    Hello Tim! Now I've seen that once, if a single-track bridge is longer, there are alternative points. Another fascinating video of a beautiful landscape. It would be nice and quiet to live here. I have a suggestion for you. When you retire, you come to Austria and buy a small house, it's nice here too. I will teach you the German language. It's not that hard. I can speak a little English. I can still learn from you. Wouldn't that be a good suggestion. You won't last forever in England. With this in mind, best regards from Hans from the Mühlviertel. Keep a stiff upper lip. 😊🍺🇦🇹

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  Před 3 lety

      Hello Hans, those single track bridges are so typical of New Zealand, a bridge was required, but it had to be built on a very limited budget, the result was these wonderful single track bridges, some were built using local wood, they did the job without breaking the bank. Today many are approaching 100 years old and will be replaced with modern bridges in the near future, so it is nice to have a record of them before they disappear. Austria is the kind of place I would choose to move to if ever I left the UK, Austrians have a good work ethic and they know how to enjoy themselves. We Brits will need a stiff upper lip and a steely resolve as we bid farewell to the EU and stride forward into an uncertain new world, we might need more than one beer to get as through the next couple of years, but I'm sure that once we find our feet, things will turn out OK. If not I'll learn to speak German and move to the Mühlviertel 😊👍 Take care. Tim.

    Kind of funny when you think of it, New Zealand has these various "State Highways" yet New Zealand is not divided into states. Australia has New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania(island) plus territories, but New Zealand is mainly towns and villages clustered around four main cities, Wellington(capital), Aukland, Dunedin & Christchurch. By the way, how did you get on with that fraudulent copyright claim against you?

    • @MarvieMouse
      @MarvieMouse Před 3 lety

      I wonder if the naming has anything to do with who manages the roads. The State Highway network is managed by Waka Kotahi (NZ Transport Agency, aka a state agency) and all other local roads are managed by their local town/borough/district councils

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  Před 3 lety

      Hello Neil, I think Laura has given you the answer. The city councils from what I can make out are very important to New Zealand's transport infrastructure, especially the resurgence of the commuter rail networks around Wellington and Auckland. As for the copyright claim it was withdrawn about three weeks later, but by then the damage had been done, my viewing figures were down by more than a third, it would apear that CZcams don't promote channels that have an outstanding copyright claim against one of its videos, the fact that the claim was made in error doesn't count for much. Now I just have to build the viewing figures back up, not easy when Covid limits my opportunities to film. Take care. Tim.

    • @neilforbes416
      @neilforbes416 Před 3 lety

      @@Timsvideochannel1 One one side of the ledger, at least the fraudulent copyright claim went away. On the other side of the ledger, the damage done unduly to your channel will never be made good by CZcams as CZcams just doesn't give a damn. Trouble is, Vimeo and Amazon cost money to join(and I believe, not cheap), leaving CZcams as effectively "the only game in town". As for absence of states when you have State Highways, I wasn't thinking so much of transport on the whole, but more of regional governance.

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  Před 3 lety

      @@neilforbes416 Hi Neil, I'm just glad the mistaken claim fiasco is over, in the early days I received more than 100 claims in a short while, the music I was using had cost a lot of money from a reputable source, as time passed I persuaded most of those making the claims to white list my channel, eventually the claims dropped to one or two a week, fortunately most of the claims were released within a couple of days reducing the impact on my channel. I moved to epedemicsound.com for my music a couple of years ago, since then claims have become very rare. I remember how worried I felt the first time I contested a claim, words like legal and costs crept into the language used by CZcams, because the claims are not from YT they are from various music publishers, some of whom behaved very well, whilst others were little better than legalized scammers. I would like to see those who take too long to review claims financially penalized by enough to make them understand that their behavior is not acceptable. I have looked at other ways to share my videos, but YT still offer the most suitable platform.
      In the UK the word "State" usually refers to government itself - State aid, State schools, State owned industries etc whereas in other countries the word "State" indicates government at State level, it's all a bit confusing, here in the UK we don't have states, we have counties, local government and local authorities. Its strange how words in the English language can have different meanings in different countries.

      @@Timsvideochannel1 In Australia, State means a large chunk of land with recognisable borders, such as the 6 states, New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia on the mainland and our island state, Tasmania, plus our territories. As to music copyright, I've been using CZcams Music Library content and have thus far had no problems.
