Rainbow was formed by Ritchie Blackmore in 1975 after he left Deep Purple at the height of their fame. They were instantly successful and released a string of hit albums, with an ever changing line-up, between 1975 and 1983 when Blackmore broke up the group to join the reformed Deep Purple. This concert from their European tour in 1977 features the line-up responsible for the "Long Live Rock'n'Roll" album released later that year, including vocalist Ronnie James Dio and drummer Cozy Powell. Blackmore had to be smuggled out of Austria after a trouble with the police at a gig two nights earlier and was very late arriving in Munich, all of which seemed to inspire both the band and the audience to create a truly remarkable gig. This performance is from "Live in Munich 1977", available now.

I saw every concert from Bonnet 1979 - 1984 Joe Turner was my favorite. Singing his love songs to my girl was so easy & user friendly to remember. And then I hated seeing him going back to purple & Gillan really EFFED it up completely for me. Richie should of never of disbanded Rainbow, JLT was the perfect singer for the 80's not' Gillan.! I was so sad.

I saw them play on this tour - Glasgow Apollo, aged 15. Dio was a fantastic singer, one of the best. Blackmore was less impressive tbh, but maybe he had an off night. Saw Gary Moore play with Thin Lizzie a few years later at the same venue - still the best I've ever seen.

Dio and Blackmore were such a great match. One thing you could say about both of them is that when they went up on stage to perform live, they didn't leave a damn thing behind in the studio. You got both of them at their peak, at there best. People with that talent are born to perform live. They don't need the support of editing and engineering to do their thing and make it sound good.
If you ran into them both at a party, and had them sit down, and handed Blackmore a cheap acoustic guitar, what you'd still get would be absolute genius.

To those complaining that they're playing faster than the record...when you're in a metal or punk band and you're playing a show in front of a crowd, you naturally have shit tons of adrenaline pounding through your veins. Some people get to see an idol maybe 1 or 2 times in concert.....I marvel at the fact that when Ronnie was with ELF, and prior to his mega fame, they used to play our home town here in NE Pa an average of at least once every 2 months at a local club, and that I probably saw him at least 30 times.....not to mention the fact that it was from something like 10 feet away, as we all stood there transfixed.......still blows my mind to this day.....then all of a sudden it stopped cold turkey as ELF broke up, and we found out that he had gone with Rainbow.....then coming to the realization that indeed, he was on his way, and, more over that we had been privileged to see GREATNESS from such an early vantage point.

I met someone at a party once who claims that he saw Led Zeppelin in their disastrous 1977 tour of the United States. He also saw Rainbow in 1978. He told me that Blackmore left Jimmy Page for dead in the better guitarist category as well as the overall band performance.
NOTE - Zeppelin's performances in '77 ranged from brilliant - their shows at the LA Forum - to really poor. Rainbow still had DIO and were hungry and driven.

I heard a cover version before I heard Rainbows(was only a little kid in the 70's) on a Dio tribute CD (early 00's) by another band that was faster paced than the original and I loved it. This version is really close to that and I friggin' LOVE this version! I was fortunate enough to see Dio in '88 and 3 other times after, along with twice when he reunited with Sabbath for Heaven and Hell in the years leading up to his passing. Thought I was dreaming when he got back with them the 2nd time! My favorite singer of all time!

I like how he recites the great lyrics (after Starstruck, at about 11:20), like a poem; and the early mention of his great song Night People (~12:40), to be released many years after this live. He had things settled in his mind, always intrigued by the duality of good & evil, and the fact that **humanity** has the potential for both, here on this Earth, no need to look above or below.
All my respect to this excellent musician, and great personality.
