  • The Best of Sergei Vasilievich Rachmaninoff (1 April [O.S. 20 March] 1873 -- 28 March 1943)
    Rachmaninoff is widely considered one of the finest pianists of his day and, as a composer, one of the last great representatives of Romanticism in Russian classical music.
    Early influences of Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, and other Russian composers gave way to a personal style notable for its song-like melodicism, expressiveness and his use of rich orchestral colors.The piano is featured prominently in Rachmaninoff's compositional output, and through his own skills as a performer he explored the expressive possibilities of the instrument.

    I grew up in a very poor neighbourhood, in a very poor South American country [Chile]. At the time, the school's principal of my elementary school installed on top of school building a huge speaker system pointing in four different directions. For 6 years, every day at lunch time, he would play the only record he had: Strauss' Waltzes. It took me years to understand his message: poor people can also appreciate classical music, if only shown, if only given the opportunity to listen and understand beauty. My school's Principal is long dead, but he planted the seed of musical pleasure in my soul...and for that I am forever thankful. I want to do the same for other kids, if someone out there wishes to help...let me know ...
    AS A POSTCRIPT: I have found the grave of that wonderful man and have paid my belated respect by depositing a flower on his grave and thank him for what he did. I have also helped to build a school in a place called Lleu Lleu lake[Chile]. If someone wants to help providing funding for a musical instrument or wants to purchase it and send it directly, please let me know. thank you and bless you all

      I have the same thoughts often about my dad, he loved to play Chopins nocturnes on the piano, whenever I hear them I am usually moved to tears remembering my father. I often question why he found those particular piano pieces so compelling that he made the effort to learn to play them himself !

      It's quite incredible - the power of one man's music which, in retrospect has had such a great effect on the lives of possibly millions of people and yet being out dated by all the new music of today, has the same nostalgic intelligence of it's origin 100 or more years ago.

    I am kicking back on Thanksgiving Day and devoting time to actually LISTEN to this incredible music( instead of having it merely background music from my radio station whilst I go about my usual drives and chores.)
    I listened appreciatively as I washed dishes. Suddenly I stopped at a particularly stunning section and suddenly it came to me..."someone wrote this! He heard it IN HIS HEAD first." I am blown away by the talent, and what an understatement that is(!) So grateful for this brilliant man's work and how it blesses my life.

    My grand dad knew Rachmaninoff well when he lived next door in Beverly Hills and used to bring him his cigarettes at the end of the month. He once took my granddad on his knee and played the famous c sharp minor prelude with just one hand. My granddad said it was the most thrilling thing he had ever heard. But once Horowitz came to ask Rachmaninov a question about how best to interpret the 3rd concerto last movement. Rachmaninov apparently didn't like the tone of Horowitz's question and promptly slammed the piano shut and said, with a heavy Russian accent 'Get out, you jelly-fingered mutt'. Strange story but my granddad always used to tell us all it at dinner time. Of course, it's not true, I just wanted to write a story that would keep Rachmaninov fans glued to my text.

After learning by hard his piano concerto I convinced him he should both love his music just as we loved Mozart and Beethoven, Tschaikovsky. Well just listen to his romantic and melodious piano concerto and you will always want to listen to it again and again.

I would play his piano concerto 3-5 times in a row every day for weeks on end until it wouldn't any more. My dad bought a new record but I couldn't play it on my own any more. My poor mother got so sick of listening to it that I had to have my dad play it and only 2-3 times a week. 63 years later it is still my favorite piano concerto and I could possibly play it,badly, myself start to finish by memory.

      The October Revolution was a very progressive event in world history. And since the majority of Russians still retain pro-Soviet views, we evaluate the Great October 1917 positively. The Russian Empire was a social hell, a class-hierarchical society with barbaric capitalism in the city and feudal orders in the countryside. Tsarism threw millions of Russian men into the senseless imperialist war of 1914-1918. And this war led to tsarism to collapse and disintegration. The Bolsheviks actually saved historical Russia and turned it into the world's second superpower. So I don't understand what you are talking about.

    Vespers Opus 37 (2:18:10) -- Hearing this on a cold winter evening and it casts a golden light over the dim ending to an overcast day. Years ago I attended a service at a Russian Orthodox church in San Francisco. It was stunning. Later on I read that during these services heaven is thought to be coexistent (in time and space, right then and there). A beautiful idea that could benefit more people if widely adopted. As Einstein said, "It is better to believe than to disbelieve."

      Einstein was working on an extension of the theory of relativity and an interesting
      concept that has never been explored, as he died before its completion. He
      believed that there was a parallel universe to the earth in which resides every
      person and every memory there ever was. It is similar to the Hindu
      Universal mind. In the parallel galaxy every thought and every invention that
      ever existed was there. This could reflect earth and heaven as extensions of
      one another, together in time and space. What Einstein said, "It is better to
      believe than to disbelieve." is true if thoughts have a kind of magnetism,
      i.e., the power of positive thinking and its opposite the power of negative
      thought.

      @@TinTaBraSS777 Sergei Vasilyevich Rachmaninof was a Russian composer, virtuoso pianist, and conductor of the late Romantic period. Rachmaninoff was born into a family of the Russian aristocracy in the Russian Empire. так то не треплитесь. лучше возьмите с него пример, займитесь своей жизнью, добейтесь чего-то, а не нойте сидя перед экраном компьютера, как вам плохо живется (это я посмотрела вашу страницу, безпредел РФ) я тоже уехала из России, но это не значит, что я перестала быть русской, перестала любить свой народ и Родину. сидите мечтаете о хорошей жизни, но ничего для этого не делаете, а играете в игрушки на компьютере. никто вас в России не держит, пахайте и уезжайте. но вас устраивает позиция нытика.. для мужчины это вообще.. позорно.

    I have loved the Piano Concerto No 2 since forever but, listening to this "Best Of," I realize that I forgot the Second Symphony and particularly the Third Movement Adagio with its "unfolding" development. It is the epitome of romanticism.

    • @liamheigis617
      @liamheigis617 Před 9 lety

      Noe Berengena I suppose, but Rachmaninoff is not exactly a Romantic, if we are strictly speaking. He is really kind of a 20th century russian composer.

      Liam Heigis You and I need to switch our initial letter R in the word Romanticism. I need to change mine to "romanticism" and you to "Romanticism" (which was, as you pointed out, mostly a 19th century movement). I meant it in the sense of romance and incorrectly spelled it with a capital. I just changed it.

    • @rshinn61649
      @rshinn61649 Před 9 lety +9

      Liam Heigis Rachmaninoff is not a "20th century" composer in style at all - his musical feet are firmly planted in Romanticism, a wonderful "throwback" to an earlier era.

      Ronald Shinn He's a 19th century composer, lost in romantic era. He was born on the post-romanticism and the start of 20th century, it is not surprising his work still planted in Romanticism.
