The piano dominated Rachmaninoff’s creative thinking from the start. Even his four early piano pieces of 1887 reveal the extraordinary sense of kinship he felt with the instrument. However, he soon had higher ambitions in mind, emulating Chopin (and before him)Bach by composing the sequence of Op.23 Preludes in the early years of the 20th century, and following it with two sonatas which demanded the prodigious technique that almost he alone of contemporary performers could marshal. The Op 32 Preludes date from a Schumann-esque 18-day burst of creativity, but they distil Rachmaninoff’s pianistic imagination at its most diverse, completing the cycle. His compositional voice is darker and still more introspective in the sequences of Etudes-tableaux, which forsake the free and lyrical vein of his earlier music for a disciplined austerity.
A moment to relax, to withdraw from an increasingly hectic life, overfed with stimuli from work, society obligations and social networks: this music will calm down your jittery nerves, and will take you on slow waves of soothing melodies to a world of pure sound and tranquillity.

Beautiful, Thank you.

I am 90 years old. I can't imagine not having Rachmaninoff and Beethoven in whatever life there is after this one
I hope, if you are enjoing your present life, that it will be quite a while before you find out which music accompanies you in the next one, but whichever it is, I hope it is of this standard.
Beautiful
If you're attached to these composers, you'll most probably be granted the opportunity to hear their music again in this world in your next lifetime. However, I do believe that there's no limit to perfection, especially in spiritual realm. All beautiful creations spring from but a spark of God's splendor.

As Horowitz said: Brahms and Tchaikovsky wrote well for orchestra, not piano. Chopin wrote well for piano, not orchestra. Rach was a master composer for piano AND orchestra, was one of the best pianists of all time and was a master orchestra conductor. This man was a music superhero at the very least.
No puedo decir nada más. Es
Horowitz if he said that was just wrong and being simplistic. Brahms’ intermezzi for piano are a staple in the piano repertoire. I’ve played many of them. Chopin on the other hand wrote exclusively for piano except for his piano concertos which makes what Horowitz said nearly irrelevant. If Chopin tried I’m sure his musicality would have produced some interesting orchestral work but he didn’t have time. Chopin died young at 39. It’s about your focus and what is available to you. Not just your abilities.
@@michaelsims1160 you may be a better pianist than me Michael but I find Brahm's Intermezzos difficult from the viewpoint of hand position and fingering which I find awkward and unnatural many times. In contrast, I find Chopin and Rach has natural hand positions and fingering (even tho a lot of their works are difficult to play). Also, this is a more personal viewpoint but I love everything I would say that Chopin has written EXCEPT for his piano concertos which I to date do not enjoy (orchestration???).
And Prokofiev?😊
@@mariolongo7369 don’t know his music well enough. No doubt about his orchestral abilities (eg Romeo and Juliet) Piano works are clearly technically very demanding - but heart felt music, I am not so sure

Sergei Rachmaninoff is one of the kind master of the melancholic and very deep romantic melodies, genius as a composer, and piano virtuoso himself...When I hear his music I must be sure that I am not down or nostalgic because it will make me have teary eyes. What a gift to humanity great Rachmaninoff!!
Somebody referred to Rach as "six feet of Russian gloom".... I doubt he would be life and soul of a party... Mind you living in Russia would be enough to depress anybody,,,, Spine chilling music though
amen☦
Rachmaninoff's second piano concerto literally caught my soul at the time when I was being treated for the darkest depression. I didn't know his music until then, and I've been coming back to it ever since. It goes from heart to heart, from soul to soul. His wonderful music must be a gift from God!
Did you know that it was the same concerto that helped Rachmaninoff also get out of a dark depression? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piano_Concerto_No._2_(Rachmaninoff)
@@tomwalker6756 Yes, I know. What was wholesome and healing for him, he shared with his listeners. You can sense a relationship of the souls with one another. That is the real, true meaning of music! As Rachmaninoff himself defined it: music is that which goes from heart to heart...
@@anne-lisebouvier128 True. - Please let me say: This is the actual root not only of our mental problems. People no longer want to have anything to do with Christ, they reject God's truth. - It is written in the Bible how it will come, and in the present time you can feel and see it coming very clearly. It is simply fact ... Jesus Christ is our eternal soul savior, for everyone who accepts him as such. People have largely forgotten this - and believe the lies of this world instead of the truth.
I came to faith because if you value the truth, the truth of the Bible becomes obvious to you, especially in this time. All facts confirm this, but most people still don't know what is really going on.

Can't understand people listening to rap or pop when they could be uplifted by this.
How it happens ???
Appreciation of more sophisticated music requires a more developed sensitivity. Not everyone has it. But they just as often possesses gifts in areas that neither of us has. "Diffr'nt strokes fer diffr'nt folks" or, as Frank Zappa put it, "some people like cupcakes better." :)
Human race...is quickly degradate.....running to their extinción!!!😢
I am uplifted with either Rachmaninoff or the Beatles. My classical upbringing led me to understanding a flash in the pan compared to a pop band that has a true understanding of composition.

Born Russian but an American citizen we can claim him also. Blessing both countries ❤
@@Yuppie.Mike.
@@Irina-b.korovkaof course he's serious. He's correct. If Russia can claim Pushkin who was part African, the USA can, along with Russia, claim Rachmaninov: because he did truly take American citizenship.
And even though these also are American citizens, Russia could claim them because they were born there:
Irving Berlin, Isaac Asimov, and Sergei Brin.

"What is Music? How do you define it? Music is a calm moonlit night, the rustle of leaves in Summer. Music is the far off peal of bells at dusk! Music comes straight from the heart and talks only to the heart: it is Love! Music is the Sister of Poetry and her Mother is sorrow!"
Sergei Rachmaninoff
Wow! Genau so habe ich immer Rachmaninoffs Musik beschrieben. Genau so!
Did you know that Rachmaninoff himself suffered from periods of acute depression, including a 4-month period prior to writing the second Piano Concerto. When he was finally able to complete it, he dedicated his Piano Concerto # 2 to his doctor, Nicolai Dahl.
(too bad his music is almost impossible to play, especially for someone with hands as small as mine. Rachmaninoff was 6-feet, 6 inches tall and had enormous hands - it is thought that he had Marfan's syndrome which exhibits traits such as extreme height and long fingers, including double-jointedness.
Russia had such amazing artists, in all forms, from music, to ballet, to writing, to painting and architecture. Whenever i look at what is happening in the world today because of the russian war, i try to remember this. Beauty and atrocities are both part of life.
Russia is fighting fascism. Again...
Quietly, I'm listening to every note of Rachmanioff 's music. It soars with longing of a romance in my heart ❤️ A genius he was, a master of the piano.
The flute begins interweaving with the piano at 0:44 (the flute so beautifully played btw!), then at 1:01 the flute morphs seamlessly into a clarinet. The clarinet hands it back to the flute at 1:54, then at 2:02 the flute gives it back to the clarinet, but this time the melody is transferred to the piano with the clarinet doing the accompanying work. Love how Rachmaninoff did all of this!
Here we have highly concentrated loveliness!

Never knew " All by myself" had Rachmaninoff as the main tune.
Never heard of that. But what about THE world famous British film Brief Encounter, 1945, altho b/w, with Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard. So sad, so ‘right’ at the end, all set to Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 2. Absolutely heartbreaking.
I think of that every time I hear it
Was a bit disappointed not to hear the 18th variation on a theme of Paganini but apart from that , very enjoyable. I am proud to have shared a planet with Rachmaninov for three years and nine months, That's how old I was when he died.
I hope he was proud to have shared the planet with you too, even for a short period!

Adoro Rachmaninoff, me conmueve enormemente.
The first adagio presents sublime, angelic, divine inspirations, which makes us take our feet off the ground.
It’s not about technique, but only about émotion.
technique is absolutely a factor
you can't express emotion through the instrument if you don't have the technique to do so

Ovo mogu slušati ponovo i ponovo...bravo!
Rachmaninoff!
When I discovered you, I was about 16 years old.
Emotionally completely unexperienced.
But then, I discovered you. I discovered this music.
It touched my soul immediately. It evoked feelings that I had never known before.
Then I met my now soulmate girlfriend. You accompanied me.
I got my heart broken twice. You accompanied me.
Every time I play the piano for her, I play Rachmaninoff.
I love her. I love you.
Because she is the human embodiment of your music.
In all these years that I have known you and your music, I lived a more fulfilled life.
Listening to these adagios evokes this 'Rachmaninoff-feeling', this sadness, happiness, melancholy, nostalgia and longing for the past. Past memories, past people, past friends.
You make me love being a human.
I love your pieces, I love to learn them, to play them, to make and upload videos of me playing them.
Thank you for being such an incredible enrichment to my life.
You are the best. THE master of music. The best pianist, the best composer, the best conductor. I will never cease to say that.
Istina je istina.
I am also a very melancholic person, just like you were.
I love to listen to your music and to be then sad or experience this 'Rachmaninoff-feeling' again, on purpose. Because I love it.
I have dedicated, dedicate and will dedicate my life to you and your music, just as I will do with my soulmate.
Thank you, Sergei.
Dearheart..... such purity of heart and mind... Everything you wrote was with such sincerity and beauty. May I send you a hug and tell you thank you? ❤
Dearheart... Such sincere and beautiful thoughts shared with such pure emotions.... The depth of who you are shines forth
@lynnbrown9897 Thank you so much for your kind words! I really appreciate them!
You know, this comment also refers to almost the whole repertoire of Rachmaninoff, not only the adagios, e.g. the 1st movement of the 2nd Concerto or the 3rd's ossia cadenza, and so on and so on...
Every day i spend a great deal of my time making chemotherapy hats and other comfort items for other people going thru hard times. The collected adagios help me stay focused on putting love and care into every stitch.... Listening to works in full-format is a different experience. Sometimes my heart needs that, sometimes the quiet peacefulness. Both good for the soul!
@@lynnbrown9897 I wish you all the best!
Thank you. So very, very beautiful.

The theme from Piano Concerto Number One must rank as one of the most haunting pieces of music ever written.
a huge YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Philippe
cest grve docteur ? oui !et je ne veux pas me S oigner philippe a qui veuit me REPONDRE JE DIS JE t'ATTENDS
This world is full of wonderful performances like this
But
most people doesn't realize it
It's up to you whether you realize it or not
There is no such thing as the hit or miss with Rachmanoff‘s works .
All is great, splendid.
The only problem
would be the quality of the performance and sound
Rachmaninoff never miss anything.

Rach Adagios are the perfect definition of Melancholy
Adagio and andante

Agree 100%, I would just add some themes:
2nd Piano Concerto, 1st Mov., 2nd Theme (Eb Major)
2nd Concerto, 3rd Mov., Bb-Major and Db-Major themes
3rd Concerto, 1st Mov., 2nd Theme (Bb-Major)
2nd Symohony, 2nd Mov., 2nd Theme (Moderato)
And so on, and so on...
