- Join me on a walking and talking tour of Cahokia Mounds, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest pre-European city north of Mexico. Cahokia was the capital of the Mississippian culture, which flourished from 800 to 1400 CE across the central and eastern United States. Cahokia's population reached up to 20,000 people at its peak, and its influence extended far beyond its boundaries.
In this video, I will explore the site of Cahokia Mounds, located near present-day St. Louis, Missouri. I will visit the Interpretive Center, the Twin Mounds, Mound 72, the Grand Plaza, and the impressive Monks Mound, the highest earthen structure in North America. Along the way, I will learn about the history, culture, religion, and achievements of the Cahokians, who built hundreds of mounds for various purposes, such as burials, ceremonies, residences, and observatories.
Cahokia Mounds is a fascinating and mysterious place that reveals the rich and diverse heritage of the Native American civilizations that existed before the arrival of Europeans. Come and discover Cahokia, the City of the Sun, with me!
