Being the first overall pick in the NHL draft comes with very high expectations. With those expectations comes an enormous amount of pressure...Especially when you're hailed to be the next Connor McDavid or Sidney Crosby. In this video, we break down the most important obstacle for Connor Bedard early in his career.

TBH Bedard is probably the one I´m the least worried about when it comes to mentality, have you guys seen his interviews or how he plays? He is literally hungry for pressure and wants to have responsibility, kind of like Hasek used to have in his prime.

Everyone keeps saying Connor lacks size for a 1st overall pick. Though true but take a look at Patrick Kane. Patrick Kane is a 1st rd, 1st overall pick (2007), he's a lethal goal scorer with an underrated playing making ability. Has won three Stanley Cups, and doing it with a height of 5'10.

Not only this but Kane isn't even a 180 pounds today, and was only 160 as a rookie. Bedard is already 185, and at just under 5'10 his build is more comparable to young Crosby than it is to Kane. I don't think it's crazy to assume he has a rookie season better than Kane but might just fall short of Crosby's.

The thing that worries me the most about Connor Bedard joining the Blackhawks is that when Sidney Crosby was picked in 2005, the year before, the Penguins picked Evgeni Malkin. When the Oilers picked Connor McDavid in 2015, the year before, the Oilers picked Leon Draisaitil. When you have the weight of a franchise on your shoulders, it is good to have a wingman. Last year, the Blackhawks picked Kevin Korchinski, a defenseman, at the 7th spot and Frank Nazar, a center, at the 13th spot. I hope these players develop quickly to help Bedard handle the load. Similarly, a long time ago in 2007, when the Blackhawks picked Patrick Kane first overall, the year before, they had picked Jonathan Toews at the 3rd spot. There is a pattern here.

He's the same size as Brayden Point. No disrespect to Point (he's clearly a star/borderline franchise center), but Bedard's ceiling is definitely higher from a skill perspective. He'll be fine. Bedsy's got a little grease/rat in him, which should serve him well.
The only question is how he'll handle a long playoff run. Like Point, he'll be targeted relentlessly. Scott Mayfield and Shea Weber made sure he paid the price for those two rings.

From what I’ve seen, a lot of people while yes are hoping/expecting him to put up great numbers and make a big impact, also know that his rookie year is meant to acclimate him to this new environment. Later on is when we hope for him to breakout but I believe if he puts up a 30 goal 60-70 point season that would make a lot of people happy especially for a rookie year.

I dont quite undersrand where this whole "He's too small" thing comes from. Hes 5'10 and about 185lbs. At his age he's bigger than Patrick Kane, Martin St-Louis, Johnny Gaudreau, Brad Marchand, Marcel Dionne in their draft-years (to name a few). He's also exhibited more talent than them other than maybe Dionne, but that was a different era. He plays with grit and has the know-how to not let his "lack of size" hinder him. I think he'll do just fine in the NHL.

  • @ulrichsuter3548

The hype is exactly what the word means - just a hype. He has tremendous talent and skill paired with a blend of Jack Hughes and Connor McDavid. Especially Hughes has demonstrated that smaller players can overcome physical disadvantages with skill and speed. Hughes is surprisingly resilient and a tougher cooky than most anticipated.
The Blackhawks made a really smart move by bringing in Hall - he successfully mentored Hischier a few years ago. Nevertheless, he needs a much broader support crew than just Hall and at the moment they don't really look like a fast puck-moving team... I hope they prove me wrong. Best of luck to Bedard and let's hope he has a normal grounding family surrounding that keeps him on the right altitude level.

Bedard is humble because he doesn't believe in his own legend. People think he's being humble for good PR or something. I think he's genuinely humble because his hockey IQ is so insane. His game is to use everyone and everything that's going on around him to make plays. He's never going to accept the idea that hockey is a one man show because that's not how he plays. The press isn't going to be able to sell him on his own hype and that's why he deals with pressure so well. His lived experience and his success in hockey continues to reinforce the idea that this is a team game. I personally think he's going to live up to the hype because of that. Were talking about a kid that still enters roller hockey tournaments with his buddies, meanwhile he's going number one in the draft. I don't know what could keep you more humble and grounded than getting beat once in a while by some roller hockey guys that will never make it to the NHL.

I think it would be kind of harsh to put so much pressure on him to be as good as those guys because he's just a rookie. Rookies are going to make mistakes. I’d love for the media attention to die down a bit and maybe we can see his personality come out a bit. Right now he is being told what and how to do everything and it’s killed his personality. He’s the new McDavid and as a fan I hate to see that. As much as I don’t like Matthews personality, I love that he at least has one. The sport needs more Biz’s and less McJesus’ as far as personality goes.
On top of that all the comparisons to elite players, both past and present is a bit overkill this early. Assuming that he doesn’t have some career ending injury he will likely join their ranks, but let the kid breath and enjoy the moment.

Edit: I'm being lynched for ever daring to doubt the greatness of Connor Mcdavid. How dare I say such blasphmey after only THREE games. You're right, he may only be 18 years old, but he has the emotional maturity of a Buddhist monk, and the body and athleticism as a top olympic athlete. He may have hit puberty only 3 to 4 years ago, but he is a grown man now, capable of all pressure and criticism that comes his way. I am but a lowly neckbeard maple leafs fan who lives in my mothers basement here to shit on him for not getting 50 goals in his first 3 games. I am a rodent, and he is a golden god. I'm going to go light myself on fire now. Thank you for showing me the error of my ways with you jamming the downvote arrow on your computer screen with all your might and telling me how much of an idiot I am."
And 97 went on to smash all expectations and start to touch 66/99 territory.

In regards to actual impact on the NHL before they were even drafted Bedard is not even top 3 when it comes to being a sure fire generational talent. I have no doubts that he's phenomenal but this crap is just recency bias

Hockey intelligence : Connor McDavid?? LMFAO ya no, he's not close to McDavids hockey IQ or vision. Give it up already. This kid is a pure goal scorer like Matthews, thats what he is, thats all.

What will break Connor Bedard in the NHL? I'm gonna go with Ryan Reeves.

    Bedard will be a bust.

It also doesn't help that Bedard got picked up by Chicago, a very controversial franchise as of late. Many people think that the Blackhawks got off with a slap on the wrist from their drama, so they want them to fail simply out of spite.

This past draft class has been compared to the 2015 draft so, I think Leo Carlson is going to be under a TON of unnecessary to pressure to succeed despite playing in a smaller market. He has taken Ahead of Fantili(The other so-called generational talent) and Michov. So the Ducks organization has to hope they made the right choice

Even if he’s a bust in not reaching the expectations brought on him he’s still the best player in the draft. Saying you’re glad your team didn’t get him is crazy since even if he isn’t Crosby level he’s better than every other player drafted

lets just hope the coaching staff in chicago doesn't rape him and then cover it up. That's what I'd be most worried about with him going to chicago. Shit if I were his parents I would have made it clear on public TV that if Chicago does anything like they did a few years ago, there won't be a team in chicago anymore after I'm done.

Bedard is a slower less crafty Patrick Kane. And he's right handed shooting righty which means he is always shooting off his wrong leg. Out of harmony & balance. This will exposed in the NHL.
