    While on my Appalachian Trail thru-hike, I lived in a Double Rainbow for six months (I can’t stand the AT shelters; mice, snoring, filth). Except for a few zero mile days, this was my home. Room for me and to “explode” my pack next to me every night. And…it’s so light! Now, I tour by motorcycle, but once an ultra-lighter, always an ultra-lighter. This is still my home. Henry Shires, you’re my hero.

    Testing mine out in the rain tonight. Only thing I noticed in the video that wasn't shown is that when you set up the strut to the outside, you can tighten the fly clips after attaching to the o-rings on the inside so you get a little more headroom. Every inch counts for me when being 6'3".

    This tent looks so awesome. Lightweight. A full rectangular tent floor for two full sleeping pads, lightweight, long enough for tall guys. Being “the budget sportsman” the price is just a little hard to swallow. It’s a long way from the $25 Ozark Trail tent I’m using now.

      Henry’s shelters are pricey; that said, I bought a Stratospire 2 a few years back after my Eureka sprung a few too many leaks. I would never look back. The design and build quality are superb. After all, he has been getting after the business of shelters for 50 years.

      Sounds good in theory but Dyneema does not handle abrasion well and putting the fly over the top of a structure where there is inevitable contact and movement against the structure is asking for trouble.

      @VandrefalkTV Před 2 lety

      @@tarptent Did not know you guys (or gals?) replied, sorry! But that's interesting. Hmm. And there's no way to make the outer dcf fly larger and the inner tent more taut to try prevent abrasion? Or would it require too much of a redesign?

    • @tarptent
      @tarptent  Před 2 lety +3

      @@VandrefalkTV ANY movement of Dyneema against a hard structure will result in abrasion and early demise of Dyneema. It's just not a good idea. DCF has upsides but. like all fabric, downsides as well.

    • @VandrefalkTV
      @VandrefalkTV Před 2 lety

      @@tarptent By "on top of a structure" do you mean having the inner tent set up with poles, and then a fly over it? What if the inner is 'hanging' with toggle points like most DW tents here in Europe, and the pole slides like it normally would, inside the outer fly? Or is that also too much abrasion as well, having the pole slide in and out of a dyneema fly over time? Maybe if the pole sleeve was lined with something?

    • @tarptent
      @tarptent  Před 2 lety +2

      @@VandrefalkTV The DR DW design is such that the interior can be set up by itself because the pole goes through an arch sleeve on the interior. The fly goes over the top and can clip/tie to it so that it all can go up as one piece if you want. It would certainly be possible to do a double wall version of the Double Rainbow (with exterior pole sleeve) so that the Dyneema never touches anything but then it's a fly first setup and you give up the features of the DR DW.

    I set mine up for the first time yesterday and noticed that you can use the cinches on the inside of the fly to "tighten" it down to the mesh interior using the loops shown in the video (where you show how the fly can be opened up). Is that intended?

    • @tarptent
      @tarptent  Před 2 lety +4

      Yes, intended and best performance esp. if you generally intend to use it with fly always or mostly on and in windy weather.

    Be advised the 2024 models have some different features than what is shown in video. No cup for trekking pole handle, and there are velcro strips which attach the inside to the fly . If you use these it makes inserting ridge pole difficult. The one in video does not have them. Compare product page pics to the setup video .

    • @twhis9843
      @twhis9843 Před 3 měsíci

      I found I have to leave the end fly attachments undone to insert the ridge pole with the fly attached. Also to Velcro attachments on the other fly to tent attachments have to be very loose. Eventually, I stopped trying to use it with fly attached because it was too much trouble. That was a disappointment. The length of the sleeve and ridge pole causes the pole to hang up inside. When taking down the tent with the fly attached the ridge pole sections separate.
      But the tent is very light weight. So, the short comings might be forgiven. We are using it right now in British Columbia, very rainy. I’ll write you back at the end of the trip in a week and give you more impressions

    • @rvator7291
      @rvator7291 Před 3 měsíci

      I have a feeling it will be a short lived feature. Should have just stuck to clips like what were on my Moment DW. They play it down but Its a screw up as far as I'm concerned.

      @@rvator7291After 4 days using the Rainbow DW, I have to agree you. In perfect flat conditions, like a prepared tent pad in a state park, it was a manageable tent. But when we went into backcountry conditions with uneven ground and small sites, it was a difficult tent. The mesh is very close to the fly so even a small contact the mesh would get us wet from condensation.
      But all equipment takes some practice. We have been modifying things like this for a long time and will hopefully figure a way to make it work. I do like the weight and pack ability. So the jury is still out, as they say. But your comments are accurate. I’m glad I’m not the only one who noticed these design details.

    • @rvator7291
      @rvator7291 Před 3 měsíci

      I would love to see Henry do a set up video of current design with velcro attached.No chance getting pole thru. If you have to leave all or most of them un attached it is just an other step to fool with them. If I had realized this before seam sealing I would have returned it. This is my 4th tarp tent and unfortunately not 100% thrilled with this one.

    • @twhis9843
      @twhis9843 Před 3 měsíci

      @@rvator7291 Again, I have to agree with you. This is our first Tarp Tent so I am reluctantly disappointed. I also thoroughly seam sealed it and reinforced all the stress points. After the experience of this last week, in hindsight I would have returned it. Admittedly the conditions were difficult in terms of low temperatures, high humidity. Initially my wife and I were using the Rainbow and our son was using another 2 person tent as a single. But the Rainbow was a condensation machine with 2 people in it so we switched and our son used it as a single. His first reaction was “Oh, this is a single tent.” The floor is large but the manner in which the walls taper to the apex cross bar limits the living space. That is ok in a dry environment. Doesn’t work in rainy colder weather. With the fly pre-attached, the sleeve is a focal line for moisture to accumulate and drip. The cross bar on the inside of the fly made this even worse.
      So there you go. As a bike packing tent in summer this will be ok. On the bike we usually have wider selection of sites than backpacking. As a true backpacking tent where more versatility is needed, the Rainbow didn’t do well this past week in British Columbia.
