Mariah Carey’s Oh Holy Night rendition is phenomenal. Love that she included so many classic carols in her Christmas albums.
The beautiful harmonies of Lucy and Martha Thomas are perfect for a song whose lyrics include "Oh hear the angel voices". If there are singers who sound like a choir of angels it would be Lucy and Martha Thomas. They sing this beloved hymn with the reverence and majesty which it deserves. This is my favorite rendition of this song.
Thanks Don-Juan!
@@wilburfinnigan2142Mariah is vocally more talented than them.
For me Maria sings every song the same way irrespective of the message or lyrics Lucy and Martha tailor the way they sing to suit the subject matter I prefer the latter.
Mariah is one of the most talented singers ever. She is known for power and control of her instrument as well as her ability to build according to the music. No one compares to her rendition and I assume that most of you don’t like this version because of it being heavily soulful and certain individuals will never understand the complexity of soul music.
@Raven__n I personally love it. I stumbled on it years ago and it hit me in a way I can’t explain
I love true gospel and Mariah sings it that way
Lucy and Martha are amazing singers as well and harmonize amazingly
But they are two completely different presentations of the same song
The issue for some of the commentators on here is that I’m presenting this as an either/or scenario
On the contrary, it’s possible that you can like both presentations but still have a preference
I think you are a kindred spirit
Great Singer with The Angels !
@@dnwp7362hihi Thank you for watching!!
GOD has created so many heavenly voices of peoples to give him honour and praise..
This was wonderful worship to listen. Thanks, to those wonderful and unique angels😇😇😇
Mariah Carey owns this song. Her version became the standard. And that's that on that.
Okay, I get it. Your an obvious Mariah fan and that's great but sometime you have to be realistic. I would really like to hear Mariah sing a song with a lot less vocal gymnastics., My favourite song of Mariah's, but not a Christmas song is "Hero" a really nice rendition. I just feel (in my opinion )that this particular song "Oh Holy Night" requires a little more finesse which the Thomas sisters deliver and their harmonies are heaven sent and unmatched.
lol oh holy nigh is not just a traditional carol it’s gospel !!! So say you prefer those two kids but they are not even close
Mariah also had a whole choir behind her, didnt care for all the screaming, Martha n Lucy kept it elegant, angelic and true!
I understand it’s just in the way she presents it.
Different presentations of the same tune!
She did it live in 2010 for an ABC Christmas Special she did.
"All hail and bow to Mariah Carey, The Queen of Divas, Protector of the vocal skills from the realm, Archiduchess of Vocal range/registers, Empress of agility, The unmatched, The Mellisma mother, The Goddess of Songwriting and producing, The one often imitated, but never duplicated, The embodiment of pure success",. My simpleton ears are not worthy of your talent but a simple sung phrase will be enough to heal me for all eternity.
Preach
Mariah made the song her own. Inspired dozens of other singers to recreate her rendition.
Mariah Carey's alto is phenomenal
Agreed!!
I loved the first part of Mariah ‘s version then not so much after that, I did like the jazzier music of Mariah’s version.
I think Lucy and Martha were phenomenal ! That it was graceful, beautiful harmonies and pitch perfect without all the hullabaloo. It was just them singing pure and angelic!
In Mariah Carey there very good singer I also notice the voice sounds like screatch not too favour. The Thomas sister's I say there voices are fantastic beatiful tone quality. This song bring's back the memories of when Christ was born here on Earth just been wonderful song.
Please stop speaking on music if you’re unaware of the intricacies of the voice. This is a very technical rendition and if you like music without character and vocal complexity, then say that.
Screech?? Incredible generation so now basic has become wonderful to you nothing that incredible on the cover of those sisters,I’ve heard so much better
Merry Christmas Everyone!!!!! Brother you made a good choice to match mine. Different but both were great. This will start the season off alright. Don't eat too much today my fellow food lover. Thank you as always.🤠
Happy Thanksgiving brother!!
They were both fantastic, however those 2 girls were just a tiny bit more fantasticer. New word of the day. Take care.
🙏🙏🙏
Mariah’s skill was way beyond theirs lol. I understand if u prefer their version, however u can’t deny Mariah has more skill and talent, she’s literally considered top 3 best vocalists of all time by most, along with Whitney Houston and Celine Dion
@@BaddieRiahthe hate is unreal lol. Mariah always gets hated on it’s crazy lol.
@@BaddieRiahIt all comes down to one's own opinion. However heres a Fact not an opinion. Lucy has not been shy in covering songs of all the female singers you've mentioned here and done so absolutely brilliantly. Her ability to perform any genre is beyond amazing, something thes😮e "Greatest Singers" may struggle with. An example: from a smokey old jazz number like At Last to the pure perfection Pie Jesu. This is a true illustration of talent and at such a young age.
@@pedromancenithe3rd at last isn’t much of a hard song tho… lmao. Anyways, Mariah has STILL shown to be able to do more than anyone else in whistle register. We were talking abt whistle register SPECIFICALLY, not the rest of the voice, so stick to the topic pls. However if u DO wanna Segway into other parts of the voice or singing abilities in general just lmk.
Great comparison. When Mariah starting singing so quietly and with such restraint, I had the sense of a herd of thoroughbreds being held back before being released - she has such great energy, charisma. Her ability is clearly phenomenal but I have to say I don't think this arrangement did her any favours - it's far too intricate and showy for what the song is about. On the other hand, the Thomas sisters struck the right balance of controlled, clean singing with beautiful colouring and expression, and the harmonies are divine in tune with the meaning of the song. I hope you let your wife in 🙂. Take care
Thank you, Richard, The Mariah is one of my favorite renditions of this song. But I loved the Thomas sisters as well!!
@@wilburfinnigan2142not according to the stats and most ppl. Everyone labels Mariah’s version the best
@@BaddieRiah I don't! 😄 I'd didn't even like it.
@@ChrisScott0 lol clearly everyone is a GENERALIZATION of the majority of the population😂. And u can’t even say I’m wrong either because her version of O Holy Night gets THE most covers and streams each year
@@BaddieRiah You are wrong! 😆 Many people consider contemporary art to be the best. To me a pile of shit is a pile of shit, and I don’t care how many others hold their nose. 💩 I don’t follow Lemmings off a cliff, and the majority of the population are led and brainwashed. I make up my own mind, and I look for and find my own music good otherwise like the news you’ll be spoon-fed crap.
Mariah Carey has talent and a great voice, and her style is good for those that like that. I don’t. Good singers don’t need to wave hands frantically and pull silly faces and shake to try to convince they can sing, and a song should be listened without the need for subtitles and this version of Carey’s doesn’t portray the serenity of the song. Plus Carey struggles with some vocals in this, and I just didn't like it. However I do have 3 of Carey’s song in my Christmas playlist and I do like ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ so I do give her credit when deserved. But here the Thomas were far better with this.
😮😮😮
Keep comparing Lucy to the best and greatest and Lucy will continue to destroy them all. I’m the Lucy supporter but I’ll still be fair, but if Mariah Carey’s version is the best then I can confidently say Lucy and Martha’s is better. In my opinion I’d imagine there are many better than Mariah Carey’s version and I just didn’t rate it, in fact I didn’t even enjoy it, and it did need the subtitles. Sorry Jeff Mariah Carey did nothing for me. I like her big budget song ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’, and her other Christmas songs ‘Miss You Most’, and ‘Oh Santa!’ were ok. But here kick arse 12 year old Martha Thomas on a shoe string budget is better.
I have all 3 Mariah Carey songs I just mentioned in my Christmas playlist so I do give her credit, but I have this Lucy & Martha Thomas song ‘O Holy Night’ in the same playlist. I select and add the most traditional and best versions of every song with 3 from Mariah Carey, so it’s an honest opinion. I also felt the Thomas’s version was better, better vocals, better harmony, more traditional, more divine, and relayed the story and real feel of Christmas.
@@Abigail-wj2mg Close with my name Abigail. 😀 Yes I saw and commented on it. Haha 🙂 I voted for and gave that to Morissette Amon because on 'Never Enough' Morissette was the best. Morissette version is the best of that I’ve seen so far. But don’t forget Lucy was only 13 years old!!! I like Morissette Amon she is a very good singer and probably has the best stage presence over anyone. Morissette is over flowing with self-confidence and she is a much better acting performer than Lucy. Morissette also has a more powerful belt. However overall I’d say Lucy has a better and nicer voice, and singing isn’t all about belting or pulling faces. But I like both Lucy and Morissette. Of course Lucy isn’t always the best or has the best song version, but overall Lucy is superb. Plus when I said the best and greatest, I was meaning Mariah Carey, Barbra Streisand, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Faith Hill, Etta James, Bette Midler, etc, etc.
you're delusional
I get it now you are trolling how pathetic these toddlers will never be close to Mariah
Like your comparison reaction vidios. Two different vibes going on. Don't think Lucy will ever be a Cary type of singer. Cary always good, but was verging on slight screaming. Lucy and Martha, technically perfect as always. When they get a bit older and learn also to let go a bit, then that could be amazing.
Thanks J. I really liked both and as I commented on another comment I didn't get screaming from Mariah, but maybe? Anyway, glad you enjoyed this.
@@wilburfinnigan2142lol ur clearly a MASSIVE hater because ur under every comment just shitting on Mariah. And clearly u don’t know ur technical terms because nothing she did here was screaming. If she screamed then she would have no control over her vocal gymnastics here, and CLEARLY, even U admitted she did lots of vocal gymnastics, so clearly she had control over her belts and whistle notes.
a scream is different from a belt. The key of the two covers are also different.
@@wilburfinnigan2142scream? Are you guys serious? Y'all are so annoying
@@codywalsh2075so damn annoying lol
Dear Sir Jeff, I requested a Mariah Carey and then Morissette (Live at Starmall) "Oh Holy Night" months ago which I think would have been a better comparison because of Morissette's powerful vocals and a beautiful whistle note at the end of the song. Unfortunately for me, Jeff Kerr's
suggestion was the one featured. Thanks, anyway, and stay safe.
Sorry about that Cristy I didn’t intentionally leave you out
I’ll find a way to get it in
@@JeffHoffman-tr8fr Much obliged !!
@@cristy4742absolutely !
Morissette's got to be better than Mariah Carey's version here.
@ChrisScott0 Morisette please , each time she covers Mariah she sounds like she is about to die lol.
There's one other version of O Holy night you should listen to and that's by a choral group called Libera check them out on this you won't be disappointed.
Someone thinking those 2 girls are even worthy to be compared to Mariah’s version is either tone deaf or trolling.Mariah used gospel arrangements and her belts are immaculate here , that resonance control , register switches , the gospel quality and soul she brought.Thaie girls sounded like Disney princesses nothing spiritual or soulful on that and technical skills they are toddlers compared to Mariah.
@@GabirouTaejin-ku4ov not comparing them merely like to see how others interpret the song.
Thanks for watching.
❤🔥Lucy & Martha ❤🔥 👏👏
Nothing against Mariah and her great voice, but in my opinion she overdoes it too much with all the runs. I would have liked it much better if she had kept the song a bit simpler.
Interesting totally different take on the song. Sorry but I just don´t like Mariah Carey´s voice I never have , why the need to scream is beyond me. I do love Lucy´s voice and with Martha together they make a beautiful rendition of this song.
Thanks, Colin. Interestingly to me others spoke of her screaming I didn't feel that at all. She has great range and ability the only thing i could chalk it up to is her high falsetto, But I'm glad you liked the Thomas sister's version!
@@wilburfinnigan2142she doesn’t scream lol. None of the things she did in this song could be considered a “scream”. If ur talking abt that whistle like high note, that’s called a WHISTLE note, totally different technique, placement, and style. And if ur talking abt her upper belts, honey that’s called BELTING. Just abt Every vocalist does it, Whitney, Aretha, Patti, Celine, etc. even singers like Adele
@@BaddieRiahlook at the comments lmao, a bunch of old yt people hating on Mariah 💀
@@codywalsh2075you’re right, but I guess they are rarely if ever exposed to actual vocalists and Instead are used to hearing regular singers with barely any actual vocal agility. So they don’t understand how she is using her vocal mastery to show the emotion of every lyrics.
You are so cursed to have heard and learnt to apprrciate the mediocrity. Mariah's rendition is so soulful and the stylistic choice she uses really highlight her interpretation.
Hi Jeff, sorry but I have never been a fan of Mariah. I hate the vocal gymnastics she employs and I think her attempt at this great hymn was awful. Lucy and Martha, however, performed it as it should be. They brought tears to my eyes. BTW, Johnathon Antoine does a great version. Check him out if you get the chance. Keep up the good work Jeff.
Then ur sad asf. 90% of the population have named Mariah’s version of this song the best, and CLEARLY it holds up, even with other vocalists, most of them have done a rendition to HER version lol
I agree 100% Ken. Christmas carols, and the National Anthem don't need messing with. They are traditional for a reason. It's called RESPECT.
@@HozelRocket exactly they’re traditional. And Mariah made her own TRADITIONAL rendition to them and now they’re more popular with HER version🤣. Her rendition of O Holy Night is the most mainstreamed and popular.
@@BaddieRiah NOTHING traditional about Mariah's. Sounds like someone is strangling a cat !!
This version is inspired by the music Mariah grew up listening to. This arrangement perfectly captures how amazing her vocal ability is and how complex her voice is. I notice that throughout the comments, it is a ton of traditionalists who grew up listening to flavorless music and are closed off to the idea that there is more to music than simple and plain. Mariah has always been inspired by soul music and southern Baptist gospel. It’s all in her music and you can hear the inspiration in this rendition that has become the norm. It’s extremely difficult to understand why there’s an entire demographic out there that refuses to understand that there are people out there who can actually sing and provide artistry but they listen to plain music with singers without an ounce of range.
