This is actually popular festival in Basque border cities Irún and Fuenterrabia (Irun and Hondarribi in Basque) to commemorate the 1522 siege of San Marcial by the French and the 1638 siege of Hondarribia respectively. These festivals include the arms conmemoration and in the case of Hondarribia, they march towards the Ermita de Santa Guadalupe, who supposedly saved the Spanish Army from defeat in this siege. It should be remembered that among the prominent Basque intelligentsia of the first half of the last century, authors such as Ramiro de Maeztu, Rafael Sánchez Mazas, Rafael Aizpurúa Asquea or Ramón de Basterra contributed, among many others (Galician and Catalan intellectuals as well) to endow the General Franco's regime of much of its ideological framework. Some of the main international propagandists of the Franco regime were also Basque citizens: Fermín Yzurdiaga or Joaquín Arrarás.
Iñaki Anasagasto, senator of the Basque Nationalist Party (enemies of Spanish patriotism and staunch detractors of Francoism), in an article published a few years ago, admitted that the presence of people of Basque origin in the Francoist institutional apparatus was prominent. He said: "The legislature was practically a closed preserve. Esteban Bilbao held the presidency of the Francoist courts for no less than ... 22 years!" Franco used to say that his Bilbao successor in the Francoist courts should not be Basque because the Basques had already had a disproportionate representation in the Cortes for two decades.
It was a decree signed by Franco himself that introduced regional languages in general education, in the context of the LGE of the year 1970. Thus, it is stated in said decree: "The General Education law, when defining the areas of activity for Preschool Education, in its article 14, and, for General Basic Education, in its article 17, it includes in them the cultivation, where appropriate, of the native language as a means to achieve an effective incorporation of regional peculiarities to the heritage The introduction of native languages in Preschool and General Basic Education is justified, taking into account, on the one hand, the need to promote the school integration of students who have received a language other than the national one as their mother tongue, and on the other, to the undoubted interest that its cultivation has from the first educational levels as a means to make possible the access of the student to the cultural manifestations of such languages ".
The first ikastolas (An ikastola is a type of cooperative educational center that uses Basque as a vehicular language, forming part of the Basque education system in the Basque Country) were created during the Franco regime, in 1965, and under the protection of the Catholic Church . Even in 1969 the Diocesan Federation of Ikastolas was founded. From 596 students in 1965 it went to 26,936 in 1975 (year of Franco's death), according to the Eusko ikaskuntza website. I have also discovered that the first Basque Literary and Record Fair in Durango was held in 1965, ten years before Franco's death. Even Euskaltzaindia (Royal Academy of the Basque Language) remained open and functioning during the Franco regime.

Basque was never banned in Francoist Spain, he fought against Basque nationalism and Basque nationalists writers, that's different than banning an entire language. That "Franco banned Basque language" is a Myth.

The basque academy was created under Franco. Wasnt illegal.
During the francoist regime many other people from different parts of Spain came to the Basque Country because they didn't have anything to bring to their mouth to eat. My mother is a daughter of those immigrants, my whole city was filled with people who didn't speak basque. I remember once my mother said that they punished a girl who didn't know Spanish for speaking Basque, and this was still in the 70's. That kind of prohibition depended on the teacher you had more than in the law itself.

La versión original de Oriamendi estaba escrita en vasco, y durante las guerras carlistas se cantaba en vasco la mayoría de las veces. Además que en sus versos si que aparece mencionado el país vasco además de en españa.
