AJ don't play. We get the most stunning, amazing performance of a 9 yr old of this Jazz standard ever created. I believe it is going to go down in Jazz & Music history as the best ever for this age and in my opinion the best rendition of this song ever created Screamin Jay included. It will be revisited for Decades and will remain relevant for Generations to come. Anyone who discovers this performance for the first time today or a 100 years from today are going to be as amazed and astounded as everybody has been to this point.
Think of the children who will be inspired by this one performance in the decades to come. This is an Iconic performance and will always be Iconic. Angelina has on her own from early on at 6 or 7 yrs old reintroduced what I believe will be a whole new Jazz Era and redefined by this young phenom and prodigy. That is astounding! And she is just 16 years old... That is unfathomable. She's 9 here. This is her arrangement of a mid 1950s original by Screamin Jay Hawkins. She took his more theatrical piece and made a serious jazz song from it. She has been singing jazz since she was 3 and learned it from Billie Holiday. That is her foundational level of skills. She pushed her mom into letting her compete in Norway's Got Talent when she was 7 and won singing jazz and blues in her third language, English. She's 17 tomorrow. I don't know if you are familiar with Screamin' Jay Hawkins' original recording of this, and if you're NOT, then you just have to watch it. Like for real for real. Then you will understand SO much more about what Angelina actually did here, that would otherwise pass under the radar. I will give you the link, and I really suggest you listen to it, and then listen to Angelina right after. It is just completely mind blowing.

At the age of 7 she auditioned for Norways got talent (her native home and tongue) where she performed “Gloomy Sunday” by Billie Holiday. The judge’s comments to each other were “it sounds like she was drink whisky from when she was born”.

Can you imagine being a musician and being told you will be working with a new artist doing their version of a 1956 song, and when you get to the studio all you see is this 9 year old girl. At least one or two had to be thinking "Oh this is going to be a long day". At the end of that day, the band members were affectionately referring to Angelina as "The Boss" because she knew exactly what she wanted and how she wanted it done. The Bass player gives a small smile/smirk at the 00:25 mark, which to me seems to be saying "You have no idea what you're about to hear". Love your Angelina reactions and I look forward to many more!

Good call regarding her age. By the time she recorded this, she had been invited by TV stations and charities in several continents to travel from her home in Norway to sing what was a mainly jazz repertoire. When she sang 'Fly Me to the Moon' on American TV in 2014, Quincy Jones, who arranged the seminal Frank Sinatra hit version, was impressed enough to track her progress, which had included her opening for Norah Jones in South Korea, and have her travel to London in 2018 to open with it at an 85th birthday concert in his honour. He described her at the time as the most talented young singer he had heard since Michael Jackson. She was 12. A year later, she accepted an invitation to appear on America's Got Talent: The Champions, which, when it was broadcast in January 2020, propelled an album she recorded at age 11 to climb to #1 on the iTunes Jazz Album Chart, briefly knocking jazz legend Miles Davis from top spot. According to her uncle, who manages her career, one of the stipulations for her agreeing to appear on AGT was that she should not be bound by any contractual obligations beyond the contest's duration. Perhaps as a result, she confounded the universally favourable opinion polls by finishing AGT outside the top 5, which many attribute to her team's intransigence, especially since the general public were excluded from deciding the final placings.
Up until 2020, she and her family had rejected multiple lucrative offers, including one from Disney, to go professional, insisting on her finishing her formal education. In 2020, 14-year-old Angelina was signed by Republic Records on the proviso that they limit her exposure so she could continue to have a relatively normal school life, albeit in a new country. Last summer, she performed live for the first time since The Pandemic during a brief tour back in her native Norway. Now that she is on the verge of turning 17, Republic have promised an album later this year.
But back to Angelina the child. You evidently haven't read about why Angelina performs barefoot. The story goes back to when she was in the Middle East and encountered a little homeless girl barely older than she was trying to make money by offering to weigh passers-by on an old set of bathroom scales. Angelina. who was 6 at the time, was curious enough to strike up a conversation with the girl, who turned out to be an orphan with siblings to feed. When Angelina stepped on the scales. the girl complimented Angelina on the green ankle boots she took off to do so. Angelina, noticing the girl's shoeless feet were dirty and scarred, promptly offered them to the girl who, after some back and forth (and presumably a nod of approval to Angelina' from her mother standing nearby), humbly accepted the gift. Next, the conversation turned to their hopes and dreams for the future. The girl expressed that she would have loved to become a doctor but doubted it would ever be possible under her current circumstances. Angelina's ambition was to "sing for the whole world" to enjoy. The girl promised to pray every day for Angelina, who encouraged the girl to never give up on her dream and there and then decided never to wear shoes while performing for the public until every child had shoes of their own. Clearly there was no doubt in her mind even at six that fame would afford her a platform for her activism. A year or so later, Angelina was on national TV winning Norway's Got Talent while singing barefoot and reportedly gave away most of her prize money to children's and environmental causes! She has remained true to her commitment ever since and the directors of her music videos know enough to feature her bare feet even though she has rarely referred explicitly to the statement she is making, electing instead to rely on the curiosity of observers and reactors such as yourself to help disseminate the message.
At 9 years old, Angelina wrote 'Mellom to hjerter', a book based on her chance encounter with the shoeless girl with the English title: 'Between Two Hearts', making her the youngest published author in Norway's history. During a TV talk show, the host casually asked where the incident had taken place to which Angelina gave the frankly disarming reply for one so young: "It could have been anywhere."
Even if she stopped right there and never sang another note, that list of accolades and achievements is more than many musicians achieve in decades.

Why does Angelina sing barefoot? The answer may bring a tear to your eye.
When she was 6 years old, she was in the Middle East with her mom and grandmother and they came across a young orphan girl with no shoes and scarred feet. Angelina gave the girl her own shoes and has forever performed barefoot as a reminder of all those less fortunate. At age 9 she wrote a book about this experience, Between two Hearts, becoming the youngest ever published author in Norway. She also has helped raise millions for children's charities. She is a special individual, and one you cannot follow without developing an emotional bond.

Thank you for discovering Angelina. She is well worth every microsecond you spend on her. I have watched and listened to her in awe since she released her first video on CZcams, and what has been evident to me from the start is that she sings with total conviction, despite the fact that she is far too young to have experienced the events suggested in the lyrics of the song she has chosen to sing. But it is not only that, for strange as it may seem is the even more remarkable fact that she con convey the appropriate emotions within those lyrics to her listener.
Angelina was 9 years and 2 months old when she performed this song. It is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, who wrote and performed the song in 1956 (50 years before Angelina was born). She based her arrangement on his original performance, although she discarded all the theatrics and allowed her voice and body language to tell the story. The song has been covered by many singers over the years, but to my knowledge, Angelina is the only one who has sung in the same style as the original.
There are many things I found particularly worthy of note in this video. Some I recognised immediately and those I missed were brought to my attention by the more observant Angelina fans (her Angels) and I thank them for letting me know what I had missed.
(a) Angelina finishing writing last minute changes she wanted and handing them to the Music Director, who smiled.
(b) A brief glimpse of Mery Zamani, Angelina's maternal grandmother, a well known and respected Iranian Artist and poet who was also a child prodigy. She was the person who recognised Angelina's talent at an early age and exposed her to all the old time jazz singers.
(c) The candle with an image of Screamin' Jay Hawkins on it.
(d) The smile on the face of the Bass player.
(e) How she rose on to her toes on the last occasion she sang "...because you're mine"
(f) The fact she occasionally refers to her written notes on the music stand. Possibly to remind herself of the last minute changes she wanted.
(g) Her unwavering passion throughout the performance. Evidenced by her facial expressions and the way she uses her hands and body to emphasise the direction of the song.
(h) The way she takes a breath just before she starts the last phrase (I don't care.....) and that breath lasts the whole of that sustained note. A child of that age should not have the ability to hold a note for that length of time.
(i) At the end, when she sings I Doooont Caaaaare, she employs TWO separate and distinct vibratos to the word care, a wide one to start the word and a tighter one to close the word
(j) The instant transformation from "performance" mode to that of a pensive child, possibly wondering whether she could have done better. I comment on the "pensive" child because Angelina has an incredible work ethic and seeks to perform every song in a way she considers will bring out all the emotions within the lyrics and melody.
Angelina has been referred to as the "Queen of Jazz", "The Barefoot Princess", "The girl with a thousand voices". All of them are true, but I prefer the nickname I gave her after listening to about six of her performances. For me, she is "The Chameleon of Song", for as a chameleon is able to change its colour to match its surroundings, so Angelina is able to change the "colour" of her voice to accurately match the needs of the song to reveal the emotions within the lyrics and melody. Even more remarkable is her innate ability to communicate those same emotions to her listeners.

I like to imagine all the Jazz greats sitting around a campfire with AJ right there...they chat about music, styles, and techniques, and swap stories. Then, it's time for AJ to sing, and they collectively inhabit her body, and she comes down and unleashes the perfect version of a perfect song.
Remember her first love was always jazz with a bit of blues. I believe she was 8 when she sang this song. Notice how she's directing the band with head and hand movements.

You asked about her vocal training. She is self-taught to a large extend. However she did go to a music school and learned to play piano and had some vocal training. The extend to which is not fully clear. Her family was keen not to have her unique talent be directed. Her vocal training was possibly aimed at teaching her to not hurt her voice and perhaps at reaching certain specific goals.

I must admit I thought yes you knew she was good but does uour beautiful daughter and uou didn't really realise till just now that the genies out of the lamp. Jordan attended the Oslo Waldorf School and participated in the , where she received vocal training and piano lessons. In addition to singing and playing the piano, she plays violin, guitar and flute, and also paints.
But other than the basics she did not have specific vocal training. She absorbed this all herself immersing herself in Jazz on U-Tube from the age of 3 yrs old. Her family recognized the uniqueness of her voice and abilities and did not want to mess with it. This is all Angelina. She has chosen everything she does and has had a part if not total control of the arrangements from this same age.
Prodigy? Yes there is video of her at 18 months old sing a couple of lines of 'I Will Always Love You' by Whitney Houston into a toy mic. ♥👣👸🏻🎷
She is to put out her first full record this year. Her parents are keeping her relatively low key while a child .. she does festivals and specials but they want her to have a childhood. Her bare feet. Her grandmother is Iranian (and also a prodigy in art). When Angelina was I think 6 she was in Iran I believe for a visit and she met a girl perhaps a year older than she who was making money with some scales weighing people for money. She had no shoes. Angelina talked to her .. and gave the girl her shoes. She now sings publicly barefoot .. saying that she will no perform with shoes until all children have shoes to wear. (correction .. as Mr. Olson states below, she sings barefoot to remember the girl)

You are very perceptive Britt! Yes, 90% or more is all natural talent. By age 5 she was searching the net for anything jazz and she fell in love with Billie Holiday,Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, Dinah Washington, Ella Fitzgerald and I have seen these videos where she has made those statements. She would listen for hours. Her vocal coaches at a very young age said they had done all they could and didn't want to teach her and possibly ruin what came naturally. Angelina is obviously a child prodigy who loves music, esp. jazz that her grandma Mery Zamani got her interest in playing it all the time, even while she was in the womb. You will see Angelina and Mery together in many videos. From what I gather Angelina has been spending hours every single day from pre-school til now honing her craft. Even at her concerts this past summer she promised to keep working hard and to get better and better. Very nice reaction. Yes, she is 9..... she is already very experienced working in a studio with adult musicians... this was her song choice and her arrangement: "the people who put this together" pretty much = Angelina herself ... you might have noticed her giving notes to the conductor - of course she is working with others who would have provided input, but this is very much HER creation.... she is and it seems always has been The Boss !

Thanks for another great reaction to another incredible performance by Angelina (which she also arranged) - at age 9. You wondered out loud about how she might sound when she's older. A couple of suggestions: Bohemian Rhapsody at age 13 (on AGT) & Suspicious Minds (last year at age 16). Not only does she have amazing vocals in each, but she also completely reinterprets these well known songs to make them her own. (Btw - Angelina Jordan turns 17 tomorrow: 1/10/2023. :)

This girl is empeccable at everything she does, i’ve never seen such a performer ever, especially at that young of an age. Actually….scrap that, doesn’t matter the age, if she did this at 30 years old i’d still be impressed. Prodigy is an understatement.
Great reaction. Everyone feels the same way in the sense how is that voice coming from such a little girl. It's as if some of the great singers are reincarnated in her body. You are going to be blown away by many of her other remakes and she's done so many and now making some of her own. She makes the song her own and in many cases I think it's better than the original, and she sounds different in so many of the songs as if she's a magician who can manipulate her voice. A true and rare talent and I can't wait to see her develop more and where it takes her in the world of music.

Her grandmother, Mery Zamani, a child prodigy herself, recognized Angelina's genius and fed her a steady diet of classic jazz... all the greats you mentioned and then some. She won Norway's Got Talent at the ripe old age of 7. When she was 9, she became the youngest published author in the history of Norway. Welcome to the Angelina rabbit hole. It's a wild ride.
Seasoned vet, yep ... singing from 18 months, in studio age 6, won Norway's Got Talent age 8 (started competition age 7), her she is age 9 (good eye) singing her arrangement of Screamin' Jay Hawkins' shock rock hit song. But she changes the (alcohol induced) theatrics of Jay's medicine man imitation into the raw emotions of a scorned women. She maintains the shock but brings the song back into Jay's original intent of this being a love song. Not one of the greats that has sung this before managed to do all that with this song. She is on a par with Mozart and Picasso in her artistic interpretation and raw talent.
Just in case you haven't seen it yet, Angelina always performs barefoot. She met a young homeless girl with no shoes, and gave her the shoes off her own feet. After that, she vowed to always perform barefoot.
