I grew-up during the thrash-era in the mid-late-80s. So many good bands and songs to hear from that time -
    Whiplash - Stage Dive
    Death Angel - Thrashers
DRI (Dirty Rotten Imbeciles) - Five Year Plan
    The Accused - (any song)
The above will get you started.

Fun fact: Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz once sampled this song with their tune 'Stop Fuckin' Wit Me'. I remember being at college in the early-mid 2000s and hearing someone in my class put it on and thinking "Hey, I recognise that riff".

Ice-T and his band Body Count does a cover of this song. But it's call Reign In Blood. It pretty damn good. You should do a comparison to them. Ice-T's version bleeds into the Slayer song Postmortem at the end. On the Slayer album, Postmortem plays right before Raining Blood.

When I was in high school, my school was filled with metal heads ('bangers' short for headbangers in our terms), and Slayer was top shelf. This was part of the soundtrack to my high school years, lol.
Fun fact: At an assembly in the gym, don't recall what it was for, but there were technical difficulties and the mic cut out for whoever was speaking. They couldn't figure it out and in the interim, someone starting singing Slayer's Angel of Death. Four lines in the REST of the student body assembled in the gym started singing along. Knew every word. Didn't stop until the end of the song. It was the most school unity I'd ever seen.
My favorite Slayer tune? Black Magic. That intro and it just doesn't relent once it gets it's teeth into you.

Slayer are true legends of thrash. From what I remember they formed in 1981 which was the same year Metallica formed and Metallica left L.A., mainly because they wanted to add killer bass player Cliff Burton who lived in San Francisco, but also because glam metal acts such as Motley Crue, Ratt, many others were more popular and I think Slayer decided to fill the void and became an even harsher and darker thrash metal band. That album was released in 1986 which was a hell of a year for thrash with Metallica releasing Master of Puppets, the last album with Burton (R.I.P.), and the Capital major debut of Megadeth's Peace Sells...But Who's Buying? Rick Rubin, who discovered the Beastie Boys, worked with Russell Simmons and Run D-M-C, and produced albums over the years for Danzig, Slayer, Metallica, Tom Petty, Johnny Cash, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, signed Slayer to his Def Jam, later American, records label that I think is connected to Warner Brothers records. Reign in Blood was their major label debut and I know guitarist Kerry King did guitar parts on the Beastie Boys debut album and said if he'd been more savvy that he'd have asked for a percentage instead of $100 and a case of beer because License to Ill hit big in 1986 too. Bigger than many of the aforementioned albums. The record was so short that both the A and B side of the cassette was the entire album. I want share one funny story, sorry for the long comment, but an artist friend of mine who has a side hustle of creating gig posters for bands met about eight years ago with the two remaining original members Kerry King and Tom Araya to show them an image for a poster and possible t-shirt design to be sold on the band's website. It was of a topless demon woman and Kerry asked if he could change it to a man and he said, "Sure, but why?" King, "We don't want to upset our female base." Him, "Wait? You are Slayer, correct? Anti-everything and you are scared of the MeToo movement?" Both nodding and King, "Yeah man! It's scary." True story and keep up the videos. Really enjoying seeing young people discover amazing music from my teen years.

Great reaction. This album was the most extreme metal music back in mid-80s - there had been nothing as aggressive and insane as this at that point. Slayer are a highly influential metal band - most extreme metal bands from late 80s on were influenced by them. Check out Morbid Angel (best death metal band ever imo) for what I would call the next step in this direction - 'Maze of Torment' is a must-listen from their debut album.

Sometimes reactors jump in the deep end with a band to start with. This is Slayers deep end. Its a trash metal masterpiece, but some of their other songs are more palatable to new ears. Seasons in the Abyss, War Ensemble, Skeletons of Society, South of Heaven are better suggestions for a first time listener. Angel of Death is the Magnum Opus.
