well if you want to learn about servers you can start directly from windows server 2012 as far as windows server 2003 is concern not many people are using it now so staying with the latest technology will be a good idea. you also have to check on windows server 2008 as it still widely used in the IT at this time. let me now if you have any questions. Yes All of the Visual Studio Express 2012 products are 100% free to download and use. you just have to register it after the installation completes otherwise the products will be available for use of 30 days and after that you have to register the Visual Studio because it will not open.

Well x86 means 32bit so you can download the x86 version of sql server 2012 express and installed it on 32bit windows. you have to download
ENU\x86\SQLEXPR_x86_ENU.exe
ENU\x86\SQLManagementStudio_x86_ENU.exe

Hey Lin, to change security authentication mode
In SQL Server Management Studio Object Explorer, right-click the server, and then click Properties.
On the Security page, under Server authentication, select the new server authentication mode, and then click OK.
In the SQL Server Management Studio dialog box, click OK to acknowledge the requirement to restart SQL Server.
In Object Explorer, right-click your server, and then click Restart. If SQL Server Agent is running, it must also be restarted.
