  • Hello Rock People! This is the smaller of two caves located near Owen Beach, in Tacoma, Washington (using 360 degree photography). There are no official names for the caves, but they are large enough to walk into. This new cave is a product of geology, glacial history, and ancient earthquakes. A thick layer of glacial lake bottom mud (made of pulverized rock/silt), became cut by a small fault--with sand injected into the fault. The sand-filled fault, formed a locality that could be eroded more easily than the surrounding deposit of lake bottom mud/silt. With daily exposure to high tide, the cave formed and has gradually increased in size. The cave narrows quickly, but is about 5 ½ meters deep (or 18 feet).
I have previously published on CZcams, a video on the larger of these two caves. The adjacent larger cave also is formed from the erosion of a sand dike. Check it out on this CZcams channel! Please "like" and subscribe to this CZcams channel!
Be aware that this cave is in Point Defiance Park. The cave area receives waves and strong currents everyday-as high tide approaches. Visit only during low tides, or you may become wet and trapped between the cliffs and the water. It is best to visit this-and the adjacent larger cave-when the tides are three feet or lower (+3.0 feet). The tides can be +13 feet or more, and at about +8 feet, the tides will be close to the hill where the caves are located--making it difficult to leave the area. Obviously, the park is closed at night. However, low tides--during daytime--are mostly from April to October. The other times of the year, the low tides occur mostly at night. The caves are about half-way between the parking/picnic table area on Owen Beach-and Point Defiance. It is a 15-20 minute walk to get there from Owen beach.
Hello Rock People! This is Dave the Geology Dude. Please be aware that the only way to really learn rock identification, is to have hands-on experience. This is because visual experiences alone do not show properties like hardness, acid reactivity, density, and the range of variables that are common to each rock type. Note: if you don't like the music on this video, you can always turn off the sound and watch with your own music instead. Don't forget that Geology isn't Rocket Science--it's Rock Science! Hello Rock People! This is Dave the Geology Dude! There is more to this video than just a spinning cave. There are detailed notes in the description area of this video. If you want more, longer length rock identification videos are on my CZcams homepage. Check them out, or leave a comment here!

Thanks very much. This large-scale photogrammetry shows the potential for this new media. It’s exciting and I’m quite pleased by the results! I can’t believe that I can do this! Ha ha!

Thx much Jason. Photogrammetry is amazing-when it works. Ha ha. I’m amazed at how quickly the cave has grown. And the video is detailed enough to be able to make an annual record to compare changes over time.

@@tristanlasley8030 you have to walk westward from Owen beach toward Point Defiance-along the beach. The cave is half-way between these areas. It is not near the parking area at Owen Beach
