  • This video features wave-dissipating concrete tetrapod blocks. These manmade structures are designed to interlock along beaches, riverbanks, and breakwaters. The design is meant to dissipate the energy of waves and currents, in order to lower erosion. The location for this tetrapod example is Crescent City, California, USA. Crescent City is the first location in the United States that used tetrapod blocks. However, tetrapods are not as heavy as the somewhat similarly designed dolosse block. It has been found that tetrapods in the Crescent City area are more vulnerable to movement by storm waves, so dolosse block has been added to coastal erosion control structures as well.
The tetrapod was originally designed in 1950 in France. It consists of unreinforced concrete and is extremely common to many areas in Japan [ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetrapo...) ]. Along the Hoh River in Western Washington State, tetrapods are being used for erosion control. Starting in 2023, long pieces of wood with cables (are tied to one or two tetrapods). This design is called dolotimbers when using dolosse (I'm not certain if comparable name is used for tetrapods). [ www.piercecountywa.gov/Docume... ].
Hello Rock People! This is Dave the Geology Dude. The focus of GeologyDude is to compliment other online geology education channels. GeologyDude is not a clone of other CZcams channels. The focus is two things: 1) to teach about geology and rocks--preferably in a non-traditional way (mostly oriented to students and hobbyists), and 2) to influence about how to use 360-degree videos for quality science education. Note that I have other videos with more rock identification information on my CZcams channel. Don't forget that: Geology isn't Rocket Science--it's Rock Science! Please "like" and subscribe to this CZcams channel!

Hello Rock People! This is Dave the Geology Dude! There is more to this video than just a spinning piece of concrete engineering. There are detailed notes in the description area of this video. If you want more, longer length rock identification videos are on my CZcams homepage. Check them out, or leave a comment here.
