    Music Teacher Reacts: Epica - Consign to Oblivion (Live)
    My first Epica video! This was a real treat and I can't believe what they are doing live! Another band to add to my symphonic metal education.
    Thanks for such a great recommendation!

    Consign to Oblivion is one of their most iconic songs, but Kingdom of Heaven is definitely their magnum opus; a 13-minute symphonic prog death metal epic and highlights all of the elements of their music and how they come together.

    This song is super important because it's the closing track for most of their concerts. It's a signature track that showcases Epica's style, although it's an older track and compositionally simpler compared to many of their newer songs. Might I recommend Essence of Silence (official live) ?

    After Forever was quite an influencial band, actually. Not only Mark Jansen was part of it; Floor Jansen (Nightwish) was the lead singer, and keyboardist Joost van den Broek is now a well known metal producer for European symphonic and prog metal bands, as well as he has become an important part of Ayreon. Not sure if you have ever heard of Ayreon, but if you have not then you should definitely check it out. Start with The day that the world breaks down, the official video. I’m sure you will like it.

    • @ferrenberg
      @ferrenberg Před 4 lety +1

      I wouldn't say After Forever was that influential, mostly because the only other bands sounding like them also have Mark Jansen in their lineups. I think that's because of the complexity and genre blending in their music, the main reason why they never went mainstream. I also believe they targeted the wrong audience. Most of the symphonic power metal fans were and is still not prepared for this kind of music. Don't get me wrong, After Forever and Epica are my favorite sympho metal bands, I'll take anything they made over Nightwish or Xandria etc

    The guitarist doing the harsh vocals and speaking to the crowd is Mark Jansen who, as you read, was in After Forever with Floor Jansen (Nightwish's lead vocalist - no family relation). He left due to creative differences and founded Epica with his girlfriend at the time - current lead vocalist Simone Simons. Simone and Floor are close personal friends.
    Simone and Mark are no longer a couple but they still work very well together. Simone is married to Oliver Palotai who is the keyboards player of another power/symphonic metal band: Kamelot (in which Simone was a guest vocalist) . Kamelot was the support band for Nightwish on their Imaginaerum US tour in 2012 and when Nightwish's lead vocalist at the time, Anette Olzon, fell ill just before their Denver concert, Kamelot's touring vocalists Elize Ryd and Alissa White-Gluz covered for her. The decision to go ahead with the concert instead of cancelling it was publically criticized by Anette on her blog which lead to her firing and Floor joining Nightwish.
    Elize was once considered by Nightwish as a replacement for Tarja (the band's original vocalist) in 2005 after they fired her but they thought Elize was too young and inexperienced at the time and chose Anette instead. Elize went on to found Amaranthe, itself an excellent metal band. Parallel to this, on their first album with Anette, Nightwish released a song titled Amaranth.
    The symphonic metal scene sometimes feels like one big family with Nightwish sitting at the end of the dinner table :)

I has a little bit of everything that is Epica in it: Growls, Operatics, Death Metal. Often touted as 'Nightwish's darker sibling'. Mark Jansen and Floor Jansen (no relation) were in After forever together. Simone Simons (singer of Epica) and Floor are close friends. I think they even shared an apartment for a while. YES! Epica is incredible! I suggest "The Essence of Silence," "The Obsessive Devotion," "Kingdom of Heaven," and "Design Your Universe" to start. They have a fantastic catalogue of music. I always feel Mark Jansen is very underrated as a composer and musician. It should also be noted that Simone Simons (the vocalist) does write lyrics for the band as well. I also believe Coen Janssen (the keyboardist) also writes for the band. So there is a lot more writing from the entire band as compared to Nightwish (where Tuomas is the main composer and lyricist).
    Mark Jansen founded After Forever, which was Floor Jansen's (no relation) first metal band. I really suggest checking out After Forever sometime too.

    Epica is a great band, together with After Forever they helped me overcome my initial aversion to those death metal vocals))) After Forever is really worth checking out too, especially if you are curious about symphonic metal. Decipher, the last album (I believe) they made with Mark, regularly makes the lists of top symphonic metal albums ever, especially its gothic/black metal strand (as opposed to the power metal strand where Nightwish comes from). Partially because Decipher is so good, but also because of when it came out, making it very influential for the genre. That album and Epica have the same blueprint, save for swapping out soprano for a mezzo, and, of course, the evolution over time. My personal favorite of their's is Design Your Universe - just like Decipher it opens with a ridiculous string of great song after great song, blending in to be a very satisfying immersive experience. And great lyrics too, that's another Epica hallmark, like my favorite Martyr of the Free World.

    This is from their second album called Consign to Oblivion. Their first album (The Phantom Agony) had a small break through but that was mainly After Forever fans who wanted to check out what Mark had been doing after he left AF.
    Now CtO came out while more and more european symphonic metal heads where searching for something heavier then Within Temptation and Evanescence. So this came out, and it was completely different because they got the death metal influences in there. The song is the last song of the album and ever since the album came out it also has been the last album of a concert. This song is the one song where Epica showcased their talent and uniqueness within this genre. Ever since then they just got bigger and bigger.
    For me as an early listener it's pure nostalgic. Everytime I hear this I remember the 16 year old me in a small cafe witnessing a band that should already be on a grand stage. That they actually accomplished that just makes me so so happy. This song resembles those feelings.
    And I probably got it wrong why this song is so important, but this is how I see it. And I've been following Epica since 2003. And a bit before they released their first album.

    same choir and orchestra who helped them wit backing tracks (the 70-piece Extended Hungarian Remenyi Ede Chamber Orchestra and the Choir of Miskolc National Theatre.) were with them 3h in Epica 10 anniversary (Retrospect show)
    I suggest Phantom Agony

    Haven't finished seeing the video yet, so idk if this will come up later, but Epica's main composer, Mark Jansen (growls and rythm guitar), was with Floor Jansen in After Forever's first two albums, which in my opinion, made After Forever my favorite female fronted band back then (yes, over Nightwish, easy choice).

    Great reaction. I always come back to this video, even if it doesn't give back half of the atmosphere that evening. And yes, the flames were quite hot, even in the first rows in the crowd 😉
    Epica is more metal then Nightwish, heavier, darker. But they write great ballads too. They have a great catalogue of songs really worth checking out. Ariën, the drummer, is called The Beast. Wellm I guess you get why. He and Mark (the guitarist / growler) have a second band called MaYaN. They are even more dense, there is hardly any ginger inbetween the parts of the songs. No compromise for hooklines and... 5 singers. And great instrumentalists. I recommend Saints don't die as this song features all 5 of the singers.

    The band name comes from Kamelot's concept album Epica. Or so the lore says.
    And to make things interesting Simone is married to Kamelot's keyboard player.
    Following this not so thin red line; Kamelot - Elizabeth (live in Oslo). Or Abandoned or Haunting. The latter one is a duet with Simone.
    Keep it up!

    Tbh, I think the most obvious reason for people to specifically request this song (and especially this version) is not so much because it's the quintessential Epica song, but because of the fact that it's a freakin' fun video to comment on. Such a great show. It's completely worth it to watch it again just to focus on the keyboard player alone.
    Good reaction by the way. I'm sooooo glad that you immediately heard that they use background 'tapes'. You have a good ear and understanding of music, my friend.
    Did you notice the rare 7 string Gibson Les Paul? Don't worry, I didn't either. You don't expect Les Pauls to have 7 strings. 😁

    Yeah, I'd love a little background vid. For most "reactioneers" I don't care. I may watch a reaction as a thank you for a channel spreading the word (even if it's only a little) of a band I enjoy, but I may well never come back, because MOST of these channels (including some of the very biggest) offer nothing I don't already know. They are content to Ooo and Ahhh and WHAT?! a few times while hammering their self-promotion ad nauseum. This channel is different because you try to give us something beyond your feelings upon hearing a song - I got a The Islander guitar tutorial ffs! - so I'm invested. Thank you for how you go about this, and for (at least as far as I can tell) being geniune about it.

      Hey, everyone gets to have their faves. It's a matter of personal taste. If Epica hauls your freight ( and they ARE fabulous!) then sing it out. I happen to be UTTERLY enthralled by Nightwish. But I'm finding that this band is kinda interesting, too.

      @ChrisPage68 Před 4 lety +1

      I respect and admire Epica, but haven't fallen in love with them like I have Nightwish. Some of their fans are downright rude if Nightwish are even mentioned in the same breath. It's disrespectful considering the links between the two bands. There should be ample room for both.

    • @ferrenberg
      @ferrenberg Před 4 lety +3

      Don't let Nightwish fans silence you. Most of them think the predictable music they made are groundbreaking and out of this world, so no criticism is allowed. I'll take anything Epica made over Nightwish in a heartbeat

      @bryanthompson973 Před 4 lety +4

      Nightwish is amazing.
      But I gotta give the win to Epica. That doesnt make NW any less awesome - it's just the death metal, more technical guitar work, proggier song structures... it scratches every itch I didn't know I had.
      And I would never compare Simone and Floor. Two of the greatest female voices I've ever heard.
