Occitan and Catalan are two very closely related languages; so much so that early Romance-language scholars considered them to be one language, bundling them together under the single, rather inadequate name of Provençal.
Catalan is spoken by about 9.5 million people. It is the official language of Andorra and an official language, along with Spanish, in Catalonia (Catalunya), Valencia (Comunitat Valenciana) and the Balearic Islands (Illes Balears). It is also spoken in parts of Aragon and Murcia, Pyrénées-Orientales in southern France, and in the Sardinian city of Alghero (l'Alguer).
Occitan language is spoken mainly in southern France, and also in Monaco, in the Aran Valley (Val d'Aran) in northern Spain, and in the Occitan Valleys (Valadas Occitanas) in Italy. Estimates range from 100,000 to 800,000 total speakers . The majority of speakers are elderly and live in rural areas. There are six main varieties of Occitan: Provençal, Gascon, Languedocien, Limousin, Alpine and Auvergnat.

In fact, Catalan found itself in a similar position as the italian "dialects" today, it was despised and only used in the homes and streets. It wasn't until the 13th century that it started being used in the court of Barcelona, and adopted a significant role. The first written text (les homilies d'Organyà) and a historical idol, Ramon Llull, one of the first to write in Catalan, were also from that times. During the 14th century, with the conquests of Jaume I el Conqueridor, started the first catalan colonies around the Mediterranean, most notably the ones in Occitaine, Valencia, Murcia and Sardinia. It wasn't utill the 15th century that the Bible was first translated to catalan, and the "catalan golden century" started, which would leave a huge footprint in catalan culture, values and obviously, literature.

As a native Spanish speaker currently learning French, I found easier to understand Catalan and Occitan at first glance than French when I was a beginner.
This video isn't my first contact with these two magnificent languages, though. I find their similarity very interesting; I correlate it with other cases such as Portuguese and Galician or even Castilian (more commonly known as Spanish) and Asturleonese. Due to the dialect continuum, these two languages seem to be twins, just like other brilliant comment in this video remarked. Sadly Occitan is being replaced with French, but hey, at least it has a co-official status in my country, more precisely in the Aran Valley; where Aranese, a dialect of Gascon Occitan, is spoken and taught.

@@alejandror.planas9802 Are we really sure of this? Language classifications have always been influenced by geography and even politics more than anything. I can see how iberoromance languages could have been all the same language once as they formed in a relatively little region (the Cantabrian range) and then spread southwards, but French, Occitan, Catalan, Galloitalian, old Galia and Northern Italy was a vast region with lots of different influences.

Well "a mix" isn't correct. Catalan is a gallo-romance language, indisputably, so it's more accurately a sibling language to French, and very similar to old french. Castillian is an ibero-romance language, so a cousin language to both Catalan and French. Aragonese would be more of "a mix" as people don't know if its ibero-romance or occitano-romance (gallo-romance)..
