  • Ever wanted to get that iconic late 90's/early 00's Vented Snare sound? Today I drill down (pun intended) into how you can capture the vibe of those vented heavy ply shells popularised by OCDP back in the day. We make our own DIY version of an Evans Dry head to see whether you can get the same sound without drilling into a drum shell, and of course - we attack a poor Dixon snare with a power drill.
    Some interesting results! Let me know what you think in the comments!

    I'm genuinely suprised how much drilling holes in the batter side made a difference. The combo sounds absolutely killer holy shit. Keep up the great work, love these videos!

      I felt the same! It really goes to show HOW critical your heads are to your tone. Thanks mate!

    I've never seen such a good video on vented snares man. This was super interesting to see the tone change in real time. Love them. I'm the same as you. Grew up on Korn, Limp Bizkit, Deftones and Slipknot etc. All the OCDP snares. The John Otto snare of 98 and 99 is my favourite drum sound of all time. Same with the IOWA snare. I've owned a Spaun 13x5 acrylic vented snare and I loved it but it never quite worked in my band for some reason. I have always preferred popcorn snares for some reason. My favourite is my 12x7 Mapex Black Panther. I've played about a million gigs with it and I will always love it. My old band even gigged with Life Pilot a couple of times! But yeah the Black Panther gets me that cranked-to-oblivion limp bizkity tone without the vents

      Helllll yeah dude. Eater of the Sky yeah? By the sounds of it you guys aren’t still active? We really liked your stuff. But yeah dude, those black panther’s are sick. I’ve always been more of a big ass snare sound kind of guy, but you can’t deny how cool and unique that era of snare sound was. I’m digging it a lot coming back to it

    I commented couple of days ago on Deftones video, I wanted this sound for 25 years and finally got myself some money to get it, I bought 30 ply for vents 6.5x14 OCDP snare from Japan, probably made in 2009, last batches of real OCDP. I LOVE IT. I have it on my channel.

    One vented snare I would have killed to get is the Tama Abe Cunningham sig snare. Great vid again dude.

    I think the vented head sounds best in my humble opinion of a drummer who's been playing 40+ years.

      They do different things for sure, but the vented head does sound great and is a pretty versatile way of reigning in ANY snare.

    i wonder why having just a vented head sounded like it gave the more drier tone than having both the head and shell vented? anyways this was such a cool experiment

    Still so mad at how limited at launch and now elusive the Abe Cunninghame sig snare was/is. It's the ultimate vented snare imo, behind that batshit hybrid snare Premier made years ago.

      I’d love to add one to the collection. What is this premier hybrid you speak of? I’ve never heard of it!!

    I've actually been interested in what a snare would sound like with a ported reso head... 🤔 Similar to a kick like you mentioned...

    • @EliGreenDrums
      @EliGreenDrums  Před měsícem +1

      Probably similar to this. I can’t imagine it would be drastically different to a bunch of smaller holes spread out.

      Thanks bro! That last Perth show was brutal. It was the first time I ever had to go back to the hotel and sleep right before our set 😂 I think I’d been awake for about 20mins before we got up there.
