- If you've been around my channels for a while, you'll know that the tunebot features heavily in all of my tuning videos and snare tone deep dives. I've gotten TONNES of messages and comments asking all manner of different questions. In this 25min+ video, I detail what I find so useful about the Tune-Bot, address some common misconceptions, demonstrate how I use it on a beautiful Evetts spotted gum snare, show you some useful workarounds and answer YOUR questions!
Phew... that was a big one! I didn't think this video would be as involved as it is, and there's probably more I could have included! Enjoy!

Brother this is the BEST video I've seen on this tool. What a fantastic explanation of how to get the most from it while mitigating any confusion that can sometimes arise. I would love to see a video with your experience and advice with it on kick drums with a hole cut out for a kick mic and toms too if you're down to complete the series. I'm trying to get that big open Simon Phillips or Keith Carlock sound with my kick & toms and it has been like you said: a steep learning curve. Killer content - keep up the great work!
Thank you so much! I do have a kick tuning video over on my IG, but it’s more specific to a modern rock/metal sound. A Carlock kick video would be pretty sweet!
Exactly how I use it and great explanation. Whatever the argument. Each head can be tuned to an exact note, including top and bottom at intervals apart
You get it!
Vintage drummer, who's over the years have tried many tuning techniques. Tune-Bot has revolutionized drum tuning. Perfect pitch, on a note. Makes all the difference. My drums instantly sounded better..
Pick your resonance level, tune, and play..😊
My dude!!!! Thanks for dropping this video in, been waiting for this 👊
Welcome mate! Hope it helps!
Right on, man. I love the high range function on the Studio Model.
Great addition!
Yeah! I love my studio version a lot🤘🤘🤘
I was about to give up on the tune bot. Thanks for this video! Gonna try it tomorrow.
Awesome! Let me know how you go!
@@EliGreenDrums trying tonight. Stay “tuned”.
Funnily enough, I just pulled the trigger & purchased a Studio model online today, I’m keen to get the most & best sound out of my drums that I can.
Great video Eli, thanks for the advice & knowledge 🙌🏻
Awesome! Hopefully these tips help!
You're the best bro!!! This is super helpful! Cheers :)
thanks for the video, great reminders of the useful settings to get better results. I love using it together with the app - the suggested tunings really help you focus on the differences between reso/batter relationships, trying new tunings, and coping the tunings of tune-bot artists. For gigs I find the tone that I like for that group of tunes and write the numbers right on the head - touch up at intermission if there is one, or get it right back to the same tone the next night. As you mentioned, the sound guy loves it -- me too!
How awesome is that! The app is super useful and very underrated. Great to see someone else using it in the same manner!
This is one of the most comprehensive tuning videos I've seen. I've playing with this little machine for almost one decade, and I've found the same spots on many snare drums I've tuned. So this video is basically a good summary on how to get there. When you say before the tunebot, it felt like there was no final destination to drum tuning, I absolutely felt 100% interpreted on that feeling, because I got through that with this little machine. Finally 294 is my all around standard, 277 for nasty rockish with little muffing, and 233 with tons of tape with that low indie/pop sound. I would like to see a video of Part II on toms and bass drum, where I also found another gems, another nice spots.
Sounds like we’re two peas in a pod mate! I love all those same tuning references! Seems like toms and kick needs to be a thing!
@@EliGreenDrums Yeah, mainly because tunebot reference manual didn't make any sense, at least for me. So, it was like starting from scratch.
This snare soudn awesome Eli. Can u please tell us, more detail such as:
1. Snare Head
2. Mic ( as i c it is a sm57 right) or have u use any other mics to?
3. Reso Head
4. and what u did in Processing ( Gate, Compressor, or what else?)+
Thanks a lot in Advance
I'm 15 and I've got a tune-bot since a few weeks! And man it helped me a lot to increase the drum sound! Love this tool! 🤘🤘🤘
Awesome to hear!
The Tune Bot Gig model is my absolute go to. I have multiple units and keep one in my gig bag. Every person I’ve talked to that’s had issues was simply using it wrong or didn’t understand how to access the features.
Interesting! Have you compared it to other non-gig units? Because I did, and it was very different. And I definitely know my way around these devices. I’d love to think it was an anomaly but have had quite a few similar stories from people who know what’s up with them. Maybe a bad batch?
Awesome video - greatly appreciated!
Welcome! Thanks!
Definitely going to pick one up. Ive made a lot of progress with tuning, but it still a weak spot and having some objectivity MUST help!
Exactly! It’s a great tool for development.
You’re a G for this!!! Thank you.
Great video, very informative thanks!
Glad you got something out of it!
Man that's a nice drum.!
Awesome video as always bro...
I actually like the ring that you think is wild... 😂
Thanks mate! I think it’s cool too but man, you should have heard it in the room! 🔔
Great video !
Thank you!
Great video mate. Love my tune-bot. Love your Dream setup too. I play all Dream as well
Thank you bro! How great are Dreams?!
Great instructional video!🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
Cheers!
Thank you!!! Bought one years ago and could never get it to work the way I thought it should so it’s been sitting in a drawer gathering dust while my drums just didn’t have that sound that I knew they could bring but just could never get get there without a LOT of effort.
Completely understand that frustration! Hopefully these tips can demystify it for you and get those drums sounding amazing!
Thanks for the video man it’s really insightful, especially as I’m in the midst of buying my dream drum kit so it has me considering getting one for helping to tune up the snare and toms as I have never really done it before - related to this, it would be great to get a similar video on how to tune toms with it as I have 4 toms so would like to how to get them tuned (with various high/ low tunings) whilst having them being still the right key apart from each other if that makes sense!
Check my Instagram for the tom tuning reel I made! It is exactly that but for 3 toms. I do have a 5 Tom monster PDP kit at the studio that would be awesome to do a huge Tom tuning video on. Definitely a lot of work but would be cool!
@@EliGreenDrums I actually found the video on your instagram not long after commenting this and it is very insightful so thank you for that! I agree it would be a lot of work, but would be cool to do a big Tom tuning video!
Thank you! 10 out of 10! 🙏🏻🤓
Glad you enjoyed it!
Do you use the snare bottom feature when you’re tuning the snare bottom? Or do you always just leave it on the default drum and head selection?
Yeah I leave it on the default. I’ve noticed no real difference with those settings.
My go-to pitch for my snare that I absolutely love is a B(390hz & 400hz) it gives me the nice attack and tone I want out of a snare🤘🏼
Big sleep token vibes up that high! Love it!
Love the detailed dive! Also, for anyone saying drums shouldn't be tuned to pitches or don't have one, I agree it seems very closed minded. Especially considering how many legend drummers and producers have stated that tuning your drums to fit into a certain pitch of a song can make a massive difference in overall production. If the song is in a specific key, why wouldn't you start by tuning your drums to a key that will compliment it rather than muddying it up? Just my take. Another solid video, dude.
Thank you mate! I completely agree. I had a studio experience where that exact thing happened and we all couldn’t believe how much of a difference it made having everything be dialled into the key.
I'd love a comparison between the Tune bot and smartphone tuning apps. Have you tried any of these apps? I use drumtune Pro paid version and think it's actually very good. But always am thinking about purchasing a TB. I always use 2 tuning keys when I Tune, this has become second nature to my tuning now
Funny you say that, one of the next videos is going to be right up your alley!!
@EliGreenDrums cool. I'm a new sub and am definitely enjoying your channel, really good content 👌
Thank you so much mate!
I get MUCH more consistent results with the Tunebot vs the iDrumTune Pro app. The resonant tuning feature in the IDTP app is super interesting. If you buy his book and read it cover to cover, you'll know why that little tidbit of info is so valuable.
@BeatsAndMeats never tried the IDTP, but it's probably close enough to the Drumtune Pro I'd imagine.
Mine is the studio and jumps around all over the place, tried the filter but literally changes every time. so odd!
That’s interesting. I would check a) how closely tuned the drum head is so begin with, b) how hard you’re striking the drum (louder = more inconsistent) and c) how much of the drumhead is resonating. ie, are you muting the middle of the head and tapping near the edge, and perhaps muting the resonant head to stop any extra ringing? Try those troubleshooting methods!
I have a drum dial and get amazing results. I don’t really care about tuning to notes really. Would I benefit from one of these?
I’m actually going to do some comparison testing against the dial and the tension watch, so hold off on any purchases til that video is made!
@@EliGreenDrums dude that’s awesome! I get so much hate from the drum community when I mention using the drum dial. But when I do I also get people saying, hey you should try the tune bot. I really didn’t know how it worked until I watched this. Nobody cares if a guitarist or bassist use a tuner. 🤷
@@EliGreenDrums Is this going to be a 3 way comparison between the dial, the bot, and the watch? Or just the dial and watch? Bc I think all 3 would be cool.
@allenmitchell09 on no, we’re going all in on this. If I’m going to do it, I’m only going to do it once and compare EVERYTHING 😂
@@EliGreenDrums H to tha mfn yeah! Dude you sound like the type of drummer who’d light a f’n fire under a band and get everybody cooking! Na I appreciate what you’re doing bc this here is breaking new ground in drumming and I’m glad to be apart of it.
08:02 This is not an one full turn but a half one of the key, 180°
You’re not wrong but I call it a full turn because that’s the full rotation of my wrist. It’s a repeatable movement that a lot of drummers refer to that as a full turn, even though it’s obviously 180°
Okay but how do you switch to tune bot to the bottom head
You turn the drum over. You don’t need to switch any modes on the tunebot. I literally never use those settings. Just leave it on the standard tuning screen and go for gold!
@EliGreenDrums that's what I do but I can't figure out how to switch it on the tune bot and it drives me crazy haha
Tune-Bot with some Rock Locks. Then your drums will never go out of tune again!
Love rock locks!!
Struggled with it for a while but once you get the hang of it, it's pretty handy.
Super handy!
My Tune Bot won’t read anything higher than 225
I noticed when I mute the side that I’m not tuning, it helps a lot :) also there’s a high tuning setting on it too
It's a half turn on the drum key. Not a full turn.
I could so do a video on this exact topic, I’m sure there’s a huge divide in drummers as to full vs half turn terminology haha. I say full turn because it’s a full turn of my hand before having to alter my grip.
@@EliGreenDrums But then you turn around and do quarter turns that really are quarter turns. To be consistent those would be half turns.😁
Use a mallet and hold the Tunebot with your hand... makes it a lot more accurate than clipping it to the rim.
I do that when I tune bass drums a lot of the time. I like to be able to mute the head when I tune though, so I find clipping and freeing up the hand works better for me.
@@EliGreenDrums Well obviously it’s working for you so don’t change anything haha! But when I teach people how to use it, I’ve noticed that holding it forces them to really concentrate on how hard they hit the head, and when the Tunebot gives a weird reading, they very quickly start to HEAR that something went wrong, and they try again.. it’s pretty cool!… Now I have NEVER been able to get the Tunebot to work reliably on a kick drum. Whats the secret?
