On the third story, op you DO NOT owe anyone an explanation at all, I here NY is an expensive place to live, so say NO. I had not let the story finish before writing this. You are NOT the jerk.

The first story: Absolutely NOT the jerk. The mooching mother-in-law needed to hear that. I have to call into question the narrator's assumption that OP's verbal takedown “set her straight.” I guarantee you it didn't. Mother-in-law is the type of person to go around playing the victim to anyone who would listen while acting like everyone else is wrong. Her reaction to ban OP from the family just demonstrates her utter lack of emotional maturity.

I despise the last minute customers that come in and take forever to shop. I pretty much don’t allow any last minute customers into the store anymore.
If it takes me 15 minutes to shut down the store, fifteen minutes before closing I lock the door and flip the “Closed sign around before completing _anything_ else. I’ve heard door rattling and “Heeelllloooo?”, but I ignore it. I am literally clocked out and out the door at closing time, often required to be so.

My ex-wife set up a surprise birthday party for a close friend of mine on her 50th birthday... but when it came to my 50th birthday, just a few months later, I KNEW she wasn't planning on doing jack shit for me, so I arranged my own special birthday by planning my own trip to a special motorcycle event up state. This was to the point of me buying a hitch for my truck and installing myself as well as setting up a special dolly for the hitch that allows me to haul just one bike without a trailer. When I got there, my extended family set up a party for me and I was camping next to my half-sister, all of whom I never really knew that well because we never really knew about each other for the longest time. Even though it actually snowed that weekend, it was still pretty special for me.

Story 1: OP is crossing lines in my opinion. Its not her place to say that. If she was concerned, she should have told her boyfriend to address his mother about it. Is the $50 hers? Do they share finances? Do they live together? Who does OP think she is to berate her boyfriend's mother...she is not a fiancée not the mother of a grandkid or even a wife. Sometimes people bring unnecessary drama to themselves.

Standing up for your significant other regardless of the title is something every other significant other should do. If my girlfriend was being pressured and guilt tripped into giving money no matter how much it was, you best believe I would put my foot down right in front of whoever is doing that to her.

I'm a little concerned about how op is behaving in the first story. Maybe the mother-in-law has a bad attitude about it but children should want to take care of their parents when they reach their golden years. This woman was a stay-at-home mom, she has no work experience and couldn't get a job even if she wanted one and, depending on where they live, she's not getting social security either. She may be getting the pensions from her exes but sometimes that's just not enough. It's not the government's job to take care of a parent's kids and it's not the government's job to take care of the elderly. That's always been a family matter.
I'm also concerned about the girl with a two-bedroom apartment who lives by herself...In New York, which is supposedly one of the most expensive cities to live in. If she doesn't have, or want, a roommate then why pay for the extra bedroom? Wouldn't it be cheaper to get a one bedroom? And if she did that her family probably wouldn't be bugging her about her cousin.
