      Hi alan robinson,
      It's a very simple fly and one you should always have in your box in any size and colour, it's great to hear that you had a great day fishing them...

    Great pattern. I will tie some before I head out to the lake today. My son, who is 6, was using your Carron Dabbler pattern last weekend and caught his very first Rainbow Trout. 14" in length. After looking at it for a minute we put it back in the water to hopefully fight it again one day!!! Thanks for the lessons. They seem to be paying off.

    Very nice, Davie! I think that foam/hare's ear version would be great as a top dropper with a single or two midges below it on a certain lake I know! Will have to tie and try :-)

    Hi Davie
    I bought a beginners fly tying set a couple of weeks ago and now I'm running out of materials. What materials would you suggest I should buy. I'm mostly thinking of tying dry flies, emergent's, nymphs and buzzers, so if you could suggest something to get me going I would greatly appreciate it. And what colors are "essential".
    Thanks from Finland!
    P.S your videos have been of great help, thanks again.

    I'm wondering if the foam version is buoyant enough to fish on the point in washing line style, with a couple of the unweighted versions on droppers - allowing the whole rig to fish just under the surface? Just wondering how the foam fly is typically used as it is a very interesting pattern.

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi garyweglarz,
      It can, you just have to use enough foam to suit the flies you are fishing, I have another version which is a combination of a hopper and the shipmans which is also a good pattern to use in the method...I have attached a link to it for you to see..

      @@DavieMcPhail - thank you Davie, I will check that pattern out also. You probably know that just as euro-nymphing has finally caught on here in the States over the last several years, so too are U.K. stillwater techniques and flies finally starting to gain popularity here and up in Canada. Living in southern California I have mainly reservoirs rather than natural lakes to fish, so I'm planning to explore everything from fishing boobies on fast sinking lines to buzzers and nymphs using the washing line technique this coming summer. I really appreciate your posts. Thank you.

    Are these type of flies just for the rainbow fisheries, or are they also fished on the wild lochs.,for the brown trout.

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  Před rokem

      Hi Robert,
      I've caught many wild brown trout on these flies especially in the lochs though the one tyed with the CDC works really well on the river...

      @DavieMcPhail  Před 9 lety

      HiDewi Jones,
      You can easily use this fly especially the one in which I used the CDC feathers as it would give a good impression of a few nymphs emerging..

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  Před 8 lety

      Hi Chris Price,
      It depends on the size of the fly but I would say 3 to 5mm square would be enough to float size 16s to size 12s..

      @DavieMcPhail  Před 8 lety

      Hi Dewi Jones,
      Yes you can, as I do at times colour them to suit the fly and you can also use fluorescent pens to brighten them up when the light is not so good...
