  • Guild Wars 1: "Prophecies" game movie in English. Eternalizing the best MMO of all time -- at least in my opinion! Seriously, there's no other MMO even remotely like it. ArenaNet created an absolute masterpiece.
    You'll find the other voiced languages in the same playlist.
    Highlights in the English version:
    - Fort Ranik (5:02): Siegemaster Lormar is a bit of a highlight.
    - Nolani Academy (10:13): Rin burns, but we don't really see it. Just imagine a whole city ablaze, with Stormcaller's sound producing rain and extinguishing those flames, saving Rin. The cinematic could have done a bit better in this regard, actually.
    - Borlis Pass (14:20): King Jalis Ironhammer's accent
    - The Frost Gate (19:10): Dagnar's voice, but only at the very end
    - D'Alessio Seaboard (26:05): Those effin' undead fighting the Mantle in the background of the ceremony! It's inevitable -- even if you kill everything in the vicinity. If you're lucky the undead spawn far enough away, but that happened only in my French and Spanish versions.
    - Aurora Glade (37:37): When the group cheers, you hear several male voices. I guess the game wasn't really expecting all-female parties like mine ;)
    - Sanctum Cay (43:11): Pay attention to how the player character says "What? Who?". It's an example for the voices having been recorded separately, without knowing the context. There's more examples for this, in other cinematics.
    - Dunes of Despair, Elona Reach, Thirsty River (49:25 ff.): The same "male cheers" as in "The Wilds" mission can be heard, despite the Ghostly Hero being the only male character present.
    - Augury Rock (52:54): What's missing in the video? A transport platform. It's in the little room the player character enters at the very end, but it's not displayed in the videos. Sadly, because now it makes no sense why the player should go into that room. You VERY briefly see it in the German version.
    - Iron Mines of Moladune (1:02:16): The Seer -- the voice actress must have had so much fun with her :D

    The plot of Prophecies is more like a bizarro fever dream of fantasy tropes in a trenchcoat than a story, but I had fun playing through it.

    I’m half watching this for research and half watching it to relive my literal childhood (started playing this game when I was, like, 8), and am mildly amused by the timeline-breaking shenanigans that is having adult Gwen running around when we saw her literally-a-child self picking flowers not two years prior.

    The opening cutscene for Prophecies is pure nostalgia for me. I love the premise of Pre-Searing so much!
    I find it interesting that music I associate with the Crystal Desert plays during the ending cutscene for Ruins of Surmia. Also, what's up with that human portal magic? It never comes up again in anything as far as I'm aware.

    • @Paradise7D
      @Paradise7D  Před 3 lety +2

      We see all kinds of portals in all GW1 campaigns, but this particular kind of magic isn't seen anywhere else, that's true -- quite fascinating if you ask me. The soundtrack, yes :) It's a wonderful fit. Many cinematics employ soundtracks from other regions, but the Ruins of Surmia truly stand out. The Crystal Desert theme is so perfect here :D

    Thanks for putting this together! Despite enjoying my step into Guild Wars, the sequel is where I've made my home, so I thought I'd look up a video like this one to get caught up on the story of GW1 in case it becomes relevant as I level through GW2. This was quite entertaining!
    From a story perspective, I do find it a little bizarre that the opening's antagonistic force (the Charr) are seemingly never brought up again. But maybe that happens in a GW1 expansion or in some nuance I missed between cutscenes.

    • @IssacSir
      @IssacSir Před 6 měsíci +2

      Ah yes, in Prophecies we lose against the Charr and flee from Ascalon, which then falls to the charr, with all who want to follow Prince Rurik over the shiverpeaks into Kryta only to get caught in an other even larger potential conflict, as the survivors of acalon integrated into the human nation of kryta. At the end we fulfill the flameseeker prophecies and actually open the door of komalie, a gateway to the realm of torment, releasing the titans or "the flame" of the flameseeker prophecies who are also the "false gods" of the charr, who also gave them the cauldron of cataclysm responsible for the searing event. The titans then invade Tyria all over the place so we travel around killing them. Later on in nightfall we actually face Abaddon the forgotten god, who was in control of the titans and through them ordered the charr to attack the three human nations (Orr, Ascalon and Kryta). Then later in Eye of the North expasion we return to the charr plotline by traveling to the charr homelands in the far north and face they shaman caste that are struggling with controlling the charr after the fall of the titans, and have turned to torturing their own keeping their power at all cost. But again a much larger conflict is happening in the background concerning the rise of the great destroyer. So the charr are not brought up again as the core antagonistic force as the ascalon nation did fall and the human survivers rally in kryta the last of the three human nations of Tyria. Afterwards we face the titans, the God Abaddon and later in the storyline of stopping the destroyers we also solve the underlying issue of the charr culture killing their shaman caste.

With that said, I've always found the male voice actor in prophecies was more enthralling, and would have liked to see him in this. Will you consider a male hero redo, just so people can see for themselves which they'd rather progress as? Let's face it: proph is the most challenging, difficult, mind-numbing version, which necessitates more than mere tolerance of one's character to complete.

Later on in Guild Wars Beyond the Titans, big creations from the foundry, escape and wreck havoc on Tyria requiring the heroes intervention.

    I've played 4000 hours of GW2, and this reminded me that the "magi-tech" aesthetic of the second game is quite hideous It's like going from The Last Airbender to Legend of Korra, but much, much worse. The "modernization" of the setting really compromises a lot of its appeal. I hope if they ever make a third game, they tone it down. The "Pact" assets are particularly ugly, glaringly so, in Orr. Same with the Aetherblades.

      Despite gw1 asura and golems?
      It would be plain strange to not implement such technology in a 250 years span.
      In fact core GW2 did a great job specifically during season 1 with the jubilee and the mechanical army that Scarlett overtook.

    We all need GW1 with the original ideas and character building and skillset mechanics, only with updated graphics for mobile gaming (maybe crypto-gaming, the new market rising)! There's a game for mobile, World War Heroes, imagine a GW1 game based on the combat mechanics and movement of this world war heroes game. It would be totally amazing to play such a game. GW1 is my all time favourite game. It was a bliss to play when it came out.

      Gw1 is superior in many many ways! I absolutely love the gw1 story and many many aspects from the game. Plus for a weekly raider like me gw1 mursaat white mantle arc is so well done in the first 4 raid wings!

      @@Azsharah good for you, but we are fundamentally looking for different experiences. I have never done a raid, and likely never will. the strike mission requirement for the siege turtle in GW2 is literally the only reason I don't have the turtle.
      I play guild wars because of the beefy catmen, and I don't understand how people keep missing that about me.

      Which I don't really agree. I love gw1 but not being able to jump over a 1millimeter terrain elevation is infuriating. It's fine to love something and change what's wrong with it. I don't think many will disagree about ho painful the lack of axe-Z was.

      There is nothing stopping you from playing GW1 right now. Why do you need it on "current game engines"? Are you talking about consoles or dev stuff? This is a ridiculous comment.

      @@encycl07pedia- every time I try to play it it is riddled with bugs and my pc crashes like 9000 times. And I built my own system it never has issues. Gw1 runs shit on anything past win 7 it is a fact. I have tried on my stock asus laptop too and it literally just closes after 5 mins. Anet stopped caring about gw1 when gw2 dropped its a fact. And besides major cities the game is pretty dead.
