How an African Swamphen forages

Watch how these big birds with large feet clamber through marshes and pull out submerged vegetation with their strong bills. My favourite thing is how these African Swamphens grip a stem with their massive foot and eat pieces off. One of our prettiest and more colourful waterbirds.

I remember seeing these birds while on one of my Southern Spain trips over the years. They are strange looking due to their size. In the UK we have Moorhens that look like mini versions of Swamphens.

We have moorhens here too but they are black and more drab and smaller than these swamphens.
