  • This is a video of a Eurasian Coot (otherwise known as the Common Coot or by the Scientific Name of Fulica atra). The bird is on the main lake at the Brockholes bird reserve just off the M6 near Preston and was filmed on the 20th August 2023.
We are sat in the seating area on the main floating visitor centre; and the bird we are looking at right now is a Eurasian Coot. Despite being a water-bird, the Coot is not a duck - instead it is a member of the Rail and Crake family. Coots are slightly larger than their more colourful cousins the Moorhen.
The Coot has a slate-black body and a glossy black head, with a white bill and a white face shield on the front of its forehead. They have noticeable red eyes. Males and females are similar and the juvenile birds have a white breast and are slightly paler in tone. Chicks are black and fluffy with a red-coloured head. They develop the black colouration after 3 to 4 months and the white face shield when a year old. There can be up to 8 eggs in a clutch. They will all be fed in the nest for a few days. The brood will then be split into two with each half being looked after by one parent alone for the next 25 days or so.
The Coot can be a noisy and highly-territorial bird making loud trumpeting calls as it attacks other birds - especially Coots and other waterbirds. Coots are reluctant to fly and often run across the water or the land to deal with predators or intruders. They will often hit other birds with their feet - these having long toes with obvious lobes of skin, instead of webbed feet.
Coots bob their heads as they swim and dive from a little jump to feed underwater. The nest is a bulky bowl-shaped structure which will either be floating or near shallow water.
