    Thank you for this video; I am currently learning more about hand stripping so I can hopefully strip mine at home, and watching your technique was incredibly helpful. You did a beautiful job on this lovely Border.

    @srborders  Před 12 lety

    @zeeet Border Terriers have a double coat which requires stripping the top coat out when overgrown, the hair is dead of no use so should never hurt when plucking unless it has a poor example of a coat which is then maybe best to be clipped instead & yes they do shed a lot.

  • @srborders
    @srborders  Před 13 lety +1

    Thank you everyone, it takes just under 2 hrs for a full strip, he's so good as his Breeder who strips him had him well used to it from being a pup.

    Hi it is a ‘Hauptner’ blunt stripping knife but used purely only to remove excess undercoat after a strip as Mitch has a very thick undercoat, anyone using a knife for this purpose will need to ensure they are light-handed with it as otherwise they could scratch the dogs skin :)

    @srborders I've done some reading and people everywhere are recommending the BTs for allergy sufferers, since "they almost don't shed". Is that false then?

    Iill be getting a border in the near future . I"ve used the "Furminator " on other breeds with good results. Cavaliier King Charles Spaniel and Labs. What is your opinion on this option for eliminating the under coat as the hand stripping seems to do? I"ll apreciate all your advice on this subject ! thanx

    This is great - and reassuring that I'm doing the right thing. i've tried using various knives but find it easier to do it by hand. Just out of interest, what is that knife you're using on the legs at the end?

    One of my clients asked me about stripping but her borders hair is not puffy like I would expect when it's ready and according to her it never does. it's quite flat but he is losing all that top coat like crazy, I'm not well up on borders as idon't get that many so is it possible that he is ready to be stripped? Or is it just better to blast and card him?

    My BT wouldn't stand for this either. My thumbs get very sore, too. Wish he didn't shed so much.... The allergy thing may be more about the dander. BT's have remarkably clean, odor free coats without much dander, but they do shed. Unlike other dogs I've known, you can pet a BT and your hand don't come away smelling. They do not require frequent bathing. This guy is adorable. More blue than mine. All BT's are adorable.

    Any advice on border terriers with a soft coat? We have a blue and tan, neutered. Her coat looks ready to strip but we've been advised to clip her instead due to her soft coat. Any advice? She also doesn't like the hand stripping.

    • @AsterDisaster
      @AsterDisaster Před 7 lety +1

      Get a Mars rake and run it through the coat. It will help get a lot of the soft undercoat out. I've been able to get a completely soft coated Norwich Terrier into a rough coat, but it took months and a lot of patience.

    Super job!......It takes time though, but really rewarding. My border(Elliot) used to be so happy after a full strip.I used to stand in front of him and strip forwards( in the direction the hairs grow) which i found easier and quicker.The biggest problem is keeping the dog still !! Great video for newcommers.

    I have been looking for a dog and I stumble across this wonderful mutt. And it seems hand stripping the dog is "grooming". May I ask, does it hurt the dog because it doesn't look like its in pain.

    • @Synexin
      @Synexin Před 9 lety

      Syncro the Cat No. If the hair is ready to come out, it will come out very easily - you do not need to pull hard. If the hair is ready to shed then this will not hurt the dog, no. Most will tolerate being stripped just fine as it is not uncomfortable when done right.

      You can get a very specialized powder that you can puff onto the coat before stripping - A unique stripping powder which is 100% natural and contains diatomaceous earth and an absorptive mineral. A soft, light powder which adds fantastic grip during hand-stripping. Simply shake over the coat and begin hand stripping.

      A couple of times a year for a pet. More often for a show BT. I time one to be just before the heat of the summer - like in late May. Then 6 months later, it's November and winter coming on - but a nice warm winter doggy coat compensates for stripping the fur just before winter's chill.

    I really like the unstripped look, is there a downside to not hand stripping and leaving them natural?

    • @billd.3150
      @billd.3150 Před 5 lety +1

      The outer coat dies and doesn't shed out on its own, so for a house pet about twice a year it needs to be pulled out, or "stripped". It DOES NOT HURT THEM! - on the contrary, it feels good. Leave it in and it feels itchy and hot. Unstripped, they look dry and messy. There are several breeds of terrier that need to be stripped regularly. A "stripping knife" - a very specialized tool - is used in certain areas to help pull the outer coat. It does not cut the hair - just helps to grip the fur with the thumb pressed against the fine-comb like "stripping knife".

    Beautiful job, he looked amazing. I understand that this is a process used with Border Terriers but you can't help but wonder, as a novice, why combing wouldn't work sufficiently, especially if you are not actually working with show dogs. The breed is really appealing but the stripping is off putting.

    • @RBNightlinger
      @RBNightlinger Před 8 lety

      +Meg Reilly You don't 'have' to hand strip a terrier. Many, if not most, pet terriers are clipped. Of course, only hand stripping will 'build' the hard, wiry coat that is desirable in terriers. Clipping, while you'll end up with the 'look' (of sorts), the coat will forever be soft and feathery.

    • @johodgson2302
      @johodgson2302 Před 8 lety

      +RBNightlinger Thanks, I imagine that as long as the coat isn't left to it's own devices I can see there wouldn't be too much damage done. We have always had long coated dogs, Berners, Pyrs and Goldens so this type of coat is alien to us. They are a very cute breed but we have no experience with terriers.

  • @ArEnTwECoOl4
    @ArEnTwECoOl4 Před 12 lety

    should you hand-strip the terrier before or after a bath?

    • @billd.3150
      @billd.3150 Před 5 lety

      Before for sure. After bathing, the fur is much harder to get a grip on. In fact, you can do even better getting a grip on the fur with a unique stripping powder which is 100% natural and contains diatomaceous earth and an absorptive mineral. A soft, light powder which adds fantastic grip during hand-stripping. Simply shake over the coat and begin hand stripping.
      Borders do not need a bath often under normal circumstances. They don't seem to develop "doggy odours" as much as other dogs do.

But she always bites me, even though she is in full blow and the fur is lose and dead, she will always turn round and nip. Never hard, she's the best dog. But she grumbles and mouths you. Is there any way i can stop this behavior? When we sent her to the groomers they got the clippers and shaved her fur. Ik you are not supposed to cut a borders fur so i wont be taking her back there!

    • @uratube2
      @uratube2 Před 9 lety +9

      Trust me... I have border and he is not being hurt. If I'm stripping the other dog he gets jealous and wants his coat off as well. It's more cruel to leave them with a thick scruffy coat when the weather or central heating leaves them cooking in their own fur. You cant do this to all dogs. Only those with two coats. The coat should never be cut with clippers as they lose their water repellent and heat retention plus it gets all matted and itchy.

      It really isn't hurting the dog. At no time is this lovely little border terrier in distress. The groomer was very good with him/her. Hand stripping maintains the proper colour and texture of his coat - staying true to his breed. A great job.
