The Durban Botanic Gardens is currently Africa's oldest surviving botanic garden and remains a national and local city asset actively contributing to plant conservation and plant-based education. The Durban Botanic Gardens Trust was established in 1993 to support the Gardens key strategic areas in biodiversity, culture, education, heritage, horticulture, people and plants, and research.
The Garden is situated in the heart of the Berea, on the east coast of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. This 15 hectare botanic garden was established in 1849 and is Africa's oldest surviving botanic garden and the city's oldest public institution.
The Durban Botanic Garden curates major collections such as cycads, palms and orchids and, in true tradition of a botanic gardens, is really several gardens within one.
The indigenous and exotic nature of the collections promotes a very rich teaching and learning garden, to better understand the world of plants.
Plants weird and wonderful, from the remarkable ones that feed us, clothe or house us to those that simply inspire us and stretch our imaginations, are all landmarks to be marveled at in the Durban Botanic Gardens.

I remember the tea garden well, their crumpets were really popular..but the vervet monkeys seemed to always appear at lunchtime and swipe stuff from tables! 😮🌺

Really.... I wonder why its not open anymore... do you know when did it close?

I have no idea why it closed. There were elderly people assisting with making the goodies in the kitchen and it was always so nice to have a chit chat, I just know they enjoyed interacting with the folks visiting the park as well. It would be nice for the elderly to get involved again, their input on society is so needed. 🌺

Botanical gardens are not created for camping. They are for day visitors and don't have the necessary facilities like ablution facilities.
