  • We visited Durban city centre with a purpose - to visit Patel’s vegetarian restaurant. It is definitely one of the busiest food places we have been to in a while to the point where you have to special skills to work here.
The curries available at Patel are always set, so if you want to visit, your choices are:
    Moong Dhall
    Sugar beans curry
    Broad beans curry
    Mixed veg curry.
You will find Patel’s @ 202 Yusuf Dadoo Street (formerly Grey Street)
    Situated in Durban City Centre.

Thank you for bringing back special memories.
The 80's and the 90's were the best ever.
I worked in central Durban. The mixed vegetable bunny was the best at that time.
It is good to know that Patels still exits. We relocated in 2000.

I worked at the Durban Housing Action Committee situated at Kara Centre... Patels was our go to place for delicious affordable bunnies and bhajias that our activist salaries allowed for... sadly our City Centre does not allow for safe shopping any more... will definitely nake a trip to town to get the Patels bunnies... what memories and experiences.

Thank you for sharing your memories. Took us a while to make the trip to the CBD for the safety reasons but I don’t regret it. However, don’t think I will make a shopping trip anytime soon. You won’t regret the trip to Patel’s.

Was born and raised in the area., the Casbah. Wonderful days in our Casbah of old.Patels still standing there from the local businesses. City centre has changed so much , used to be regular chowing der but don't go much into city centre any longer. Town was clean, neat and safe cos we played on the streets , was safe even in the evenings.

I agree town was clean and safe you could do ur shopping, walk to just doughnuts in pine street.. now the place is not safe.. Best my nani was one of the cooks one there b4 Patels took over she worked with them n started to sell vegetables. They had abt 3-5 ppl cooking the owner himself used to cook n check all meals..as well she made her spices at the restaurant n created new recipes with moong dhal n gram dhall. victory lounge was in competition. Gori manjara was next the next stop. Desi on warwi😢was neat n safe my uncle was the head chef before moving to Maharani to be head chef.. Now cheffing is still in our blood

Is it safe to walk around the City ? I'm from Aus and I remember SA from 90s , we used to go to Patels as Uni students , GC Kapitan (its closed I believe) , Victory Lounge , the iconic Gobble and Go (on Pine) when the Dad was alive (you probably wont know what I'm talking about) and Juicy Snacks, so many places. I miss Durban so much , I walked to the Wheel and spent so much time in Workshop and West Street. My personal opinion of Patels is that its a cheap meal but everything tastes the same and thats no insult - it is what it is , its a legend. GC Kapitan was another level of vegetarian. Sorry for long post - memories. Loved the video, bless you for chatting to old man and I remember him so well.

We were not brave enough to walk around the city as we have been victims of robbery. We were fortunate to find parking close to Patel’s and there are police presence in this area. We loved reading your comment and sharing these memories with you. Sometimes just speaking of a place can bring back memories of those no longer with us. Even though it was a long time ago, we are impressed that you remember the names of these places so clearly. Both of us definitely have memories of Gobble and Go and Victory Lounge (which still exists in some suburbs. Pravin says he remembers GC Kapitan being a more ‘larnie’ place, lol. Hope we can share some Durban highlights with you so don’t miss it too much!

Penda has been around quite a while, quite right burfee family, but made instantly, unlike traditional burfee which involves making a syrup. The creaminess comes from other ingredients n variations which could include condensed milk , fresh or desert cream among others

Awesome job guys. Penda (pronounces as "Panda" as in panda bear) is a Gujarati sweetmeat in the Barfi family as you said. But a bit more dense and fudgey. Made only with milk solids, and flavoured with saffron and elachi.
