Exterior Trim - Garage Door

  • In this clip I remove and replace the jambs, brick molding ( casing ) and vinyl door sweeps on two garage doors. I use pre-primed 1 x 6 for the jamb work and pre-primed brick molding for the casing. Of course all cuts are back primed for longevity. I fill and caulk all the trim and then apply two coats of paint. I finish the job off by installing the vinyl door sweeps and checking the operation of the doors.
    Tools used in this clip:
    DeWalt 12" Chop Saw - amzn.to/2zXu777
    Milwaukee 12V Circular Saw - amzn.to/2YRD63C
    Milwaukee 12V Jigsaw - amzn.to/3dVa6ML
    Milwaukee 12V Oscillating Saw / Multi Tool - amzn.to/3dTDwuG
    DeWalt Air Compressor - amzn.to/3c3czoe
    Air Hose - amzn.to/2Wo8x2R
    Porter Cable 15GA Nailer - amzn.to/2LP1bR4

      I wish I could but they would copyright strike my channel if I played it during the clip. You have to have the rights to any music to play it during the clips. Its kind of a bummer because it means no music while I work. Thanks for watching

    You pointed out that the previous carpenter nailed right through the J-channel, but you didn't bother to replace it. That J-channel now has all these open holes (you removed the nails). Water will pool in the bottom of the J-channel and leak directly onto all the new wood you installed. I bet the paint will begin to discolor in a few years, and the wood will start rotting within 5-10 years because of all the moisture that is certain to build up underneath the hole-ridden J-channel.
    However, all is not lost. If you get back to this garage, replacing the J-channel around the garage door shouldn't be too much work. With new J-channel, the wood should be good for many decades to come.

      You are correct, but, since this siding uses aluminum j channel it will be a hairy installation process. The issue has been addressed. Keep me honest....I appreciate the comment

      This homeowner had Behr paint, so, I used that brand for this project. I normally would use Sherwin Williams brand paint. It is more expensive, but, I prefer working with it. I'm glad you enjoyed the project and thanks for watching

    Starting at 2:19 (and ending before nailing into the shims) what are you nailing into. Also how did you know how low to hang the horizontal 1x6? Thanks!

    • @horstcarpentry
      @horstcarpentry  Před 2 lety

      I was toe nailing into the stud just to hold it temporarily. At 2:27 I gauged the height of the 1 x 6 using a scrap of the brick molding to ensure it will fit. Thanks for the comment

    I just need the top jab and trim replaced, the person who supposedly fixed it just caulked patched it. Do you know cost and who to call to fix/ replace it?

    • @horstcarpentry
      @horstcarpentry  Před 2 lety +1

      If it is trimmed with wood then the jamb and trim probably cost around $50. The labor will vary a lot depending on where you live. I would charge $750 all in for labor and materials including painting. You should look for a handyman or carpentry company to help you with this repair. Thanks for watching

    • @susie11
      @susie11 Před 2 lety +1

      @@horstcarpentry thank you,yes just need the top part as my ex backed a truck into it then had it caulked. Paid to have it replaced and I think they just putty it. Wonder if I could pull it off and do it myself?

    • @horstcarpentry
      @horstcarpentry  Před 2 lety +1

      If they nailed the vertical boards together with the upper jamb then removing it will be a pain. They may have just installed the jamb top first then sides, but, this also will make it harder to remove the top without disturbing the sides. I'm sure that's why whomever came to "fix" it before cheated and ran. If you have the tools and a willingness to try then I'm sure you could do it. Just watch CZcams videos to learn how to do it....🙂

    • @susie11
      @susie11 Před 2 lety +1

      @@horstcarpentry they definitely did cheat. Doesn't look replaced just filled and caulked. the filler washed away,rains a lot here. Hard being a girl for stuff like this. Charged me a ton.

    • @horstcarpentry

      Guys like that make me look great. I had a customer once that was stunned when I just showed up when I said I would. It's amazing how bad some solo guys are, but, some companies are just as bad. It's really hard to say there's a way to avoid it happening. I can only say that you should make sure the company is licensed and bonded to start. Then get multiple quotes and tell them that you are doing so. If anyone balks at that then dump them because it's a sign. After that I would ask for references and call them to verify. You won't get the cheapest guy in in town by doin this, but, sometimes you've just gotta pay for quality. I use subcontractors that are cash only, but, I've worked with them for years and know what I'm getting. I hope this helps you. Girls can do anything a guy can do. Biggest tool to fight that is knowledge so you can know when someone is taking advantage of you.
