MR GDB over and OUT!
I'm a touring caravan owner, you've right of course, no MOT's needed for caravans or trailers...daft IMO. I have my caravan fully serviced every year (some dont bother), and i check the torque on every wheel bolt everytime I take my van on the road (again most dont bother). Great job done here, cant believe how quick you got it sorted.
Agreed, Caravans should have an MOT same as any other road vehicle imo. I personally know three owners who do no maintenance at all on their death traps. Also its alarming the state i have seen a lot of hitches in, rotted out just waiting to fail. End of the day a fully loaded caravan at speed is a LOT of potential energy. While them separating is not very common when it happens it can be very destructive.
In New Zealand, it doesn't matter how old, or new any trailed connection is (and by trailed, I mean every type size and variant of towed behind vehicle, normally called "because it trails along" a TRAILER).
Trailers can be very light (tiny wee things) to normal Trailer/Caravan - and yes they are IN that class, the everyday workers flat deck, or holiday full house or portable job site (Portaloo and workshop) what'sit, "shed on wheels", for a workers jobsite / office "larger trailer".
These are in the same / similar class as boat trailers, which also need regular WOF tests.
Fail a test and it needs to be recertified at a proper certifying garage, before it can be issued a new WOF/
Then there are the HEAVY trailers, normally towed behind Heavy Goods Vehicles, either as single axle units, or as full trailers, called combined trucks (you call 'em lorries), which have to pass a Certificate of Fitness.
These used to be every six months, but since 2000, now are allowed to be every year (same as modern cars).
BUT, fail a COF and it's off the road with it, until it can pass a retest at a heavy goods vehicle certifier, such as VTNZ
Think that Mercs a keeper Greg, total all rounder, and that low loading angle.Slippery Jim's save the day again. Stay safe bud.
Yo Yoo! She is a keeper for sure, worked wonders only had her for a week! Thanks for watching GDB!
That hato lady is famous she was on a tv series she found a young man who took he’s own life huge respect for her still working that job after what she went through
Yes i knew ive seen her before!! Lovely bunch of officers to be honest. Rather than most that moan and bicker and keep pestering, very pleasant hopefully work with them again one day soon. Thanks for watching GDB!
Great job greg, good to see 3 traffic officers that we're nice, polite and helpful, good to see the nerc earning and will look awesome once stickered up🤟👍
Pretty sure Karen the traffic officer was in the series "Life in the fast lane" a 4 part documentry done about the M6 about 8-10 years ago.
Yes probably think shes been with highways for quite some time! Fair play! Thanks for watching GDB!
as soon as i saw her thats what i thought aswell
I'm reli starting to like the videos
Job nicely done 😊
You have the patience of a saint
Get one of those adapters that go into the tow hitch then you just hook the winch on.
Nearside leg's down on caravan and two slippery Jim's under the legs, piece of piss.
Glad I'm retired, I'd had enough of dealing with vehicles that shouldn't have even been on the road, picked caravanet up North Bound on that section that lost a wheel but it wasn't just the wheel! It was the wheel, hub, suspension leg, spring and all the mounting brackets! Rotten has a pear!
Thanks for watching! GDB
The hammer you have is a deadblow, that's what the traffic officer was on about.
Thats the one!
Great job ladies and gents. Loved the banter in the background when she used your Sunday name Gregory. ps I'm OCD about my tools too, clothes live on the floor :)
Would it have helped if you had some wheel skates ? I know the slippery Jim’s worked but thinking about the next caravan job you might get. Got the job done though with the tools you had so it’s a winner. 👍🏽😎
Great video Greg!! Congratulations on 18k subscribers 🎉
you gotta love SMART motorways. A genius idea, just to keep the traffic moving 😜😜😜
Unlike the not-so-smart operators, who are still NOT up to speed, on how it works better when they actually do some work.
Well done.. 👍
When you open your drivers door, there is one part of the door (where the locking mechanism lies) that faces sideways, and the metal plate parts facing backwards (if you open it full). I put conspicuity reflective tape pieces on mine, after i saw an accident like that. its inexpensive really. I bought the 3m one, that they put on the european refrigerated trailers, it stays on metal quite nice. Also if you want precut ones, ask for silo/cistern trailer reflective tape, they are precut pieces.
Sweet thanks so much! Thanks for watching GDB!
Why didn’t you drop the jockey wheel? I understand it wouldn’t wind down but you could have undone the clamp and dropped it??
I think the main issue is caravans / trailers aren't meant to do the speeds I've seen some drivers going at. The speed limit when towing is 60mph on a motorway, but I've seen many drivers towing in excess of 70mph
It depends mostly on how they load the interiors, for the trip.
If light loaded at the front, with heavier items at the rear, it "floats" the back axle of the towing vehicle, meaning that it has way too much of it's own weight on the steering wheels, which makes steering all that much harder (and slower to react to anything, thus it slowly sets up a "hunting" sensation, where the a'RRR's of the trailer tries to pass the front of the tow vehicle, 1st on one side then the other, until it escalates into a full-blown twisty-twist, with the trailer heading one way and dragging the tow vehicle to other way, whereupon (even as it's going back) the driver gives the steering wheel a tug to control it, thus causing more violent sideways yaw - until the trailer is becoming so violent it lifts the inside tires as it yanks the tow vehicle around.
It's on it's last legs when that occurs aming for total roll-over, unless.
Unless the driver hits the gas, straightening out the combo, to then apply the trailer service brakes and NOT those of the tow vehicle, keeping the trailer dead weighted behind, until the driver gets the speed well below about 45mph.
Most people do the exact opposite and hit the tow vehicle brakes, stopping the ability to steer, and causing a massive out of control roll-over.
Oh sure, they slow it down, as it rips it all apart. sliding along on it's side or roof or whatever, until everything arrives at 0 speed.
However, if they load the caravan heavily at the front, it weighs down on the tow-ball so hard it LIFTS the front of the tow vehicle so high, as to float it's front end, lifting the steer wheels off the deck, which also (more rapidly) means that the driver loses all steering as well as the ability to slow the combination.
It then takes off as if on a sprinted race to wherever, and wherever races up to turn it all over asap
It matters not one iota how off centered any load is, or how out of service any trailer has been left to rot away, a 1st gear crawl, can get it to it's final destination "intact" / albeit several days late. Unlike a fast tow, which will most likely flip the combo before the 1st corner.
Some nice lights on the merc 💪💪
Come fit them then 🙈 Thanks for watching GDB!
@gdbrescuerecovery don't need to! I'm saying I like the set up!!!
Greg. You've just proved you are one One of The Angels... Well done. Bob (Weston super Mare)
Caravan lack of maitanance, should be a mot for caravans, lorry trailers have to be inspected yearly.Ive lost count of the number of caravans lve had the misfortune to be behind and there lights don't work properlyl
Loving the Merc and the way the channels going Greg. Top work! Memories of the bike tow trucks, CF Recovery up in the North East used to have these which were often seen on the A1 Newcastle Western By Pass. Wonder if anyone still uses them?
Thanks so much appreciate it, just thought id give it one last push and see where we get too! It helps when Shane does my one video per week with the special effects better editing and proper camera lens, ah really? I cant say ive ever seen one working around here! Thanks for watching GDB! P.S Probably a thing of the past now!
were they not three wheelers?
Once the bed is sorted that sla has got to be a keeper, so versatile particularly with the spec.
Your not wrong she is a keeper certainly has way better earning potentials! Thanks for watching GDB!
Is it only me but does anyone else agree that that Caravan should have an MOT type inspection? Two obvious defects plus how many more!
Unlikely to happen since they even relaxed the towing laws.
110% yes i agree!
Very concerned at seeing so many people on carriageway and not the other side of the barrier protected 😮.
18K 🎉🎉 congrats! Nice one perfect angle for this job. 👌
Thanksss mannnnn appreciate you watching the channel from over seas 👏🏻
Nice Job Greg & Tash!
Text book recovery mate haha. That caravan shouldn’t be on road no break away cable jockey wheel fecked and not checking nuts that’s supposed to be checked and torqued before Every journey. As a caravanner myself it’s basic maintainance
If i see a recover vehicle on the motorway, I always try and give at least a full lane space unless the speed is lowe. I do the same with emergency vehicles.
Good to see a local lad doing well on CZcams, nice one Greg 👊
Very good job make it look easy 👏
Text book ;) Thanks for watching GDB!
Wicked video Greg tash makes a good camera lady and them angles are good. Has well
Certainly helps more angles the better eh! Thanks for watching GDB!
Its easy saying, but as a ex hgv class 1 driver, i used to apply the same checks on my caravan id check again wheel nuts/bolts when stopping in services for fuel .. better safe than sorry. That could have been alot worse. Im glad the family were safe afterwards...
5:30
Don't you just love the ?
Can't maintain it, lets go on a faraway trip, as what can happen eh?
We don't maintain anything - so it can't fall off as there's nothing to stop it.
No spare wheel, Jockey Wheel doesn't work, something else doesn't either, next they'll say it never passed it'a WOF, it ain't registered and oh yeah, we nicked it.
About time caravans and trailers require an annual MOT. I have seen som real wrecks being towed at motorway speeds
No thanks the driver is responsible for what is being towed keep it that way.
people forget that all that weight is on two wheels, so twice the loading of a car wheel, so be sure to check your nuts regularly, nice + tight...
always carry a towball with the built-in pin, click towball onto caravan, winch cable onto the pin, time is precious in the danger zone... keep it up young man
Nice method that never really thought of that! But may certainly try that on a future job!
Sounds good to me!!
Appreciate the comment as always 👏🏻
Thanks for watching GDB!
@@GDBRescueandrecovery aye, got to keep these young'uns reet
@@paulriggers1558 😂😂😂😂😂
Going to be fun
Did the customer check the torque of the wheel nuts before the startof his journey?
Good stuff bud no what you mean about back mines gone as well years of moving fairground bud
Ahh sorry to see, i feel your pain! No words to describe it really and some people will never understand! Take Care thanks for watching GDB!
That angle is a winner
Oh yeahh! Thanks for watching GDB!
You need blue lights and sirens like Ronn Platt on his recovery trucks in America when attending emergency calls
There is no UK legislation for this. Not even allowed Reds 🥺
Makes me jealous af lol. Some provinces in Canada you are allowed red some you are allowed blue. Must automatically shut off when truck is moving. Not allowed either here in Ontario. Did work for one guy who had rear facing reds and we never got trouble for them but they were illegal.
@@deanroberts187look at what he’s wearing you think he cares about legislation 😂 😂
Ive seen his channel he’s obviously the man! But damn videos are way to long for me 😂
So the jockey wheel doesn't work and the wheelbolts worked loose - not tightened before the journey? Not clever, I wonder if it has been serviced ?
You need to understand the principle of how a jocky wheel works.
Just lower it using the clamp forget about the winder.
What was the reasoning behind not utilising the ball hitch please or is it an Alko one?
Each to there own but I find flashing ambers better than blinding work lights to warn others approaching from the rear
your mum looks good in glasses ,my black jack is 2 tone it kills me so heavy .
👍
Tash always at the rear 😂😂😂❤
you missed out the comma after her name, +the word "please" at the end of the sentence
thats one thing i would hate to do recovery on a motorway especially with no hard shoulder and those nutters on the motorway that do not pay attention , and i am in Stoke thanks for the video
When strapping on the O/S on a smart motorway even with a lane closure if highways are in attendance ask one of them to stand at the back of the recovery and act as a spotter while you work. Always think of safest practice when recovering on a motorway. Also always cross strap backwards with a caravan. Strapping forward only won’t stop the caravan coming off the deck sideways in the event of an emergency stop. Sorry not quite textbook.
i call them wheel bolts not nuts:p😊
Im about to start recvery driver job next week😅
I am in hospital tonight whiching your vlog
Trusted Mercedes earning her keep well already 👌
Greg, the mallet has ball bearings inside.
Hi interesting job i was just wondering why do you not use four wheel skids when a wheel has come off and could also go under the jocky wheel would make the job so much quicker and saver just a thought good recovery though and you went far and beyond to help them out
Greg that hammer is called a deadblow hammer or mallet btw just to let you know
2 questions Greg. Why not use the jack that has casters as a slide? And why were they looking for a hotel? The caravan has beds in it! That's what it was made for.
I was pleased to see that the wheel falling off didn't cause a major incident. They were able to pull over to the left and stop in one piece.
'ey up Greg
definitely keep the merc Greg it's worth it's weight being lower
Shes a keeper for sure! Thanks for watching GDB!
You should get a control arm skate. Thank me later. Wicked for broken ball joints and trailers missing wheels providing they haven't dragged it till the ubolts are gone. Gives extra height for clearance when dragging them on
I will have a look! Thanks for watching GDB!
@@GDBRescueandrecovery you're welcome. Yeah, it's not a tool I use every day but definately worth the occupied space in the toolbox when I use it. Lessens the potential for damage to a customers car. Missing wheels and broken ball joints are still a pain because you have to jack it up to get the skate under it, but it's definately much gentler on the car or trailer. A tip though is you will need to put a plastic skate or slippy as you call them, in front of the control arm skate to form a ramp when it transitions onto the deck of the truck from the road, or it will catch and start to tip it over as you winch it over the edge.
Can I ask why you didn't check if spare wheel av 35:32 ailable in front locker and make sure gas turned off disconected or carry spare wheel although at end you got wheel back
Bet you fitted with 2 studs to get off back and bet that jockey wheel worked too might not have lifted van but was roling if had been put up
But guy obviously didn't check took wrench settings
whens the GDB recovery bike coming then 😎🤣 27:50
Not really a biker tbh 😂 Thanks for watching GDB!
18k need to change the stickers now😎😎
What is that light you are useing?
The motor bike trailer looked unsafe as hell BRAKES NO POWER
U should be in films m8 your first 1 could be called how to make a job last and last and last, flipping hek I've got an headache watching u perform I've got to go and have a lye down .😘
27:43 - what’s the bit about the Polo being hitched up on Peter’s trailer in the middle of this rescue for ?!
I thought the golden rule when you break down on a motorway was that ALL personnel stand behind the crash barrier unless involved in the recovery. Perhaps it does not apply on SMART motorways?
Why don't you have dolley skates on your rig?
27:26 I’d like to know what that tow bar is for on the back of his toe truck. There I was thinking it’s there to attach a caravan or trailer. That’s before starting to strap the caravan down.
Why wasnt anyone stood behind the barrier?
Maybe invest in a couple of DOLLY wheels??
How did it loose all the wheel bolts? Not tightened correctly?
That's usually what happens. Sometimes they are overtightened and fail too. I've towed probably a hundred trailers missing wheels and most common failure is the grease in the hub dries up due to neglect and the bearing fails and the hub and wheel separate. Boat trailers are probably most common for wheel offs because they are in and out of the water and the grease gets water in it. people never grease the hub if they have fittings or repack the hubs regularly when they don't have a grease fitting. They have money for a nice boat but don't have $35 for a grease gun.
LIKE-COMMENT-SHARE-SUBSCRIBE appeared 7 times during video, not really what I want to see , apart from that I enjoyed it…… and I have subscribed
Why not use the spray foam that they use in houses ,that wl do the job
If you had the wheel why didn’t you take a couple of bolts off the other wheel so it would mobile to get it on the recovery truck
How can you and highways allow so many people to be on the wrong side of the crash barrier? It's there to help people. They work trust me I've me them😢.
dead blow mallet!
It’s easier to spell easier this way👍
Highways probably got the lanes shut with red for the next 2 gantries after the breakdown so you won’t have to worry 😮
Thanks for watching GDB!
Why didnt you lift front of the caravan up by the Hitch as u was Pulling it up.
Your a Tyre a Guy , why didn't you take back to your Place to fix in the Morning?..Strange 🤔
1. Because i couldnt lift it? 2. Because i dont offer Garage facilities. Thanks for watching GDB!
have a look, the threads were stripped out of the hub/drum [46:04]

@@paulriggers1558 yesssss ,Take it back to his and Repair it the foĺlowing day
@@deenunya7735he would rather take full wack money off old age pensioners, I also hope he gets a summons through the post and points on his licence for driving a vehicle with no seat belt on as he removed it a good 300 yards or more before he pulled up
When are you going to get the livery done on the Merc? Also some new shiney beacons 🚨
Why didn't you get the body slid up under as far as it could go,whinch in and body out equals less travel and faffing about.but hey good job anyway especially in those conditions
At 13:04 it says there’s no mot for caravans or car trailers. And in brackets. ( should be really ) how do you mot a caravan or a car trailer. As both are not motorised vehicles. Both are pulled behind a motor vehicle. It’s the driver that needs to be educated. Or even fined should this happen on the motorway. At the end of the day it’s the drivers responsibility to make sure that they have a secure load. That should include checking the brakes on any caravan or trailer. It’s not that difficult to do. As caravans and huge car trailers have brakes anyway. It’s not that difficult to have your caravan on a slight gradient. Check the brakes while hitching it up to the car. While moving the caravan pull back on the hitch. And the brakes should operate and stop the caravan. After all the tow hitch is connected up to a series of steel rods that in turn are connected to the caravan brakes.
Why did you go into Lane 1 when you were nowhere near where you needed to be? Not from the UK, and we don't have motorways, so i don't know.
This is called a live lane breakdown
It gets better and better doesn’t know the names of the tools he’s using but wants to review stuff for Milwaukee 😂😂😂
Looks like the wrong wheel. Centre bores too big, probably why it came off
Another caraven gets a lift
Begins with S & finishes with T, but it ain't "SMART".
There's really nothing smart about these stupid smart motorways. Every one is a deathtrap now.
That's a dead blow hammer is the other name yous wer thinking on
Why no spare? Idiots..poor caravan. When we had ours my boyfriend always checked tyres and nuts before we went travelling. He even took wheels off to ckeck brake shoes were ok.They didnt deserve to have one if they didnt look after it
For me it was a good job but you going back and forth it get what you needed was a bit of a joke should have got it all after you got the jack and then too tie your strap on the caravan why not just fold it back and put under the Handel on the ratchet? That’s how I do all my straps but like a say good job
They closed the second lane after the incident, I see this far too frequently where they close lanes afterwards and not before. Very dumb system, all human input / actioned.
Don’t you mean dumb motorway?
Do you really need to be filming on the side of a motorway? I understand uploading to CZcams and just having a GoPro on you, but I think recording on your phone for instagram and having somebody else record you is a bit unnecessary. Any one of them truck drivers could look over at their phone and plow through the lot of you, so you don’t really want to be messing around for content
Less talking more work.
Wicked video Greg tash makes a good camera lady and them angles are good. Has well
