There is a huge amount of local history around this episode. Ireland had won the Eurovision several years in a row and it was becoming incredible expensive (the winners each year are the hosts the following year) for the Irish television service RTE to produce. So it was rumored that we started purposefully entering rubbish bands and songs to ensure we couldn't win. This episode was a tribute that those times. :)

the back story is that Ireland had several successes in Song for Europe at the time and it was costing them too much money to stage the event (winners host the next event in their own country), this was alluded to this episode and that is why they chose My Lovely Horse, so it would lose.

It was 3 times in a row - ‘92, ‘93 and ‘94. Then they had a rest in ‘95 when they came 14th before winning again in ‘96. But that’s still a good track record. Their ‘94 entry was Rock And Roll Kids, sung by two geezers in their late middle age. A lot of people thought it was awful and the rumour started that they deliberately chose them in order to lose on purpose. But they still won!
John Lydon has put himself forward as a contender for Ireland this year. I don’t know how well he’s done or if he’s still in the running. Personally I don’t think the song shouts ‘winner’ but since it’s Johnny Rotten they may win again this year.

The winners (country) of the annual Eurovision song contest are obliged to _host_ the big razzamattaz all night, competition final the next year.
In the 1990s, Ireland kept winning the competition consecutively, and so Ireland got to host seemingly EVERY year. The Eurovision Final is a LIVE broadcast to over 30 countries (?) and costs a fortune in tech and satellite fees alone, before adding in the whole VIP experience for the nobs and dignitaries from nearly every country imaginable (except the USA!).
Anyway, hosting doesn't generate a profit, it's just a prestige thing. The joke of this episode is that the Irish cynically wanted to deliberately lose the competition to spare themselves the enormous expense to what is a small GDP country.
Ordinarily the Irish public would phone in votes for their favourite contending song, but the presenters said that _this_ year (1996), that they themselves would choose the winner, picking Ted & Dougal's abyssmal effort because it was 100% certain to lose the final, and relieve Ireland of any further financial burden.

Do 'My Lovely Dog' and the challenge is 'an original tune/song played on a badly tuned guitar or only has 3 strings' and 10 line lyrics why you love your dog. Or an instrument you have never played. And the singing has to be monotonous. A challenge for everyone on this channel to take part in the challenge and submit entries here. But the lyrics your case might be an another pet or some random things like favourite mug, kitchen utensil or furniture. Short, bad lyric monotonous tune contest. Father Dick Byrne was breaking Eurovision rules, maximum of 6 people on stage in an act...maybe he was disqualified on that technicality

Absolutely loved this reaction, esp your queen was making up a song for you and could hardly breath for laughing. Not entirely sure how they got The Divine Comedy to voice over the song in the dream sequence - but I guess as he wrote the main theme. Mind you, the words on the version of the song used for main theme released by The Divine Comedy are… more than a little bit odd.

The songs co-writers was Neil Hannon. In fairness, getting ‘when your arse is the size of a small country’ into a song is pretty impressive:

You should do a reaction to the Eurovision Song Contest. It's madder than a crazy sitcom can do justice to.
Epic Sax Guy for starters. Or the Russian grannies. Poland's entry featuring milk maids...

I remember years ago my grandmother gave us a DVD of 2 episodes from a newspaper (she wasn't a fan) and it included this episode which we all watched a thousand times until we were a little older and bought the Complete Boxset. The other episode on the DVD was one that King Boomer wasn't seen yet, so in the interest of not spoiling anything, I'll just say this...
