I switched from using Mobil 1 for decades in my cars to using Pennzoil Ultra Platinum after watching Project Farm’s video testing here on CZcams. Nice to see this analysis too.
@@lobbyrobby By what he, Project Farm did, is tell me that Penz Ultra is close to Ams oil without the price. Use it in all the cars I take care of for friends and family
@@socalltd Switched from Mobil 1 to Ultra Platinum two years ago. Ultra Platinum has a very good additive package. My ‘17 Camry and ‘19 CX-5 have never run better.
@@ChicagoRob2 couldn’t agree more. I wish more people knew of the changing industry. I hear most people say that Mobil 1 is the best oil despite not being able to give any facts.
MY LIFE STORY OF ENGINE OIL... My first car was a old 1998 Honda accord and I use Valvoline simply because the name sounded nice lol 😆 😅 and the price was reasonable 😅... Never had issue with it. Then I switch to more expensive Royal Purple because it again sounded nice and the color of the oil I'm like WHAAAAT... I was young OK... My second car was a old 2000 Toyota Celica with the Manual Transmission. My first Manual transmission car and the first Manual I learn from. The car had a bad oil burning issue and I had to constantly check the oil level every week to top off, but other then the oil burning the engine actually runs fine mechanically. During this time I use the cheapest brand I could find because I was topping off the oil level constantly every week and was cutting into my wallet, so I went cheap. My third car was a 2006 Toyota 4runner with the 4.7 V8. This time I did my research and did a lot of asking around and most people told me go with Mobil 1 and that it was the best. So I use Mobil 1 on my 4runner for 4 years. I usually do oil change around 4,000 to 5,000 mile mark. But the issue with with Mobil 1 was that when ever I reach that 4,000 to 5,000 mark I feel my engine feeling sluggish and each time I do a oil change I always tell myself "I sure love new oil because the engine just feels so good each time I get new oil" For the longest time I thought that was normal. Then as I got older and got more busy with life I decided to take my 4runner to the shop for oil change instead of doing it myself like I did in the past. I went to the closes location which was Firestone and I notice that they use Pennzoil. Up to that point I've notice Pennzoil but I never use it before so I decided to go went with it. The first time using Pennzoil when I hit that 4,000 to 5,000 miles mark my engine didn't feel sluggish and that suprise me alot. Because with Mobil 1 when ever I get to that 4,000 to 5,000 mark my engine would always feel sluggish but not with Pennzoil. I was really shock because up to that point I thought it was just a normal thing. So I did another round of Pennzoil and again the engine didn't feel sluggish with the Pennzoil when I hit that 4,000-5,000 mile mark. So on the next oil change I went back to Mobil 1 just to see if I'm tripping or not and sure enough once I hit that 4,000 to 5,000 mile mark my engine felt sluggish again with Mobil 1. So ever since then I made the switch to Pennzoil and it have been 4 years of me using Pennzoil. Since then I've brought a Tundra and Pennzoil is all I use for that Tundra. Pennzoil is my brand of choice and I've been using it for 4 years now. And that's my experience with engine oil, literally hands on life experience.
I'm happy to see that the oil I picked from day one for my wife's car was a good decision. My truck loves Pennzoil as well. You're the second person to prove how good that oil truly is. Thanks for the work and time!
When I switched to using pennzoil platinum in my Camry a couple years ago I noticed that the valve train rattle on startup went away within a few hundred miles of driving. Anecdotal perhaps, but also real results.
Always appreciate your content Rich. I used to religiously only use Mobil 1 myself but having a vehicle that took 7 qts of oil, it got quite expensive even doing it myself and thinking only the best for my vehicle because of marketing. Ford Tech Mackuloco (BSG Automotive) recommends only Pennzoil Platinum Ultra Full Synthetic himself.
Look at the video he did on the opened up ford engine in the truck....it was a mobil 1 engine....looked great....clean..no wear on that cam cap he had.....he was saying changing oil on time is the main thing...
Thank for providing objective test results for high-end synthetic oils and how such information should be interpreted when making oil choice decisions. You've done a nice job of testing a variety of oil brands as well. Your Royal Purple testing and observations should be interesting as well...
Mobil 1 has its popularity because of nascar and advertisements. Its a decent oil but i dont see where it does anything different then any oil you change at proper intervals. Proper intervals is the key with any oil i feel
I think one big takeaway here is the difference in filtration between k&n and fram. The lower filtration and hence more dirt will cause higher wear numbers. I think the comparison would’ve been more scientific if the same filter was used for the same interval.
I’ve used Mobil 1 extended performance oil and filters since early 2000’s. I’ve had good results with one vehicle purchased new in 2004 running great with almost zero oil consumption (10K mile oci) until and trans issue took it off the road last year with 208,000 on it. With all that said I’m impressed with the performance numbers and filter construction of the premium Pennzoil products. I will be switching over as I use up my reserves of Mobil 1. Thanks for the quality content. I try to make informed decisions based on solid data and these videos are very helpful.
If it's working for you send out a sample and see what you get back and then send out a sample of Pennzoil Platinum Ultra and see what you get back compare that
I really enjoyed this. I religiously used Mobil 1 when I had a bmw e46. Mostly because it was the most accessible oil that came in 0W-40. Currently have a 2006 Tacoma with 204k miles and have been using pennzoil platinum. Oil changed every 3k miles. Engine runs flawlessly and is quiet. Haven’t thought of changing brands but I’m interested to see what others you test out!
It's ridiculous to change a synthetic oil that often. One year or 10,000 miles easy. I change mine once a year and my truck has 300,000 miles. when I used regular oil when I was younger i change my hot rod 400 small block 69 Camaro every 5000 miles. It's a waste to do it more often.
@@VROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM Lol. 10k oci kills motors, its been shown first hand from mechanics who usually recommend 5k synthetic changes. 5k for synthetic, 3k for regular Change oil when its dirty and burnt, Id bet at 5k it is
Thanks for the report. Honestly been in the industry for around 10 years. Always used mobile one and recommended it. But with that being said I use Pennzoil platinum now. For the price it’s hard to beat. Looking forward to the royal purple stats in the future.
The low filtration capability of the K & N type of filter was the biggest reason I never recommended any aftermarket filter kits for the Cummins/Ram's when asked by customers.
thank you SO much for these objective analyses of oil/filters, etc. I have a 2021 Subaru Forester with 3 years and only 22,000 miles on it. I am switching to the Penn Platinum ultra based on your suggestions. $23 and change for 5 qts at Amazon right now
I have about 20 gallons of Pennzoil Platinum in my basement, bought out a Pep Boys' entire stock when they were liquidating their retail store's inventory. $16 per 5qt jug! Been good to my S550 Mustang GT so far.
I am curious to see how full synthetic Quaker state holds up... from what I know it has a pretty good additive package in it as well... High moly oil for one.. keep up the testing .. I find this utmost fascinating and interesting.. Love the vids you post..Nothing but honesty and transparency :)
Quaker State makes a good oil. They're owned by Royal Dutch Shell who also owns Penzoil. I have used Quaker State whenever it's on sale at Walmart or other stores. I've also used Shell Rotella and liked that a lot too. But the key is regular oil changes at 5,000 miles. I've done that and have over 300k miles on two cars without issue.
Love eco beast engines and I believe it’s important to not only change the oil regularly, but use an oil like penzoil platinum to keep the turbos running top notch
The best most affordable synthetic oil that I've tested so far is going to be Valvoline Advanced and Valvoline extended protection for the regular oils right next to Pennzoil Platinum Ultra these are the top three regular affordable oils The very best oil that I've tested so far is Red Line the red bottle Esther bass oil and second to the best when money is not an issue would be sSchafer Supreme 9,000
Great results Rich. This is why I've always used Pennzoil UP in all my vehicles. I currently us UP in my '20 Lariat 3.5 EB as well with a Motorcraft oil filter. I may need to switch the oil filter to a Fram our Purolator One oil filter. Any recommendations on oil filters for the 3.5 EB?
I think Mobil 1s popularity is due to two factors. Mobil 1 is heavily advertised on TV and can be easily found. I see Mobil 1 all over. Most every gas station/convenience store carries it. The membership stores (BJs,. Sam's and Costco) and Walmart offer it at good prices. Mobil 1 was used and recommended by Porsche in the air cooled 911 engines. I'm looking forward to the report on Royal Purple.
1997 4runner at 212K I put new valve cover gaskets on. Mobil 1 from new, 5K oil changes. It looked new. No wear on the lobes. Maybe that's why Mobil 1 is popular, because it works.
Right every one uses the engine different. My old 06 3.7 jeep builds up condensation crap. I don't like the gunk under the cap in winter so always change it at 3k. In the Summer I don't see that nasty crap as much. I've tried having it on for atleast 40 mins. Have it warm up then 25min runs to work but no difference.
@@jimmy1life Make sure to change out your PCV valve.. I think the best thing is to get in the car, start it, check the dash for any lights that say bad things, set the things you want on, and leave... Sitting in the driveway warming it up is not always a good thing.. The sooner you get moving, the sooner the engine with a load on it now, warms up, and the oil temperature takes the longest to warm up to the best temp for it to flow, etc... BMW "M" cars have an oil temp gauge that will not allow you to rev the motor until the oil temperature is at the right degree so that it is flowing to all the parts at their specified pressure..
@@davidberkey1041 yup it does work well. I’ve used in my Odyssey with 10-13k oil change intervals and the used oil analysis from Blackstone always came back perfect.
Thanks for the info Rich. I use Pennzoil Ultra Platinum with the Fram Ultra Synthetic filter in my 2020 Mazda CX-5 Signature. It has the turbo. My OCI's to date have been about every 2500 miles as most of my driving is short trips. This information confirms to me that I have made the right choice with my oil and filter. Keep up the great work!
Love the comparison. I personally love Valvoline (Napa brand oil). Never had problems using there oil & there oil filters or ford filters & oil. How’s your Lincoln running on the Royal purple?
Do you know where this 3,000 mile oil change intervals came from? I was reading an owners manual online for a 1965 Mustang and it recommended 6,000 mile oil changes as long as the recommended oil and filters are also used. I’m beginning to think oil hasn’t come as far in engineering as they claim.
The lab results have seemed to show that Pennzoil Ultra Platinum Castrol Edge GTX are the BEST of the shelf Synthetic oils. A high end FRAM or Wix filter will do. I personally use Amsoil Signature Series and there 25k filter. In reality Amsoil XL is the sweet spot. Right up there with Pennzoil Ultra Platinum , and Castrol Edge GTX . Same price of you have the discount to.
On the subject of sending stuff out to labs... Do you have any thoughts on sending injectors out to have them professionally cleaned and tested before/after? Would your answer change if the vehicle in question was from a municipal fleet that might be getting lowest-bid gasoline that might lack cleaners/additives? Sent out some injectors once from a 15-year-old CVPI with 120,000 miles and when they came back after cleaning/testing the car seemed a lot more responsive. Wasn't all that expensive, either.
Interesting. I always use the platinum ultra in my 1.6 eco boost escape. I change it every 5-6 months even though its always way under mileage, mainly cause it gets driven on a a lot of shorter trips to work. I can't ever find it anywhere like Walmart in stock and don't want to pay the parts store prices so I just get it off Amazon. And an OEM Mototrcraft filter. I did have an open ended K&N filter for a while that fits surprisingly well in the factory airbox. Sounded cool when you'd start the car and could hear the blow off and turbo some but it got annoying during everyday driving on the road after awhile so I went back to the OEM Motorcraft. Those air filters always crack me up, they look like something from my shop vac.
@@MrFart451 Autozone doesn’t carry the Ultra Platinum line, and they will not order it for you. I live near a flagship store and have discussed this with the general manager at length - autozone corporate doesn’t think Ultra Platinum sells enough or has enough interest for them to carry it.
I can confirm that using Mobil 1 in my 3.5 Ecoboost SHO makes the engine ticking sound much louder. I know the high pressure fuel pump makes a lot of noise, but using Mobil 1 just makes the engine tick like crazy. Almost sounds kind of like the cam lobes are hitting the buckets with no oil in between at all (even though I've never heard this actually happening, I would imagine it would sound like this if no oil situation ever happened) 😂 I'm sure Mobil 1 didn't cause more wear than other oils. There's a lot more ticking sound with Mobil 1 in all engines I've used Mobil 1 in. You're not the only one that noticed that, It seems that most people think Mobil 1 is loud in their engines. So far, Amsoil and Pennzoil Platinum has been the best with engine noise reduction. With Amsoil, my engines are so so much quieter when I listen to the engine with the hood open, and the noise difference is also noticeable in the cabin. Its amazing how an oil can change the way an engine sounds, even though the oils are the same viscosity, just different brands.
@@pbaker7160 Wrong. I worked in a fast change lube shop and all oils were stored in the same ambient temp. Certain brands were noticeably thinner than others. (same viscosity ratings) I've switch my own and found a significant sound difference.
I just recently made the switch from Mobil 1 5w20 Annual Protection to Pennzoil Platinum, and immediately noticed how much thicker the Pennzoil was right out of the bottle. My 4.6L Triton seems to like it, so I will be sticking with it provided they keep the formula the same.
@@johnsmith3735 Thicker is not good at all. The whole point of these newer oils is that they have to be thin to lubricate modern engine designs properly.

I have also watched Project farm championship episodes and upon the verdict I've decided to switch from Mobil 1 to Pennzoil Ultra Platinum on all my vehicles including on my procharged Vette. Right under amsoil you can't beat that and also the price is right for Pennzoil Ultra. Thaks Boss for the lab reports and also on the info on the Oil filters.
Thanks for the thorough testing and information. I have a question. I’m buying a new 2022 super duty with the 7.3 L v-8. Well ok two questions. How many miles before first oil change and should I use a different oil than what I will be using normally? I will be towing with this truck. How many miles before I start towing? Thanks for your videos.
Few years ago I had a 09 police vic and ran Shell rotella gas truck 5W20 and it ran poorly with no acceleration But once I put Mobil 1 truck/Suv 5W20 it ran like butter !!!
Thanks for the video and info. Didn’t know if I missed it but have you done an oil comparison with Castrol edge full synthetic, just wondering thanks again for your videos.
In my 2006 Acura TSX mobil 1 is a bit noisy particularly on cold start up right after the oil passes 2000 miles ish in service. Initially I got a bit paranoid but using it for 5 years i just decided to live with it. Since i don't need to add oil during the 5000 mile OCI consistently and I recently pulled the valve cover to check valve lash and change gasket, the valve train was clean with no varnish.
I'd like to post a note to folks who like to say "I've used such and such oil 20 years ago in my high performance hot rod toaster, and it worked the best hands down. Not that I tried any other oil, but it was definitely the best!" Oil formulations change fairly significantly over time, even if the branding doesn't. We are now at API SP and ILSAC GF-6 standard with modern oils. The standard in 2000 was SJ, which had significantly different requirements for viscosity, additives and detergents than SP. Base oils have also changed slightly in that timeframe. The reason this testing is useful is because the 3 year old youtube videos doing a similar thing, are now obsolete. SN, which was current pre-2020 and SP have a fairly large difference in requirements. There isn't much for the halfway SN plus and SP though. As a service advisor, I would regularly run into conversations of motor oil brand bias, using examples from the early 1980s. To which I would simply ignore the other party, or just stare blankly. Old men come in two flavors: Those that know a whole lot, and those that think they know a whole lot. Don't be the second old man.
Absolutely agree When I was on the phone tonight with a MMO engineer we spoke about stuff like this Today's oils are nothing like they were 20yrs ago and completely different
Correct! I remember many years ago when Pennzoil was what we used in our gasoline tractors and push mowers because it was cheap and good enough for those low RPM motors. Today it's and one of the best. I use it in my F150 and also my Grand Marq with 162,000 miles that still purrs like a kitten
Yes, I try to tell the sheeps that oil formulations change every few years and the Pennzoil Platinum Ultra vs Amsoil SS test is no long applicable as it has already gone through at least x1 reformulation. New testing is required for comparison. The sheeps don’t listen and just believe what they already made their mind up with rather than actual updated data. One thing is certain is that despite reformulation, Amsoil is always top 3 oil
@@LoveLikeaHurricane The last time Project Farm tested these synthetic oils, the top three were, in order, Amsoil Signature, Red Line, Pennzoil Ultra Platinum.
Rich, did you do a flush after or add anything in the crankcase between oil runs? Copper is likely carryover or from your fumoto drain valve when you sweep it open. Sodium can be an additive or coolant. Total Base Number and Total Acid Number are two to watch for longer OCIs. Overall, the oil looks good and the engine is wearing nicely.
@@FordBossMe you’re correct on how you’re sampling. I just didn’t know where or how you sampled and thought that might have been where that trace copper came in. No coolant losses and sodium being up is why I mentioned any pour in additives or cleaners between. Could be part of their ingredients in that mix. All in all, it’s a healthy vehicle for sure. Silicon should drop off more the next few changes with that Fram Ultra oil filter. Looking forward to the next report for sure.

I've been running my k&N in my 2015 Nissan frontier... Sounds like I need to change back to OE? Or just find a quality cold air intake? I use Pennzoil platinum with wix every 3k miles want to make the engine last long as possible

Would a typical Ford dealership doing an oil change on a car/truck sample the oil when draining it (if I give them the sample collection bottle)? Or is that something you’ve seen at your shop?
I been using pennzoil platinum high mileage for almost a year and I love it , is it any closer to the ultra ?? Or far from comparison ?? Thanks again for your time filming this video 👍🏼
Hi, thank you for all the good information. I have a new truck with the GM 5.3 V8. I do standard driving. No towing or off roaming. What 0W20 synthetic oil and filter would you use? Change schedule?
Great video. You're providing useful data. Yes, you can argue that it is anecdotal, however, you're continuing to test and show us the results. People can take it or leave it. I find it valuable. Keep it up!
Do you think switching back and forth a high mileage oil additive to pennzoil ultra will be detrimental to the seal and cause a leak? I've been running mobil 1 high mileage for years. Heard it's better to just stick with it than switch. Any truth to that?
I've tried 3 of popular oils. M1, Pennzoil Platinum Ultra and Castrol Edge (all 0W-20 with Purolator Boss) on my 2015 Honda Pilot. For me, the Castrol Edge is the smoothest but my Toyota runs very smooth on M1 (I never did a oil testing though). Pennzoil is very hard to get, almost need to special order for lot of $$$.
I have always used Mobil in everything I’ve changed the oil in and after watching a lot of your videos I decided to try the pennzoil platinum ultra in my daily (2018 Ford Fusion Hybrid 150K) and wow the difference is crazy car runs smoother starts smoother and after 5k miles the oil is still clean compared to the Mobil would be dark by now.
😅Dark is not trash in the oil. Dark is an addative used to indicate heat cycling so that you can visually see the oil life change. If you were purely driving 70 mph interstates continuously the oil would stay "clean" looking.
Is Pennzoil ultra good for older vehicles? Or just I stay with regular platinum ? I have 08 Lexus GS 350 with 124mi ? Any insight would be appreciate it 🙌🏼 any update on Amsoil you mentioned you going to share updates which is better mobile 1 or pennzoil or Amsoil ?
Thanks for verifying that I'm using the best of the cheaper synthetics in my vehicle( I consider Pennzoil Ultra Platinum the 2nd best overall oil only 2nd by a little to Amsoil from all the research I've done) Not that I like it but Amsoil is the best but it is so expensive and if you change your oil every 5K like I do it just feels like I'm throwing money away. However, I'm going to put Amsoil Signature series in my Grand Marquis next oil change just to run it one time and see if I notice anything different. I know my Grand Marquis gets 29MPG on the freeway traveling at 79mph as I've tested it multiple times. Will try it in my Tundra too which I've been changing oil every 5K even though the guy with the Million mile Tundra states "maintenance" is key and that he changed his oil every 10,000 miles.....He's on his 2nd Tundra and it has 704,000 mile on the 5.7 Iforce now. I really think Toyota copied aspects of Ford's 4.6 but that's my opinion.
Toyota has a 4.6L too. It is in the LS 460. It would probably be more similar to the DOHC cobra engine. The 3.5L and 5.7L are similar. I also have a Grand Marquis. I always use pp. ON a flat highway I can get 29 -30 on the display if I drive 60 and easy. I have the 2.79 rear.
@@alb12345672 If you are on a freeway where you can do it try increasing your speed and I bet you'll still get that MPG or maybe just a little less. I checked it with my display and also calculated it manually to make sure. Some people can't believe I'm getting that MPG from a V-8.
One thing I would of liked to of seen is VOA's of all oils that your trying for a base to compare from. From memory some PUP lines have a tendency to pull copper out of things - oil coolers/heat exchangers etc. Base silicon levels etc need to be known before comparing one oil to another. Cheers
More testing requires more money and unless more subscribers come on or people are going to start jumping on the Discord I'm not putting any more money into things that I have to sew start encouraging people to join the patreon or something because everything that you guys wants cost additional money
In my opinion it's just a gimmick. Is there any evidence anywhere that suggests it's better than any other common off the shelf oil? I have seen oil testing that had this oil as middle of the road when it came to wear protection. This tells me the only things special about it is color and smell which does nothing to prevent wear.
There is the value issue that needs addressed too. Amzoil is about $14 per quart while Mobil 1 is about $6 per quart, both 100% synthetic oils. At what point do folks eliminate value for the best product vs. most value in performance for the cost?
Amsoil is 100% synthetic Mobil is not 100% synthetic It has to say 100% on the bottle and mobil does not It's a marketing gimmick by mobil and most oil companies - Amsoil is the the only real full synthetic that's why the bottle is labeled 100% and mobil just says full synthetic
@@FordBossMe Would you say Pennzoil is equivalent to 100% synthetic because it is made from natural gas ,not crude oil ? Thamks in advance for your thoughts
I switched to Pennzoil Ultra Platinum after Project Farm's test. The 5qt (1.25gal) was on Amz in 2020, for $21.99, free shipping. Bought two. Should have bought more as this was likely a seller typo, and FBA. Now the same 1.25 gal product (5W-30), is $64.99 from that same seller. And good luck finding this oil locally. Wally World doesn't sell it. Advance, and AutoZone don't carry it either. Good video.
I use PUP 5w30 in my 18 Subaru WRX wrx with great results. Have since the car was new on its very first oil change. Now at 102k miles. I used to buy it locally special ordered for like 75 bucks and i think that was for 6 quarts until i started to use amazon. The thing with amazon is the prices on that oil change drastically from time to time. Sometimes its $50 sometimes its 60 and sometimes its 65 for a 3 pack of 5 quart bottles. I just ordered some at the last price. You have to find it when its down and stock up then. Been doing this since about 2019. Keep an open eye and be willing to spend the $ when available at the lower prices.
I was a little let down that the results weren't comparable. If both oils had been run with a standard filter, then we could know which differences were from oil formulation. But as it stands, once again it has been shown that gauze filters don't filter as thoroughly as oem style paper filters. No new ground broken here.. Thank you for the video and I do enjoy your content.
I don't understand how you guys want anything more than what I've given you it's like you guys want other people to give you the content and then they give it to you and then people still find reasons to complain about it I'm the one paying for everything none of you guys are offering the extra help to pay for this stuff it's on me but yet you want more and want more and want more

Any good quality API approved oil and good quality filter are adequate for most consumers. Changed regularly, it should protect your engine and not void your warranty. Come to think of it, can you even buy oil in the US that is NOT API approved? A looong time ago you could actually buy recycled oil (NOT API approved).
@@BrianBourgeois- I had no idea that was still available. I haven't been in a dollar store (99 cents store by me) in years, when I was I didn't look at the oil. Thanks
After years of checking oil debates, it seems to be the Penzoil platinum series is a better oil. I personally been using Mobile products for many years without any issues. I had the same oil tests on my 2012 wrangler after a couple years of extended oil changes and the results were good. I’m sticking with Mobile beings it’s been good all while acknowledging the results of Penzoil. I tore apart an 05 5.3 with 250 sum odd miles due to a cracked head that had run conventional Penzoil straight 30w and it was clean with no signs of wear. I did suggest getting away from the straight weight and run the recommended weight. I suggested Penzoil platinum being its of high quality and her husband is a Penzoil guy. Routine maintenance based on your driving is by far what’s most important when keeping things running good for a long time
Rich what's your personal opinion on KN Engine oil filters? A mechanic once told me that he didn't recommend KN engine air filter but the KN engine oil filters were OK. I dislike the fact that KN does not disclose their micron rating on thier oil filters. I called KN about a year ago and ask them about thier engine oil filter micron rating and KN told me they don't disclose that information 🤔. Maybe cause they know the micron rating horrible??
This is great info I still don't undertand the long life oils like mercedes 15k. But there engines are not blowing up under normal use. I like penzoil and yes even i have to order online and get the extra quart! for now im doing it at the dealer as the ground clearance is low. They get bulk oil!

I seen on Amazon they have Penzoil ultra? Does not say platinum and label is black with some hyper clean writing, wondering if that's the same pup formula or a new one?
Man I hope I get the notification for the Royal Purple test. Because once I replace rear main seal and they had to change oil pan gasket as well and valve and manifold gasket. I went straight to royal purple. I don't know if it was lighter or what but I used same grade factory says. 5w/30. Oil light came on every time I stopped or at idle. Took a long trip three hours. And back. Light haven't came on since. Any ideas why that happen? Once it's time again I may use royal purple one more time. I just wanted to use good stuff being now no more oil leaks. So far she runs alot better and smoother than before. Or maybe it's cause I fixed oil leaks and replaced the gaskets. But yeah
@@FordBossMe or maybe being royal purple is a cleaner as well. I lost oil pressure from oil cleaner. But its been running fine since. Which is why i was saying. I'll use it one more time. I've only used it once I knew it was time to replace gaskets. Slow the leaks. Which it did work until I could fix it.
I have seen multiple videos of fram ultra filters being cut open with excess glue on the filter and can, wouldn't it be bad for this to mix with the oil and get into the engine

But the issue with with Mobil 1 was that when ever I reach that 4,000 to 5,000 mark I feel my engine feeling sluggish and each time I do a oil change I always tell myself "I sure love new oil because the engine just feels so good each time I get new oil"
For the longest time I thought that was normal.
What type of oil were you running before?
@@matthewkim983 I got the car used, so I don't know what they were running in it before. I assume whatever the express lube place uses.

Mobile 1 is garbage. More engine noise and evaporates more than other oils I have used.
I think one big takeaway here is the difference in filtration between k&n and fram. The lower filtration and hence more dirt will cause higher wear numbers. I think the comparison would’ve been more scientific if the same filter was used for the same interval.
There are later comparisons where this has been done
Mobil, Fram, Stp oil are the worst I've seen so far

Thanks, this just confirms why I use Pennzoil Ultra on all my oil changes for the last 2 years.

That truck will run forever
It's ridiculous to change a synthetic oil that often. One year or 10,000 miles easy. I change mine once a year and my truck has 300,000 miles. when I used regular oil when I was younger i change my hot rod 400 small block 69 Camaro every 5000 miles. It's a waste to do it more often.

Quaker State makes a good oil. They're owned by Royal Dutch Shell who also owns Penzoil. I have used Quaker State whenever it's on sale at Walmart or other stores.

I've never really thought about that to be honest with you
Interesting.
You know autozone price matches?
K&N air filters let more dirt into your engine. I’m glad you decided to go back to OEM to be honest.
@@MrFart451 Autozone doesn’t carry the Ultra Platinum line, and they will not order it for you. I live near a flagship store and have discussed this with the general manager at length - autozone corporate doesn’t think Ultra Platinum sells enough or has enough interest for them to carry it.
Cooll! Pennz synthetic oil & fram ultra filter is all i use on the Gas cars & been running for years.
I can confirm that using Mobil 1 in my 3.5 Ecoboost SHO makes the engine ticking sound much louder. I know the high pressure fuel pump makes a lot of noise, but using Mobil 1 just makes the engine tick like crazy. Almost sounds kind of like the cam lobes are hitting the buckets with no oil in between at all (even though I've never heard this actually happening, I would imagine it would sound like this if no oil situation ever happened) 😂
I'm sure Mobil 1 didn't cause more wear than other oils.
Unless you're using a different viscosity there is no difference in oil weight and the ticking is something you're conjuring in your head.
@@pbaker7160
Wrong. I worked in a fast change lube shop and all oils were stored in the same ambient temp. Certain brands were noticeably thinner than others. (same viscosity ratings)
I've switch my own and found a significant sound difference.
Thanks for the videos and your honest feedback👍. I use Pennzoil Ultra myself.
Thicker is not always better. 90% of engine wear comes from startup which means flow rate is extremely important. That's where mobile shines
@@johnsmith3735 Thicker is not good at all. The whole point of these newer oils is that they have to be thin to lubricate modern engine designs properly.

Same for my Acura MDX
My 2003 4.6 Liter Ford calls for 5W-20. Does your Lincoln call for 5W-30 or is there some other reason you are using it?
Absolutely agree
When I was on the phone tonight with a MMO engineer we spoke about stuff like this
Today's oils are nothing like they were 20yrs ago and completely different
I don't pull my oil from there for my samples
This motor doesn't lose Coolant
It comes through the dipstick for samples
And when you pull your sample even when you use the valve you don't pull right away if you did from the bottom so that wouldn't be it either

This time I did my research and did a lot of asking around and most people told me go with Mobil 1 and that it was the best.
So I use Mobil 1 on my 4runner for 4 years.
I usually do oil change around 4,000 to 5,000 mile mark.
What do you think of a video on Prolong? Have had such great success with it over the years, Has really helped my lifter tick on my 06 2500 Chevy.
Prolong?
For where I live in Ontario Canada pennzoil ultra platinum very rarely goes on sale while it seems like Mobil 1 is on sale every other week. Always make sure to buy an extra jug or 2 of ultra platinum when it is. I do find it funny when people say it’s all the same though
I couple months ago I picked up some jugs of ultra platinum from Amazon for $33 CAD. Canadian tire can be hit or miss with Pennzoil ultra platinum products.
I was a Valvoline guy for a long time one day I switched to Castrol and my car picked up a lifter tick the next day. Since then I switch brands frequently since the detergent package varies, never had a problem since.
Valvoline good oil and castrol oil. U had problems with castrol oil??
I've been running my k&N in my 2015 Nissan frontier... Sounds like I need to change back to OE? Or just find a quality cold air intake? I use Pennzoil platinum with wix every 3k miles want to make the engine last long as possible
I would
@@FordBossMe I'll switch back then didn't know it was that much worse for filtering
@@quintonrichardson4506 look up the project farm air filter comparison video. K&N filters are terrible for daily driver vehicles.
How does having all these variables, different mileage, different filters, result in an accurate comparison?
I usually run marvel mystery oil with Castrol edge high mileage, it would be interesting as an oil test
Was this K&N filter new? And I think you should do the air filter comparison with the same oil back to back just to confirm it's not impurities in the oil itself... Goes without saying, same oil filter as well. But interesting to know how much extra K&N let's in or not. I use one, so I kinda want to know.
I will and yes
Would a typical Ford dealership doing an oil change on a car/truck sample the oil when draining it (if I give them the sample collection bottle)? Or is that something you’ve seen at your shop?
They would
I been using pennzoil platinum high mileage for almost a year and I love it , is it any closer to the ultra ?? Or far from comparison ?? Thanks again for your time filming this video 👍🏼
Ultra has a higher additive package
Hi, thank you for all the good information. I have a new truck with the GM 5.3 V8. I do standard driving. No towing or off roaming. What 0W20 synthetic oil and filter would you use? Change schedule?
5k max and any name brand oil and quality filter that is rated dexos approved
GM uses 5w30 oils.
Ehhh should be no problem
Im telling you, people are asleep on it
😅Dark is not trash in the oil.
It's fine for older vehicles
Yeah it seems that Pennzoil Ultra Plantium is better then the Amsoil XL. The ultra platinum is also almost half the price of the amsoil XL.
Did you do a Marvel Mystery Oil or any type of engine cleaning oil additive after the Pennzoil or was that longer ago?
I went straight to Aimsoil
And I ready to send that sample out
Then used aimsoil flush to flush my engine and now currently using royal purple
I'll just run Platinum in my car then switch drop
Penn. 5w 30 is not wss-m2c961-a1 ford approved, would you still use it on 2.0 ecoboost or better off with castrol edge ?
You're going to have to use your best judgement on that
One thing I would of liked to of seen is VOA's of all oils that your trying for a base to compare from.
I am curious about the royal purple oil. I been told its more for racing applications.
In my opinion it's just a gimmick. Is there any evidence anywhere that suggests it's better than any other common off the shelf oil? I have seen oil testing that had this oil as middle of the road when it came to wear protection. This tells me the only things special about it is color and smell which does nothing to prevent wear.
@@Deucealive75 I haven't tried it because it's more expensive than mobil one.
RP has inferior cold-flow properties compared to Penn UP.
There is the value issue that needs addressed too. Amzoil is about $14 per quart while Mobil 1 is about $6 per quart, both 100% synthetic oils. At what point do folks eliminate value for the best product vs. most value in performance for the cost?
Amsoil is 100% synthetic
Mobil is not 100% synthetic
It has to say 100% on the bottle and mobil does not
It's a marketing gimmick by mobil and most oil companies - Amsoil is the the only real full synthetic that's why the bottle is labeled 100% and mobil just says full synthetic
I stock up on Pennzoil UP 0w-20. I had so much it will last me for years. I try to use up within 3-4 years at most.
I'll run it again for all the people crying about the damn thing
I don't understand how you guys want anything more than what I've given you it's like you guys want other people to give you the content and then they give it to you and then people still find reasons to complain about it I'm the one paying for everything none of you guys are offering the extra help to pay for this stuff it's on me but yet you want more and want more and want more
@@FordBossMe Sorry not meant as a criticism, perhaps it came across as such, unfortunately. I'm not complaining, nor expecting you to rerun your tests.
I enjoy your logical thorough approach to all things automotive. As always this was very interesting and it seems that penzoil and mobile one are common, affordable, oils that people have to choose between.
I really meant the thank you for your videos and I do enjoy your content.

@@FordBossMe I hope that you feel better soon. I would think that this is a challenging platform to deal with, especially when you are not at your peak and as they say, everyone is a critic. The less qualified, the more critical..
Many of the dollar store oils are not api approved and if you read the bottle it will say not for automotive applications.
@@BrianBourgeois- I had no idea that was still available. I haven't been in a dollar store (99 cents store by me) in years, when I was I didn't look at the oil. Thanks
Any good oil will work fine
I put Penzoil in my Durango with the 5.7,big difference my 5.7 loved it....
Would love to see OEM branded oils.
i switched from mobil1 10 years ago... love pennzoil. 3 toyotas and 3 sleds i run it in.
Routine maintenance based on your driving is by far what’s most important when keeping things running good for a long time
Hey man, was this Pennzoil Ultra Platinum the SP version? I think the SP is meant to have more boron
Idk
Rich what's your personal opinion on KN Engine oil filters? A mechanic once told me that he didn't recommend KN engine air filter but the KN engine oil filters were OK. I dislike the fact that KN does not disclose their micron rating on thier oil filters. I called KN about a year ago and ask them about thier engine oil filter micron rating and KN told me they don't disclose that information 🤔. Maybe cause they know the micron rating horrible??
I think they have good oil filter cans but everything inside is pretty standard nothing special
This is great info I still don't undertand the long life oils like mercedes 15k. But there engines are not blowing up under normal use. I like penzoil and yes even i have to order online and get the extra quart! for now im doing it at the dealer as the ground clearance is low. They get bulk oil!
Nice video do u recommend penzoil uitra for crv 17 turbocharged? Thnaks
I sure would
From castrol i tried penzoil ultra for my CRV turbocharged. after 1000 km maintenance minder showing 80 % ,but oil still color brown. Do u have any idea whats going? Thanks
I use only PUP in my 5.7 Hemi with 8 ounces of lubegard biotech to give a moly boost. Truck is 2013 and runs like new. If you have a hemi, pup and biotech is one of best combos you can do, many have cured the hemi tick this way. Wife has a 2014 Gmc Terrain 2.4, the biotech helps protect the timing chain, common issue they go bad. In my Turbo car I use euro formula Castrol. In my Camaro ss I have used only mobile 1 EP but may change now.
I seen on Amazon they have Penzoil ultra? Does not say platinum and label is black with some hyper clean writing, wondering if that's the same pup formula or a new one?
K&N air filters tend to cause your mass airflow sensor to get polluted from the oil applied to the filter element.
Your doing it wrong if it caused your mass airflow sensor to clog
I switched from Mobil 1 I used for years and switched to Pennzoil Platinum and noticed a difference in engine smoothness and performance!
I wish more people would
@@FordBossMe I’m thinkin’ they might and have seen a lot going with Pennzoil lately!
But yeah
Yeah I don't know why unless it has something to do with the repair that was done
@@FordBossMe or maybe being royal purple is a cleaner as well. I lost oil pressure from oil cleaner. But its been running fine since. Which is why i was saying. I'll use it one more time. After that I'll use something different. Oh yeah being i have new gaskets. I read and seen where I shouldnt use high mileage oil. It will ruin brand new gaskets. I would like to hear your take. I've only used it once I knew it was time to replace gaskets. Slow the leaks. Which it did work until I could fix it.
I have seen multiple videos of fram ultra filters being cut open with excess glue on the filter and can, wouldn't it be bad for this to mix with the oil and get into the engine

Marvel Mystery Oil is by far my favorite and it's the only system that hasn't been changed in a hundred years because they were grandfathered in before the EPA so they have that naphthenic Base
