The whole chairman rose thing is bizarre, because the plot would totally work if they just... took out the millenia. Say that the energy crisis is already here, and that they've been covering up the problems it has been causing, and they will run out of power in just a handful of years. Suddenly, his character makes sense.
Yeah, he no longer looks like an insane old guy who can't wait even a second. Then it's "Oh I was trying to prevent the energy crisis from getting worst and things got out of hand" And it makes sense! Does it make Leons character look worst sense he's putting the championship battle before the crisis? Yes, but I'd say that would make you want to beat him more.
@@masked_undead539 also makes the blackouts and quakes all the more serious. As instead of them just being glossed over and chalked up to Rose fucking around, they're instead symptoms of the impending crisis. Like if they just put in five more minutes of thought into the story, it could've been better.
But that also would have meant he would have been a sympathetic villain, who actually has a reason for the things he does. Can't have THAT in a kids game! Just where would this world end up, if the ten year olds of the world actually learned, that the world isn't black and white.
It gets even dumber considering the world they are in. In our world that would be a problem, there world have creatures that can power an entire city by just tickling them. They dont need to go into lovecraft color out of space stuff to get electricity in there world.
@@Tatokat A villain doesn't have to by sympathetic to be relatable. Chairman Rose could have been relatable by wanting to fix an energy crisis but non-sympathetic by him being willing to sacrifice the immediate wellbeing of countless people and Eternatus itself.
Hop is the quintessential second child. And it's actually really tragic that we don't really get to flesh out his character but I really do feel like he's the best rival we've had in a long time.
The game glosses over it (because it's pretty clearly an incomplete game, but w/e) but Hop sees a ton of pretty classic parental neglect. Like, none of his mom's or his grandmother's dialogue talks about him. There are only pictures of Leon on the shelves and walls.
He's got big shoes to fill and his personality is pretty consumed by trying to disappoint everyone by not being the Champion at age 10 like older brother was.
AT AGE TEN.
After losing to Bede he starts literally showing signs of clinical depression and we can't do anything about it other than worsen it by STOMPING HIM AGAIN.
We kind of just crushed his hopes and dreams to the point that he _fucking quit and decided to be a Professor instead_ and we don't really get to talk about it at all. Because the story's over.
Seriously. He owns 33% of the Legendaries in the region (kind of sad for another reason) and he fucking quit being a trainer because we beat his ass over and over again.
You know who Leon gave a Charmander to? Not his fucking younger brother.
He probably _could_ beat his older brother by the time we meet him last! BUT WE'LL NEVER KNOW. Because this depressed child got steamrolled over and over by life. Probably would have become the champion if it weren't for the fact that he was the unlucky bastard that happened to do his Gym challenge the one year all of the sweaty overachievers like you, Marnie, and Bede decided to compete.
Having a sad backstory does not equal a good character

Micky S alright so let me tell you about the rivals you missed in between Black and White 2 and Sword and Shield.
X/Y- Shauna, Tierno, Serena/Calem, and some other “rival” (I forgot his name.) All of them are friendly, but you barely battle Shauna, Tierno, and the other rival. Serena and Calem are also friendly but fight you from time to time. Shauna, Tierno, and the other rival are honestly just bad, while Serena/Calem are just ok.
Sun/Moon/Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon- Hau and Gladion. In my opinion, they are both great rivals with lots of development, and are big improvements from X and Y. Hau is a friendly rival while Gladion kind of is and kind of isn’t. What I mean by that is that Gladion isn’t really nice to you, but you become friends overtime

What I expected: Hau
What I got: a 10 year old boy rethinking his life choices, going through depression, wondering whether he is good enough, all while I destroy everything he ever loves with my overleveled team.
That yamask evolution had to be a prank by Gamefreak. No way they expected a kid to have a Yamask on their team, battle a wild Pokemon in Dusty Bowl with it, rush back to the Pokemon Center after taking at least 49 hp of damage without fainting and accidentally pass under that one specific arc
I think they know by now the game will be data-mined and there are a dozen videos day of release that show exactly what to do. Kids know how to google, so they made it annoying instead.
I mean there's probably some lore or something involving celtic snakes and the British countryside but STILL. I purposefully sought out Yamask once I realised it was in the game and had NO clue what to do in the slightest.
AND *YET* THE PLANNED GEN 4 AZURE FLUTE EVENT WAS GONNA BE "TOO DIFFICULT TO FIGURE OUT"

Personally, I like to think that the reason that Hop will always pick the starter that gives him a type disadvantage is for the power move of beating the crap out of you with a pokemon that is weak to you. And then he's shocked that you're aware that water will put fire out.

This is actually a common (but not as commonly granted) accessibility request for videogames!
Other normally requested accessibility features include subtitles/CC, blind mode/color filters, controls customization, phobia-related options (like drowining animations or less scary spiders), dyslexia-friendly fonts, to mention a few.

I went from hating hop and thinking he was annoying to being so sad when I took away his hopes and dreams of becoming champion.
I continue to think he's annoying to this date. Maybe because I'm a naturally competitive person who sees going all out as a sign of respect, and don't see it fit to feel bad for rivals.
I think hop was pretty annoying, but in my opinion he’s the almost realistic 12 year old kid as a Pokémon rival, exited but queit annoying. I also like how the game shines light on hop for character, but the ending of is just kinda bland (not gonna spoil)

I was trying to be as nice as possible to hop from the beginning BC he was really nice and he wasn’t mean like half of the other rivals,but when I found out he was depressed from me beating him every single time he challenges me made me have a soft spot for him and feel bad for him 🥲✋✨

The ridiculous thing with Piers is in B&W2 they had a gym leader, Roxie, who was also a singer and in the overworld you’d hear her sing/spell Pokémon. No reason for Piers to not have any form of simulated singing nor any music.

Honestly for one of these rival characters, i want it to at least feel like like he is trying to beat you
Like, have him fill out his party early game, have him change what pokemon he challenges you with based on who was in your party the last time you fought, have it so that his pokemon level roughly matches the level of your pokemon because he was grinding that tall grass same as you
I want the rival to feel like a challenge who is keeping up with you every step of the way
One thing that would be really nice is that if you lost to him, the game didnt have you retry the fight but the game just kept moving

@@CallMeVidd Nemona was a good mix of competitive rivals from the older gens and rivals that are just basically your friends from the newer ones. She’s your friend but she also wants to destroy you. She really likes battling you, but doesn’t have an existential crisis like Hop when she doesn’t win, cause you’re challenging her and she absolutely loves that.

Ok but hear me out, Leon is the embodiment of a 5-year-old beating the elite 4 with a full team of legendaries thinking “I’m so good at pokémon!” after barely beating the champion using a full team of level 88 legendaries
Leon is that person who shows up to the battle spot with a full (probably hacked) shiny legendary team and loses 3 - 0
oddly specific but i would say being undefeated would make someone cocky and arrogant. Sometimes i myself get caught up in the moment and can be like "get fucked!" or if i dominate my friend in pokemon (because im a nerd who spend way to much of my childhood to the point i can name any pokemon if i see it) "haha you cant beat me"

I am a Hop defender. Not because he is a good rival, he is kinda annoying, but I think he has the best character development out of any rival. Most rivals just disappear after you fight them for the last time, but he takes his final defeat and makes something of himself (working in the lab). I liked that. But I will still admit that he is annoying.

i will literally never get over the fact that game freak couldnt even be bothered to put an animated cutscene during the talk between rose and leon. they gave us a slideshow to explain ALL of rose's motives and intentions. AND THEY DIDNT EVEN DO A GOOD JOB.

frogcupcakes Animation literally means to bring something to life... the difference would be a dynamic more emotional or whatever storytelling instead of a slideshow(and i dont thing they do slideshows so often these days in Games)
@frogcupcakes Licht Mond also said this, but animation makes the scene more emotional, immersive, and (arguably most importantly) entertaining. animation would also enable the audience to get a read on these characters through their body language and expressions. it gives the viewer something to look at beyond words on a screen (and a still image). imagine if the scene in SUMO where the mc and lillie play the flutes was a slideshow as well? it's a jarring change in story-telling, and (for such an expensive game and profitable franchise) it's cheap and lazy. when i think of cutscenes, i think of unique camera angles, dynamic expressions and body language.
if we had gotten to actually *see* leon struggling and hesitating to keep up with rose's far-out thinking, and if we could *see* rose being unhinged rather than some uncomfortable amalgam of crazy and composed (which can be done correctly, but i don't think is done [if at all] in swsh. most of the blame can fall on the game's overall incredibly weak storyline and writing) then it adds to the immersion and tension of the game. slideshows can be done incredibly well (such as in the introduction to Undertale), but i dont think they suit (supposedly) climactic scenes like the one where it's used in SWSH. especially not in a 3-D game where cutscenes are used elsewhere throughout.
I'd say they did a great job with the slideshow but it would have been better if they just animated it
@frogcupcakes I agree that It wouldnt be that big of a change considering how laughable this game's plot is but its still such a lack of effort and its just so utterly nonsensical since the game has been using animated cutscenes for literaly every other moment

I thought the clothes gimmick was a pointless add-on in gen 6, but yet there I was in gen 8, spending every last penny I had in that final town of Sword and Shield to make myself look as bad a bitch as possible.

The only time I was angry at the game was when bede beat the shit out of hop, because Im the only one allowed to bully hop.

I just realised an hour into watching this for probably the third time that Leon is meant to be an adult. For some reason I thought he was like 15. He just has the vibes.

The same thing happened to me and my Sobble. I messed up. After it evolved I shoved it in a box so it can’t torture my eyes anymore. It sits there to this day.

I know we all like to make fun of the character motivations for Rose, and honestly I think it is warranted, but his actions get a lot creepier if you look at them as manipulation tactics. Like, why the hell would he be reacting to a problem that won't rise up until 1000 years later? Because if the "great Chairman Rose" was able to stop the Darkest Day from ever happening while he is in office, he would be regarded as a hero for centuries to come. It was never about the people of Galar, he was just a slimy and manipulative billionaire who only cared about his self-image.
The reason he interrupted the Champion battle? Because just the day before, Leon disobeyed him. Leon told Rose that they could wait until AFTER the battle even though Rose wanted to do it right then and there. And the entire time throughout the game Rose has this persona of innocence while at the same time talking down to the characters like they're stupid children that are in way over their heads. He blames Leon for not following him, he blames the overheating reactor on us because we just "wouldn't listen to reason". He abuses Leon, the player, Bede, and even Oleana. Rose is an absolute creep, and I will die on this hill.
Or maybe I'm just giving the writers way too much credit on this, but hey it's food for thought.

Just to clearify, Hopp caught Zamazenta (Shield dog) first try, with a poke ball, without weakening it, because Zamazenta let Hopp catch him as a thank you for Hopp helping him when he was forced to Dynamax.
The fact that Hop beat every Gym leader first try and constantly talks about winning despite losing every single battle with the player, made me have a headcanon that Hop is just going easy on you when you fight
