Until 1867 immigrants from Poland to Chicago could only attend Mass in the two German parishes but through the efforts of thirty Polish families who formed a society under the patronage of St. Stanislaus Kostka, the seeds were planted for the first Polish Parish in Chicago.
The Society purchased four lots of land for $1,700.00 on what was once farmland where wild ducks and rabbits were hunted.
The first church, a wooden structure, 40 by 50 feet, was built in 1869. The ground floor was built to be the school and meeting hall while the second floor was the church and had seating for a thousand people. The church’s bell tower was 85 feet high and from it the priests watched the famous Chicago fire in 1871 until it burned their new church as well.
The church we see today was finished in 1881. It is constructed of yellow brick with limestone accents. It measures 200 ft (61 m) in length and 80 ft (24 m) in width, with seating for 1,500.
St. Stanislaus Kostka school was founded in 1874. By the late 19th century, the school had 3,000 students. A fire destroyed the school and convent in 1906 but rebuilt in only two years by which enrollment increased to 4500 making it the largest elementary school in the U.S.
In the 1950s, plans for the Northwest (now Kennedy) Expressway would cut right through the parish property. However, due to protests by the Polish community, the path of the expressway was altered and the church was saved.
Much restoration has occurred over the last two decades including the stained glass and murals. Hopefully the south tower, which was struck by lightning in 1964, will one day be restored as well.
The church’s soup kitchen serves hundreds of needy people every Monday through Thursday. St. Stan’s as it is called by parishioners, is the only Catholic church in Chicago that is open 24/7. It also has mass in English, Polish and Spanish.
Try and visit this beautiful architectural gem if you’re in the Chicago area.

My mother attended grammar school nearby at St. John Cantius Church on Carpenter. When she and her classmates graduated, they went to St. Stanislaus Kostka to attend a one-year secretarial school where they were taught typing, shorthand, filing and other office skills. This was about 1920.
