Once the free money began flowing, they began increasing prices for tuition, room and board at a much higher rate than inflation.

Colleges and sometimes parents are largely to blame. These 18 year olds are told by everyone that they need to go to college and are assured that they can get a good job afterwards. There are "advisors" who help them pick classes and so forth, but half the time they are no help at all. I had a friend who was in the masters program with me and as it turns out, no one told him he had to major in a hard science to get into dental school, so he majored in history and minored in chemistry. After he graduated he discovered that he needed a science major for dental school, so he was forced to get a master's in chemistry just to get in. An advisor didn't give him good advice, and as a result he was forced to spend two extra years in college and waste about $22 k (our college did not waive tuition for masters degrees as some do). One of my old professors told us he didn't know that you don't need a master's degree before going into a PhD program, so he ended up getting a master's and a PhD because of that oversight. A lot of people I know are first generation college students, so parents have no idea how to navigate college choices, etc with their children. When I started teaching college I made it a point to explain career options in my field (chemistry) so they would know what's out there and what they have to do to get there. I think the colleges keep this information vague on purpose. Ultimately they're a business, and if they keep students there longer, profits increase.

There's a good reason for that: "The Sociology of Environmental Communications" means absolutely nothing and everything. For example two people chatting to each other falls under that umbrella as does a person talking to a pot plant. A completely non-specific and arbitrary endeavour that characterises exactly the future these people are likely to have.
The formal specification is: "Environmental communication is a practical discipline that enables understanding of complex environmental issues and strengthens the role of individuals and organizations in environmental governance (and the Lady in the video is studying the sociology of that)" - so in effect generating endless amounts of regulations and red-tape in non-sensical documents from persons who do not understand basic Logic, Science and Math is what that amounts to and the Lady is studying the social impact of that.
Let me assist: The State where I live has 250,000 Public Employees (mostly of this ilk) and yet spent 2.5 Billion dollars last year in consultancy fees because they collectively don't have a clue. Meanwhile people wonder why the West is in rapid decline.

While students need to be more responsible and have a plan where that degree takes them, (not because they just "like" them) I also hold the universities responsible. Get rid of these "create your own degrees". Each year, the universities need to do a study on how well their degrees serve in their student’s future. Connect with students and ask whether they are having a difficult time finding a job with that degree. If so, that should be the university's responsibility. Do a thorough study of the payouts of these jobs and compare them to the cost of the degree. If a number of students graduated with a degree that didn't lead them anywhere in the work force or costs so much that a job in that field is not going to cover the student's expenses, that degree needs to get pulled from the University.
If students want to take courses in the pulled majors/minors (for fun, interest, or just advancing their knowledge), that is fine but one, the students pay for it and two, there should not be an entire degree that focuses on them.
