Just wanted to say thanks! Had a neighbor with a Deere X720 that did something very similar. Came across your video and decided I would take a crack at it for him. Sure enough, rubber hose on the fuel pump was split down the middle. Got it fixed for him for $5 bucks. Knocked out a good deed, and he thinks I am an ace mechanic. Thanks for putting this information out there. Really saved an elderly man a lot of money over taking it to John Deere and paying them for the repair. I suspect they would have replaced the whole fuel pump unit, plus labor. Keep doing what you are doing!
My fathers x485 -620 hours had the same issues for several years , after warming up engine miss ,would idle but no power . Followed your videos fixes, but engine miss remained. The cure for my 92 year old fathers x485 was valve lash clearance. I think the valves had slightly recessed, there by decreasing Valve clearance, motor would heat up -valve length expand just enough to keep valve from seating properly and the engine miss once again. Opened up valve clearance several thousands of an inch. After chasing engine miss several years this fixed our engine miss. Remove valve covers, roll engine over to point were rocker arms are loose and check/adjust valve clearance. Amen
Thanks you did a great job showing us how to do that. It didn't look to easy to me because i'm 88 years old but I now know how to do it, that's the main thing. God Bless You
I purchased an X485 at an auction and when I got it home, she was running rough after about 30-60 minutes of mowing. I first watched your video about the tune up kit and bought one tuned it up. I still had problems and was ready to take it back to the auction to sell it but I figured let me check your channel and I watched this video and decided to check out the fuel pump and I found the exact problem with the pump being separated from the hose, except I did not find a gas can cap. I replaced the hose and clamps and she purrs like a kitten. Your video not only saved me money but now I get to keep the tractor because its a great one. Your videos are perfect. Next I am following your video to service the mower deck. Thanks again
Hi Ed! Your video is still helping today! 8/10/18. Ended up buying the whole new fuel assembly. The pump was not running at all. I did not get to your other vid showing the very tiny fuel strainer at the pump. My pump was clogged and obviously failed. Thanks for doing the videos. I can make my 485 last a lot longer. With these, this will be regular maintenance more frequent now on. Purchased summer 2003 and still going. Same deck and 3 acres every two weeks. Thx! -Terry
I have a 1996 John Deere 445 that I just used this video to repair, today! I replaced the 4 inch piece, I had so much fuel hose leftover, i just replaced the entire line. Thanks for this video, man! Really helped me out! AFTER THIS FIX MY 1996 JD 445 RUNS LIKE BRAND NEW! ZERO CHANCE OF STALLING, NOW!
@@OmFishing Well, after about 2 acres of cutting it started surging again. Not as bad. And recovery time (cool down to start up again), is better. But I am still having issues after changing fuel filter, fuel line, fuel pump hose, complete tune up, using stabilizer gas ... could you suggest another fix? Sea Foam?
I Just Want To Say Thank You For Putting This On. We Have Spent Thousands Of Dollars Taking It To JOHN DEERE $125 An Hour. They Put A New Wiring Harness On It Last Time. I Decided To Check If It Was The Same As Yours. It Was A Splitting Image Of Yours. The Hose Was Not Connected. After A New Hose Put It Back Together And Runs Like A Champ! Thank You Sir.
Great job sir! I loved how calm you were about the job and took it step by step! I learned a lot from watching your video! And even had a chuckle or two with the gas cap in the the tank. Over all you did a great job and saved a lot of money and probably did a better job too!
Thanks for the video, nice tractor well designed, but rarely come available for sale. The previous clamps on the hose out of the pump were pex clamps, worth looking into. They are becoming popular in new water install and work great.
Followed your instructions on my 445. The little hose was still attached but had a split in it. Got it all replaced and it works just great now. Thanks so much for your video. Save me a ton of money!
I experienced the same problem with my JD 425. The hose on the electric fuel pump had vibrated off . You could hear the pump splashing fuel in the tank. That is how I diagnosed the problem. The pump worked fine. I replaced the hose and installed new clamps.
i SO respect people who fix there own stuff !! great job , great video , thanks. probably saved yourself anywhere from 100 to 300 bucks depending on where you took it ? keep up the good work bud!
I had trouble with my john deere tractor running then stalling after 5 minutes we thought is was the fuel pump we changed it still did the same thing I put gum out with pea in the tank left it set over night still no fuel coming out of hose I jacked the back of the tractor up then all of a sudden the fuel started gushing out of hose well it fixed the problem thank GOD
Nailed it my friend. After a broken wire on the EFI temp sensor, and a governor adjustment, she purrs. $0 for parts! ... since I had fuel line and clamps laying around
Another excellent video, love the way you approach problems with machinery and also your outboard videos, always interesting and informative ,thankyou for your time and presentation.
Maybe it was running cause it was just bypassing the filter and sucking straight into the pump?? Might not have run at all if the fuel level got lower. Just guessing.
Don't know yet but, thanks for the information. My neighbor is having the same problem and I've been wanting to help her out because no one seems to be able to repair it. My turn I suppose. Hopefully you've just made my job easier. Thanks again.
Thanks for the info I also have a X485 and encountered a a surging issue and odd sound from the fuel pump , I performed the same operation as you and found the same issue. JD should have made a cradle to support the pump and used a non -worm gear and non- pinch hose clamp.
I have fixed this problem for my neighbor 2x now. The problem I have found is that using regular fuel line for this repair will make it fail in pretty short order. Most fuel line is not rated for being submerged in gas. The fuel line needs to meet the SAE 30 R10 standard. Most auto parts stores do not stock it, but can order it and have it in store in a day or two. The cost on it is about $20-$30 per foot, but it beats doing this job multiple times. I am about to tear into his for the 3rd time. Hopefully this will be the last.
glad you fixed your problem rather simply. You just gave me another reason not to buy a John Deere. By the way serging is many many times caused by the carburetor. Nice video. Thanks for not having obnoxious music.
Great Video, thanks, I need to tear into my 445 to hopefully find the same issue to my problem. Your X machine and my 445 look very similar in the fuel pump department. Thanks!
Thank you very much! I need to do fix the fuel line. Yet, I think I bought the L100. I plan to make the necessary repairs later this Spring. GOD Bless!!!
I’m having a similar issue with my John Deere gator. It will run for about 30 mins then start to loose power and eventually die. It’s not the same as this mower, but it might be a similar type issue. Thanks for the info!
I pulled the fuel pump and found the short in tank hose was bad. I was actually disconnected from fuel pump when I removed the assembly. Finding a new piece of fuel line was impossible on a Saturday. None of the parts stores in town had any that was rated for in tank. Ended up going to a motor sports shop where they work on ATVs , Snow machines, wave runners, and the like. They gave me a 4" piece that they said would be OK inside a fuel tank. It runs good now.
This sorta thing happened to my Power King tractor. It doesn't have a fuel pump in it, it's gravity fed, however, replaced the fuel line in it and included a fuel filter on the line, now she runs super good.
My Toro developed a fault where it would run for 45-60 mins then start bogging down. Next day it was fine for roughly the same time. Thought it was overheating or coil/diode breakdown but turned out to be an insect in the fuel tank ! Seems it was taking that long to settle to the bottom of the tank after refueling at the start of each session. Never would have believed it given how much the fuel sloshes around on my rough grass.
Trying to find stuff like that will make your head hurt. Thanks for sharing and commenting. That is what it is all about helping each other through the school of hard knocks.
Really good work. The clatter when you shut it off is not normal. You need to pull the valve cover off and adjust the valves before a pushrod falls out of the rocker. What it sounds like except you never said anything about hard starting. Might be something else loose.
My X530 is doing the same thing. It’ll run for a while and stop. It won’t crank. It it’ll turn over. Once it sits for a while it fires right back up. Make sense that the line could be broken or loose etc. When the fuel is sloshing the hose can’t get fuel but when the mower sits still and the fuel settles the hose touches just right again and fires up. The cycle continues I’ll take mine apart in a day or 2 and let you know of this was my issue also.
Very helpful video Ed, thanks! Good job! A very inexpensive fix, I am surprised this hose deteriorated so quickly with so few hours. Probably the crappy gasoline we are using. I know that ethanol is hard on rubber fuel system parts in automotive applications.
Probably should have used some submersable fuel hose. Being imersed in gas will breakdown the outside of standard fuel hose in no time. Just my 2 cents. Stuff is pretty expensive compared to standard fuel hose.
I had a smaller L110 JD with similar symptoms. The little tiny breather hole in the gas cap was plugged. Pushed a wire through it and the problem was gone.
The problem I found was that the gas got vapor locked, seems like the vent hole in the gas cap gets blocked for some reason or other, solution I found re drill thru the existing vent hole or replace the gas cap.
Good video and good of you to try to inform others on how to work on their own equipment. I am just wondering why it would only run for 30 mins with a broken fuel line as I would be inclined to think it wouldn't run hardly at all? I was thinking it might be a fuel pump overheating and shutting down from working hard getting fuel through a dirty filter sock.
angus gillingham I’m thinking that was the vent line. So fuel pump was sending fuel to the carb, through the solid line, but no make up air was getting back on. After some time, you have a vacuum in the tank and the pump can’t pump any more. Like holding your finger on the end of a straw full of water. Won’t flow until you release your finger.
@@neilscales good place to start would be to run it with the fuel cap off and see if it keeps running. If that’s not it, change or temporarily bypass the fuel filter. If that’s not it you could have blockage in the tank outlet or in a line. I suspect the fuel pump is OK if it starts and runs for 10 minutes or more. But you can check it by disconnecting the line and observing the flow while you crank it. Be safe working with fuel issues, please.
My x300 has a vented gas cap on the fender. The mower would run for about 20 minutes then stop. The gas cap vent hole in the top of the cap was plugged with dust, etc. causing a vacuum to form as the gas tank emptied. I unplugged the vent hole and the mower keeps running for hours.
Having problems with my X485 surging when warmed up and won't start when its hot. Suspect the same problem. Will be checking out my fuel pump too. $285 +tax for new pump at JD Ouch. They don't see just the pump for this model anymore it seams. Wonder if the pump for the X720, X724, X728, & X 729 (AM136612) will work. Its $115. Thanks for making the video.
I cant believe how over engineered these are. My 34 year old Craftsman GT briggs twin only costs $15 for carb & fuel pump rebuild kit. Why do they think a garden tractor needs a car style pump when a vacuum operated one will do the same job for many years for far less money?
16:29 nice idea those spring hose clamps normally loose a bit of tension over time. 17:18 when u was moving to shade tree thought u had seat on & was giving us a sample of a "low" rider, driver mower.
I've got an X740 John Deere it's got 256 hours on it. I run it mowing and after 20 minutes it just stops dies as I'm mowing the grass. So I will check it out thank you great video
I've had that same problem before too, where it would run for a while, then acted like it was running out of gas. It turned out to be the gas cap. There's a tiny breather hole on top of the cap that gets clogged, and creates a vacuum inside the tank. Took a piece of wire, and poked out the dirt in the hole,............problem solved.
If you fill the tank all the way full would it still shut off after running for a while my tractor is a John Deere 425 and it seems to shut off after 30 minutes of writing it and mowing with it let it cool down and it starts right back up
I heard somewhere that they make a hose called in tank gas hose for inside gas tanks and that you shouldn't use regular gas hose in the tank because the rubber on the outside of the hose will brake down from the gas in a short time. I believe this came from an auto mechanic on you tube. He said trust me or you will be replacing the hose again in a short time.
Running regular gas destroys those hoses. Use ethanol free to have the hoses last longer. I used to work 30 year old Cub Cadets with original fuel lines. Now they just fall apart.
I think we have all done that. Right when the knife slips and you look to see if it got you. Just when you think no blood it starts to pour. We grab the gas soaked rag and you know the rest. Thanks for watching and Stay Safe!!
Good find! I thought you would have replaced the return line hose as you had extra. It is strange that it ran for 30 minutes. That loose hose is unlikely to have cause that but perhaps it did. Check Gas cap fuel vent or just loosen the cap at 30 minutes and see if you can hear an air rush or if it continues to run.
I just started checking everything. When it had spark and still would not start I though fuel. If that was not it and I accidentally fixed it I will take dumb luck. And the fuel line guess i was not thinking clear when I found the other.
This hose should be submersible fuel line not standard fuel line. Submersible fuel line is designed to go inside fuel tanks it's expensive but will not degrade...
Thats ethanol fuel for you. Why they used regular fuel line in the tank is BEYOND ME. I would use a poly fuel line, not regular fuel line. In a few years, plan on doing that again.

Randy Ashcraft Try non ethanol gas first mind will do that with cheap gas.
I cant believe how over engineered these are. My 34 year old Craftsman GT briggs twin only costs $15 for carb & fuel pump rebuild kit. Why do they think a garden tractor needs a car style pump when a vacuum operated one will do the same job for many years for far less money?
joe ramirez oh thats why.
The yellow cap you found comes off of a Plastic Gas Can Spout. Someone dropped it in while Filling
Thanks that is what i thought it might be.
Thanks. Nice video. Guess I have to fix my tractor now.
Thanks for watching and Stay Safe!!
16:29 nice idea those spring hose clamps normally loose a bit of tension over time.
17:18 when u was moving to shade tree thought u had seat on & was giving us a sample of a "low" rider, driver mower.
You might be on to something. I have not seen one yet.
I've got an X740 John Deere it's got 256 hours on it. I run it mowing and after 20 minutes it just stops dies as I'm mowing the grass. So I will check it out thank you great video
Let me know if that is the problem with your please. Thanks for watching and Stay Safe.
Thanks for sharing your fix. I am sure there is a lot out there with the same problem. That is what it is all about helping each other.
If you fill the tank all the way full would it still shut off after running for a while my tractor is a John Deere 425 and it seems to shut off after 30 minutes of writing it and mowing with it let it cool down and it starts right back up
Well, that was a darn good fix...
Thank You for watching and commenting!
good find, good fix, stupid Deere construction/assembly practice!
6" Magnetic parts pan from Harbor Freight... (to hold those screws...) $3.99
We in the buss call that a lot of trash on the filter, never use a metal gas can unless you like water and trash in your fuel!
Thanks for the tip.
Had the same problem, thanks for the video!
Thanks for sharing that information. Keep watching and Stay Safe.
The yellow part you pulled from the tank was a cap for a gas can hose.
Thanks!! Keep watching and stay safe!!
Running regular gas destroys those hoses. Use ethanol free to have the hoses last longer. I used to work 30 year old Cub Cadets with original fuel lines. Now they just fall apart.
Thanks for the information that is what it's all about helping each other. Thanks for watching and stay safe!!
Was the new fuel line rated for submersion in the fuel. Big difference in the outer material and regular hose won't last too long in there.
Yes the fuel line I used was rated for submersion. That is why I had trouble finding it. I had to go to NAPA to get it.
Thanks you saved me on my X585
I am happy it help. Stay safe.
With that blade, I saw myself with a bloody, gas soaked rag wrapped around a bad to the bone gash going into the house looking for my last bandaid.
I think we have all done that. Right when the knife slips and you look to see if it got you. Just when you think no blood it starts to pour. We grab the gas soaked rag and you know the rest. Thanks for watching and Stay Safe!!
Do you have to have submersible hoses? There’s. Special hose for that that will not work.V
Get a air hose to that cap; blow any crap out of it and use Carb Cleaner on it too; a vapor lock equivalent is what may happen.
Thank you for explaing so well.
Happy to help. Keep watching my video's
Very interesting. Ghanks for that info.
Change the second gas line not just the clamps while you have it apart .
Hi there I’m having the same issue on my x320 why after 30 minutes? Mine is doing same thing. Thank you
nice fucking ring man. and thanks . not that great at working with engines more so the trades this helped a lot . appreciate you taking the time.
I wonder if the ethanol is eating the rubber? They make a submersible type fuel line that won’t break down like that. I think it’s blue in color.
When I bought the new fuel line NAPA said that this fuel line was submersible fuel Line. I hope that they make submersible fuel line in black. ???
This hose should be submersible fuel line not standard fuel line. Submersible fuel line is designed to go inside fuel tanks it's expensive but will not degrade...
Great video. Thanks for the info.
Don’t know why I watched this video, I don’t have that problem, but I’m subscribing to your channel!👍🏻👌🏻
Thanks for watching and subscribing to my channel. Stay Safe!!
Great info!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching and commenting.
Thats ethanol fuel for you. Why they used regular fuel line in the tank is BEYOND ME. I would use a poly fuel line, not regular fuel line. In a few years, plan on doing that again.
Thanks for the tip
They make a new fuel line now for ethanol and it expensive
Good diagnose, and a good fix. It appears , the gas line wasnt put onto the gas pump correctly by some one at John Deere plant.
It make me wonder how many other thing in life are the same way.
om, It becomes scary when DOCTORS / PHYSICIANS, make terrible mistakes , like leaving a sponge in her body after surgery., My brother in laws Wife, yes a medical sponge left inside her.Not the first incident of a mistake/failure . Hope you have good day, and enjoy Memorial Weekend.
The JD Dealership would have charged you well over $400.00 for that repair.
I think your right. Anytime John Deere works on equipment it is very costly. Thanks for watching and Stay Safe!!
Rotten crooks!!
Looks like a gas can spout cap, some one dropped in tank when filling it
Good job thanks for sharing !!!
Having the same problem with my 304X, but it will keep running if I use the choke. I'm not a mechanic type but may attempt this.
Thanks for watching and commenting and as always Stay Safe.
