For years I remembered the almost unbearable tension without knowing the name of the film until I accidentally found it. 1953 was also a really good year for very notable sci-fi and horror trendsetters: THE BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS, DONOVAN'S BRAIN, HOUSE OF WAX, INVADERS FROM MARS, IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE, THE WAR OF THE WORLDS. Also, the year that widescreen CinemaScope along with stereophonic sound debuted with THE ROBE.
For the movie, Shane. Alan Ladd was short. They had to go through extra effort to hide it in the movie. At the age of 50 he was found dead of suicide. And a movie theater in England, the Projectionist said he was cutting the sound during the gunshots they were too loud.

I think that the guy that turns out to be the undercover German soldier in Stalag17 is also the first pilot in Airplane. I haven't looked it up but they look the same.😊
Another great list. Some other favorites of mine in the Noir genre are Angel Face, The Hitch-Hiker, Niagara, Pickup on South Street and Crime Wave. Also Anthony Mann's The Naked Spur. You coulda done your Jimmy Stewart voice! For those into the NOT top ten list there was also Robot Monster and Glen or Glenda?

Great Films one and All, Ugetsu, Wages of fear, Starlag 13, You missed the point a little, Everyone Hates the Smart Guy, Until the Shit hits the Fan and they need an Idea, ( personal experience) ,Mr Hulot's Holiday, Gloria Graeme ! ( better not say it) Ok I'll confess, my Favorite film of that year is, War of the Worlds, Fabulous Editing, knows exactly where it's going, and kind of funny.
I honestly prefer Sorcerer more than Wages of Fear, I thought the 1953 ending was odd, maybe it was just like Final Destination, you cant escape death, who knows. Sorcerer had a better soundtrack and interesting characters who were not just "black and white characters", the same way most Friedkin movies are. It felt like watching these criminals take a long path to hell.

Not an Ophuls fan? No Earings of Madame de... here and no Le Plaisir in 1952. I'd also try to find room for The Band Wagon and The Man Between.
