  • This video give you good information if you are trying to set your cam shafts so you can install your timing chain. if you have removed your cylinder head for any reason you may find that when you reinstall you will have valve to piston contact. Do not worry all you gotta is make a few adjustments before reinstalling your timing chain.

    Make marks on the back of your cams once it's set to TDC before removing the old chain... It's the simpelest way.. that way you know for sure where the old marks were and it will save you alot of time.. if you don't have colors on your chain, count the amount of teeth from mark to mark and color the links on the chain you will put on.. I've had to do that many times because I was using junkyard parts to get by..

    I have the same motor on 18 lbs.. your awesome with this thank you so much for making this video!! Now..... every time on a cold start I hear this fast rattle that lasts for a good second then goes away, as the motor warms up it gets even quieter but it can still be heard just a little bit.. Reving the motor does not make it worse, not even if you rev it cold. The rattle sound is coming from the timing chain side of the engine and is louder towards the top. I’ve been told it’s the timing chain and or tensioner. I’m also getting oil on my belt and other pullies and it looks like it’s either comming from the front main seal or someplace near bcs I’ve cleaned the entire surface and I’ll find fresh motor oil on the face of the bearing behind the crank pully unless it’s leaking from a more mysterious place lol.. With your experience man what does this sound like to you plz...? Also I’m a master at paint and body and I love giving away my knowledge so I’m here for anyone who has questions for me!! I should leave the link here to a vid of the car so you get a better understanding....

      awww found your question.......yes sounds like a tensioner not working correctly causing chain to rattle. may also want to look in to your oil pump. the rattle comes the tensioner not building up hydraulic pressure correctly or fast enough. the rattle normaly happens upon cold start up and last for about 10-30 secs or until oil pressure builds up. sounds like it maybe time for a timing job. As for the oil leak maybe try getting some UV dye and a UV light. introduce it to the oil and then let it run for min and see if you can pin point where the dye is coming out. thanks for watching and supporting.

    hi Matthew, I have just replaced a head gasket and while i was installing the timing chain top gears, the timing chain slackened off. I haven't stripped the engine down as you have, the timing chain cover is still intact. is there a chance that the timing chain may have slipped off the timing mark on the crank gear? Just trying to avoid stripping the engine down completely as i don't have the space or the time. Any advice would be appreciated.

    thanks for videos man really appreciate them! just resurfaced my cylinder head and while putting my cam sprockets i noticed i lost my marks on my chain. so as long as i have TDC and cams in correct position it shouldn’t matter how my chain is on?

    • @MattShaughnessy6
      @MattShaughnessy6  Před 5 lety +4

      ya know......I have been in situations where I did not have any marks on a chain or even a belt. so yes...so long as you know you have TDC you should be good. just make sure to turn the engine over by hand to check for valve clearance at least two full rotations.

    2002 Altima 2.5...I have the cam sensor code and timing over advanced code...through a little bit of deduction ive come to the conclusion my timing chain is stretched..car stalling...etc...it has 230k on the clock...sound about right?

    • @MattShaughnessy6
      @MattShaughnessy6  Před 4 lety

      Yes that sounds possible. Can you perform a compression test and leak down test? Either won could confirm this.

    • @jerrodcarter3773
      @jerrodcarter3773 Před 4 lety

      Matt Shaughnessy compression is good..within a couple pounds all 4 cylinders...I haven’t pulled the head...I was kinda hoping to avoid that if possible

    • @MattShaughnessy6
      @MattShaughnessy6  Před 4 lety +1

      Ok next try a leak down test. See if it holds compression. If you past that test I'd say wait on pulling the head we will try a few other things.

    • @MattShaughnessy6
      @MattShaughnessy6  Před 4 lety

      what about at start up? roc knocks and chain rattles can normally be heard upon start up and go with the flow of rpms...if you rev it you hear it get faster.........however i seen chains that only rattle when you give it the gas like you say......a "Knock" is pretty clear cut so if you find your self question a "knock" it mayb very well be a rattle and a chain.....Make sense?
