I really miss the burgundy cloth interiors in cars, someone has to bring that back somehow. It's just so comfy

My first car was a hand me down from my granddad, an 87’ Nissan maxima. And this is giving off such familiar vibes to that, though still this definitely looks a little bit fancier in a few small spots. Also pretty cool this is rear wheel drive. The maxima engine plate read v6 3000, so I guess it was a 3 liter, though still for our time now, not so much horses, just 152, but quite the low end torque to even out punch cars of the 90’s at traffic lights, (but maybe that was just me being 18/19). 😊. I could see why they would go with a smaller engine, the 87 maxima was pretty heavy in the nose with the transverse mounted v6 over the front wheels

Those missing B pillars and radio controls for the rear 😮🎉 make this 100000 times cooler than my old clunker maxima lol

Growing up in Australia back in the 70’s-80’s we had Datsun 280c which the Aussie version of Gloria and Nissan 300c , we use call them Japanese Buicks.

Finally the Y31 review. 🙂And also rare. Some Y32 reviews but almost no Y31. I love those old colourful interiors. And there were so many versions. The normal one in "Sedan" and "Hardtop" form. And some special models: A longer VIP version (longer rear door as well), the "Royal Limousine" from the Royal line (Gloria/Cedric Royal, President Royal and even an Elgrand Royal [4 seater!]) and a very rare cabrio version. And a ton of options!! And yes those stripped down versions you mentioned for taxis (sedan version). And was build until 2014! Also with many options for the engines. Commercial versions even came with LPG and some Y31 with Diesel (which is rare in Japan). I´d say of all the Gloria/Cedric generations this was the most versatile one. The first generation Cima was also based on the Y31.
The pillarless design for me is - besides the visibility of course - for optics. It makes it kinda modern and "sporty".
I also have a Gloria and a Cedric Y31 brochure.
Yeah they had so many sporty/sportscars as well as luxury cars back then! 😯

I love pillarless hardtops, and I love having the option to drive my Pontiac G6 convertible with the windows down and the roof up and get that experience. Speaking of Pontiac G6s I couldn't help but notice one just in frame at 9:54.

  • @losingmyfavoritegame8752

Those radio controls in the rear and the lack of a B pillar are so cool! There are a few Mercedes-Benz coupes that also lack a B pillar and the tiny window behind the driver door also rolls down! I didnt know there were sedans like that!

Fun fact , you could actually option these with an RB engine , albeit the most out there one, the RB20P which was an LPG gas powered RB20.

It’s crazy to think that it has such a low displacement V6. The only one that I can think is smaller is the 1.8 out of the MX3

Interesting Nissan uses a different badge/logo in Japan then in the USA. Back then Toyota used the Crown in Japan as a limo and for businessmen

It was common in 70s and 80s for each model line in Japan to have their own logo. The Gloria was a stylized crane while the identical Cedric had 4 pointed compass/star similar to Lincoln’s. The Carina Zack did video on has logo inspired by Asteroids video game

It looks kind of boring I bet it rides nice. It does seem a bit American yet higher quality. Imagine if American carmakers kept making hardtops and colored interiors. This car looks simple and functional. One reason for the relatively small engine is that part of the Japanese car tax is based on engine size. I find the common Japanese placement of fog lights next to the headlights interesting as fog lights are supposed to be lower than the headlights to better light up the sides of the road in heavy fog.

This one came direct from Japan. Very few Y31 hardtop models were exported. Australia and Europe received Y30 as pillared sedan
