CPUs have reached the point where significant performance improvements can only be made through better architecture design. Can't make the transistors any smaller, can't feed them infinite power and can't increase the clock speed forever. The only way to make them faster whilst changing nothing is to do an Intel move. More power, more clock speed = more heat. We are at the point where such chips are impossible to cool.
AMD is on the right path with better architecture designs. Apple will probably also have to go back to the drawing board now and refine their architecture.

I am excited for ARM for Windows but I do not trust Microsoft to pull of a translation layer anywhere near the speed of Rosetta 2. Not to mention Apple does not care about holding developers feet to the fire to get them to recompile for ARM natively. Microsoft does not hold the same power. Dude I remember when I bought my m1 Mac for 200 bucks off for early Black Friday deal the year it came out. Best deal I have ever gotten on a laptop. That thing still runs so well and can do anything I punch at it. Obviously I wish that there was more game support but aside from that everything else is covered.

There will always be rumours both good and bad but in the end all we can do is wait for actual products to launch with it and do the testing there instead of believing baseless rumours.

how about building two computers into one case? :)
so rather than making one CPU having more cores and or smaller transistors, actually double up the hardware. double cpu and double ram with some bridge hardware for copy paste and accessing screen memory.
so CPU one could run the OS and some Apps but the extra CPU would solely responsible for running the difficult apps like the adobe suite or whatever image and video processing. that way one CPU’s heat would not affect the other, the crash on the secondary CPU would not drag the main System down.
I get that the battery would be affected…
but the point is that shared workload would keep the individual cpu cooler the size of the die would not change therefore thermal limitations would not kick in and since they are independent computers in a sense all they have to solve is the merging of the screens and sharing the IO ports and with their dedicated 8 or 16 gb of ram they could manage it without swapping or waiting for one process to finish to free up the bus…
and with clever management the secondary CPU could be powered down if not needed.
in a way its scaling like we scale hundreds of GPUs to work on AI or bitcoin mining…

The os doesn't add that much overhead, additionally - most of the load on the SOC comes from GPU workloads. It's just that some company makes their computers as cheap as possible by making the SOC instead of traditional CPU + GPU configuration.

I still use my 2020 MBP M1 Max with 64GB every single day. It's still an absolute beast. If the M4 is even 50% more powerful than the M1, that's still way more than I actually need. It sounds like what Apple wants to do is add AI capability to the M4 so it can do edge compute. But as for sheer speed and compute, maybe Apple should just stop at the M4. At some point, do we really need even faster computers? I'm happy with more RAM and faster disk.
