    I always get sad when I see videos of the mall, a lot of great memories there. When I was young, my family lived about 45 minutes from it, it was a treat to go to Century lll. When I was older I frequented it often. Every Thursday my mom and dad who have since passed, would visit my sister who lived 10 minutes from the mall, to see the grandchildren, I lived in Pittsburgh at the time too, we would all meet at her house and go to the mall and eat and shop. It was a great mall in its heyday. It’s just very sad to see it abandoned.

      My mom has friends who had a sand there, it cost more to rent a stand there than a full site front at another mall. The absurd cost makes us think that it was a front for something, idk tho I’m no expert.

    A lost detail is that they used to play this relaxing, ambient keyboard music that echoed throughout the mall. All the cool ramps, stairs, and balconies made this place so iconic... every so many steps would look, sound, and feel so very different. It made you feel like you were exploring some kind of futuristic space. This place was more than architecture but a work of art just to walk through.
    For the holidays it used to be decorated to a sensory overload degree, basically an immersive experience and about as many features and details as any public space I've ever seen. In the right mental state it could be an absolutely transcendental experience.

    Its so freaky seeing you stand in places i remember standing when i used to go here with my dad. If i had known my visit in 2019 would be my last i would have taken pictures myself. The crazy dream-like architecture was always my favorite thing about the mall. Its crazy how flooded the floors are just 3 years past closing

    Born and raised about 20 minutes from the mall and worked at places within walking distance of it. Its a real shame how everything around it seems to flourish, but it was left to crash. Always wanted to check it out!

    This was the place to go if we were bored. Friend of mine had a Mazda RX-7 and we would cruise down here in it just to walk around and do nothing and buy nothing. There was a Taco Bell just over the hill from here and since there was none in our area, we always ate there. There was a movie theater about the same distance away. Could make a whole day out of going to the movies, the mall and eating Taco Bell (always brought extra $1 Frito Burritos home for later) haha

    @14:45, that is the old New Dimensions Comic store. They were one of the LAST hold-outs to leave the mall before closure. They moved - and I'd say are doing well - to the Waterfront in Homestead. Ironic, since the Waterfront opening in ~1999 is often listed as one of a handful of reasons for CIII's demise.

    I grew up in West Mifflin, I left in '72 when I joined the USAF. I was back home on leave in the late '70s and Century III was under construction. I've been there a few times since and saw the decline in the '90s.. It's a shame, that was a big boon for the community when it was built.

    Nice explore guys. I never knew this mall in it's heyday but I'd go when it was still open just to walk around and experience it. My aunt worked there in the 80s and she said when it was busy, you could feel the floors bouncing as all the people walked around - the ground has always been so unstable.

    I remember being in there when I was about 10 in 2017. Then came back on the last day jcpennys was open and seeing through the blocked door the water damage on the stairs. Now it’s flooding and covered in mold. It’s sad. Me and my uncle would explore the whole thing when it was open. Even when only the 3rd floor was closed we snuck up there and looked around. We don’t vandalized or steal. We record our walk and not touch anything. I would love to go back in there now and walk with my uncle to see it for one last time

    That comic book store, New Dimension Comics, is located in the Waterfront now, it’s sick, but I wish I could’ve gone while it was in Century III. I’m a teenager, so my only memories of Century III are going there to meet Santa when I was little (if it was still open, this would be the closest mall to us), and doing a thing for Girl Scouts with the Macy’s there, where we wrapped toys for less fortunate kids when I was 8-9. Would’ve loved to see it back in the 80s-90s, I’m obsessed with that look.

      @oreokitty333 Před 2 lety +1

      It's like 6-7 hours max. I grew up within walking distance of this mall and spent many summers on the Jersey coast as a child. If you hit 7 hours you're just doing the turnpike wrong. I used to get to Philadelphia within 5, and the Atlantic within 6 ½.
      Pittsburgh is East Coast but I also learned it was the "gateway to the midwest" growing up, so take that for what it's worth.
