He told me once off the coast of Vietnam towards Malaysia, he was in 60 foot waters he could see the ocean bottom in clear waters. He saw one that scared the HELL out of him! Said it was massive and monstrous. As big as the steam/sail freighter he was on. It followed the ship for days. He said he expected it to attack most likely at night and he was too afraid to sleep. As they went into deeper waters visibility was not very good and the crew lost sight of it. As a child to see father was scared as he told me this story sitting on our front porch, I believed him.

In ‘84 on our way to Puerto Rico from Texas, I was engineer on a tug towing large petroleum barges. I wandered to the wheelhouse early AM and gave the mate a break to perform his necessaries. 7:45 - A friend of mine who was part of a submarine crew remarked that there are things down there as big, if not bigger, than their submarine. The neoprene 'boot' on the sonar dome is regularly shredded by things in the deep and they've found those 'sucker teeth' in it that are more than six inches from tip to root... Considering each sucker can have more than a dozen such teeth it is worrying that something that big is down there.

There is another fish that can disable even the most powerful submarine. Cookie-cutter shark is about the size of a cat that attacks whales and takes chunks of the blubber. That small shark mistook submarine for a whale and forced the ship to return to the dry dock for repair. it happened circa 2013.

When put in perspective, due to their incredible range of vision and the fact that almost anything in the ocean can be a predator there’s a chance that a entirely different kind of species of squid could exist and with deep sea gigantism and some fish who are unable to reach shallower depths with out potentially dying from drops in pressure there could be squids even larger than the classes of giant and colossal squid we have documented on top of not knowing how long they can live we give their growth range a mean range based on potential growth and documented size leaving us unable to fully gauge the full size or potential size of a squid and combined with predators, disease, and biological specifications it would be extremely rare to see most marine animals reach full size or even die of age in the wild. Basically natures true mystery

Humpback whales are considered the most complicated from a social perspective. Octopuses may be the fastest to develop and best puzzle solvers. Cuttlefish are considered to be among the most intelligent invertebrates. Even when considering the purposeful cruelty displayed by dolphins, squid match that. They're called red devils, and they're highly social and sadistic.

That's how paranoid they were, in the pacific side of Mexico large squids have attacked men on small fishing boats. my family had been fishing in the sea for generations, who knows what some fishermen saw 100 years ago.

One of my greatest fears is the ocean or being stranded in the vast oceans.. knowing something the size of Godzilla that could be swimming underneath me just terrifies me deeply. I always watch those shows where people are often stranded in the ocean somewhere and survive and say that couldn't be me. I'd freak out before someone could find me.
I'm a retired fisherman and I can attest that they are giant creatures that lives in the depths of the ocean, something big rammed our fishing vessel and the damage was so severe that our ship was sinking, I lost all eight of my shipmates all I could see is these long tentacles coming out of the water, it looked like a giant squid. I don't know why I was spared, but suddenly I seen a school of dolphins that was near by and I swam close enough so I could grab hold of their dorsal fins, and they swam towards inland, I was close enough so I could make it to shore on my own, that was the last time I ever went out on any body of water, not even a lake, I spent most of my life fishing the ocean making a living, and we had a lot of close calls, but never any casualties, there are so many species that is unknown to man in the vastness of the ocean.

Back then it was only myths but I believe there are super giants down in the deep depths, if sperm whales have scars with deep lacerations then there are giant creatures capable of doing huge damage. I met some Mexicans who used to be fishermen in the Gulf of Baja. They said they stopped and became agricultural workers out of fear. I asked them what they were afraid of and they told me Humboldt squid they indeed called Devil fish. They said they are getting more aggressive as rhe waters get over fished and prey was getting harder to come by. One said his brother was pulled over board by one and killed. After that he was done going out to fish.
COLOSSAL SQUID have the clawed-hooks on their tentacles. Giant Squid have only serrated bony rings that leave their circular marks on the whales. Edit: Oh, did I get ahead of myself. Lol the only pics of a Collossal Squid he correctly showed, was the ones @ 17:53 of that juvenile Collossal Squid that he called a "Giant Squid". Marine Biologist have already estimated that the 1100+lb Collossal Squid that was filmed over 10years ago being netted onto that fishing boat was only half grown and less than 2yrs old.
One of my uncles in the British Merchant Marine in WWII. He had stories of sailors being pulled below by large tentacles and he had a set of the strangest scares I have ever seen. He said one grabbed him after his ship was torpedoed by a U-Boat. His shipmate hit the thing with an axe he was using to chop away debris to free their lifeboat. The scars looked like the ones on that Sperm Whale.
When we tested the sonar at the pier, I was required to warn divers and swimmers. The thing was so powerful that it could be used as a tactical weapon.

I know many like you have said this squid is frightening in appearance; but the first time I saw it, I couldn't help but think, how fragile looking it was. It has these long very thin arms that would not do well in a fight for survival, whereas the Giant Squid, Colossal Squid and even Humbolt Squid have these powerful looking arms. Now those are Squids that are truly terrifying when compared to their wimpy looking cousin. IDK, I just don't get why people find the Big Fin Squid so scary looking. I must be missing something.
Largest squid ever caught was a giant squid. 43 feet long (momentarily caught in 2018 off the coast of Japan) Heaviest was a colossal squid at 1100 pounds(caught 2007 off the coast of New Zealand) Two that may or may not be true: Japanese recorded a possible 53 ft beast- could not find the date. Scientist recorded estimated 59ft giant squid off of Cape Town south africa 2005 Biggest bigfin squid ever recorded was 21 ft-2001 Biggest magnapinna (family of squid bigfins are a part of) was 26ft (recorded off oil rig in Gulf of Mexico-2007)

I am with you on this. Nope I do not want to go on a cruise ship either. Too many things can go wrong, with no land in site. But I love the beaches, the lakes, rivers and white water rafting, canoeing, camping, etc... But I love to see these types of videos. Really, learning about anything, keeps the mind young. Sonars can be very loud, and by very loud I mean they can generate slow-rolling sound waves topping out at around 235 decibels. For comparison the world's loudest rock bands top out at only 130. Not all sonars are so loud, but it is safe to say that they can kill people at great distances when they are producing that sound. Now, squids don't have typical ears, but squid and other cephalopods detect sounds via paired structures, called statocysts, located in the head, so if that sonar was producing very loud sound maybe that was the reason why the squid "attacked" that ship and damaged that plastic wrapping around the sonar.
Interestingly a number of years ago the show "Monster Quest" did a show about Humbolt squid, they attached a camera to one and the video picked up a BIG squid. This thing was massive, they estimated it being over 100 feet. Now that was in the gulf of Ca. and the "tooth" sure looked like the ones on a Humbolt. Just sayn.

Most squid have been hunted by sonar since before mankind held rocks; there's been sufficient time to develop an adapted response to any kind of sonar: any squid big enough to mount a offensive would use that adaptation to zero in and charge the source of sonar, eliminating the threat or driving it away from the territory. also: see doc-reports of a serpent and a u-boat
I used to fish on the Snapper boats out of Galveston. They furnish the bait and tackle. I was at the back of one of the boats when they were cutting up bait. I asked what it was and the mate said this time they had gotten some giant squid and held up part of a tentacle to show me. It was huge! Normally they just had a lot of small squid and cut up fish, but these few giant squid parts supplied bait for everyone. But, it was also good bait and everyone got their limits that day!

Squid have one eye that directly control the nervous system. Without its use it is helpless. In Hawaii I learned that they are caught for food simply by reaching your arm down near them and as they wrap around it you bite the eye which immediately causes them to let go and you put them in your sack of others collected.
When I was a child I saw a huge sea turtle half eaten. Bitten clean in half somehow it managed to come to shore it seemed. I remember the cut on it was clear huge teeth bite. Orca? May be. Yes we don't know what is in the oceans. But also true in half a century or so only , we have lost huge amount of sea life. A repeat ocean expedition had found lot less number of sharks on the same path as previous one just some 50 years apart.

In the discussion of the Humboldt squid, he suggested they possibly go into suspended animation to cope with the extreme temperatures of Arctic water depths. That suggests it would be essentially inert but that makes no sense. They would be extremely vulnerable to predators and going in and out of a state of suspended animation daily, as he reported they rise to the surface every evening to feed, would be a horribly inefficient use of calories. Further, although he mentioned it in his list of theories on how they survive the cold, despite elaborating on others, he failed to even touch on any proposition this theory asserts. Although, clearly this channel is not the CZcams version of Scientific American, I found this a disappointing inclusion to an otherwise generally accurate discussion of these cephalopods.
They would be going into suspended animation very deep down where predators dont exist. When theyre not going up to feed they are deeper than any whale could ever go.

I read an account of a fisherman years and years ago, from Peru or someplace near there. He said that he would rather fall of his boat surrounded by sharks then to fall of surrounded by Humboldt Squids. He said a shark would most likely just swim past and not bother you especially after they ate. But the squids would just tear you apart for shits and giggles. He said that he has seen fishermen fall off boats during the squids migrations or breeding season or some such.. and be surrounded by dozens of them and eaten alive. I need to find the interview...

I suppose you can hunt giant squids, but the human hunters must have proper equipment like harpoons and swords and work in teams to cover each other's back, just in case the hunting missions are compromised (i.e., to end up in a loss of life.)
i remember that experiment on whales back in 1990"s they learned a lot but the camera broke off when the whale went very deep!! it was not a failure they learned more then they knew back then!
I think weight should be the deciding factor when it comes to squids measuring the length of the creature based on tentacles would be like saying Bugs Bunny is six-foot-five because of his ears

Those scratch marks are not made by Giant Squid, they are made by Colossal Squid. Giant Squid have suckers on their tentacles but colossal squid have basically meat hooks instead of suckers and because giant squid don’t have meat hooks the scratches can only come from a colossal squid which by the way are bigger than giant squid. There is a famous video on CZcams of one that attacked the side of this big fishing vessel and they caught it using big gaffs (long poles with insanely sharp bill hooks on the end).
Served on the Stein in the 80's. Biggest piece of crap in the Navy, a perpetual hard luck ship mostly known for suicides. We were known as "The Stain" because our stack leaked and we had a big sh1t stain down the stack. Makes total sense it was attacked by a giant squid.

During a boat race (I think near Morocco) a giant squid attack one of the ships and hold it for a while!

If they are that big, what are they eating? It would take tons of food to feed them.

As a US Navy veteran, I believe it. It's hard to believe that we haven't seen anything larger, due to the vastness of just the Pacific ocean alone

I'm a retired fisherman and I can attest that they are giant creatures that lives in the depths of the ocean, something big rammed our fishing vessel and the damage was so severe that our ship was sinking, I lost all eight of my shipmates all I could see is these long tentacles coming out of the water, it looked like a giant squid. I don't know why I was spared, but suddenly I seen a school of dolphins that was near by and I swam close enough so I could grab hold of their dorsal fins, and they swam towards inland, I was close enough so I could make it to shore on my own, that was the last time I ever went out on any body of water, not even a lake, I spent most of my life fishing the ocean making a living, and we had a lot of close calls, but never any casualties, there are so many species that is unknown to man in the vastness of the ocean.
@@gregsmith1342 that was most likely a colossal squid or “kraken” lol there’s pictures of those of renaissance times of explores ships being attacked and the shipmen having to fight them off. Back then it was only myths but I believe there are super giants down in the deep depths, if sperm whales have scars with deep lacerations then there are giant creatures capable of doing huge damage. Do you think it was a giant squid or octopus that damaged the ship you were on and what type of ship was it?
I met some Mexicans who used to be fishermen in the Gulf of Baja. They said they stopped and became agricultural workers out of fear. I asked them what they were afraid of and they told me Humboldt squid they indeed called Devil fish. They said they are getting more aggressive as rhe waters get over fished and prey was getting harder to come by. One said his brother was pulled over board by one and killed. After that he was done going out to fish.
COLOSSAL SQUID have the clawed-hooks on their tentacles. Giant Squid have only serrated bony rings that leave their circular marks on the whales.
Edit: Oh, did I get ahead of myself. Lol the only pics of a Collossal Squid he correctly showed, was the ones @ 17:53 of that juvenile Collossal Squid that he called a "Giant Squid". Marine Biologist have already estimated that the 1100+lb Collossal Squid that was filmed over 10years ago being netted onto that fishing boat was only half grown and less than 2yrs old.

One of my uncles in the British Merchant Marine in WWII. He had stories of sailors being pulled below by large tentacles and he had a set of the strangest scares I have ever seen. He said one grabbed him after his ship was torpedoed by a U-Boat. His shipmate hit the thing with an axe he was using to chop away debris to free their lifeboat. The scars looked like the ones on that Sperm Whale.

the longest squid ever caught was a big fin squid and is the most terrifying thing you'll ever see, it can reach 30ft and scientists haven't caught an adult , only juvenile ones. and the worst part is that we know almost nothing about it.. look up pics about it
I know many like you have said this squid is frightening in appearance; but the first time I saw it, I couldn't help but think, how fragile looking it was. It has these long very thin arms that would not do well in a fight for survival, whereas the Giant Squid, Colossal Squid and even Humbolt Squid have these powerful looking arms. Now those are Squids that are truly terrifying when compared to their wimpy looking cousin. IDK, I just don't get why people find the Big Fin Squid so scary looking. I must be missing something.
Largest squid ever caught was a giant squid. 43 feet long (momentarily caught in 2018 off the coast of Japan)
Heaviest was a colossal squid at 1100 pounds(caught 2007 off the coast of New Zealand)
Two that may or may not be true:
Japanese recorded a possible 53 ft beast- could not find the date.
Scientist recorded estimated 59ft giant squid off of Cape Town south africa 2005
Biggest bigfin squid ever recorded was 21 ft-2001
Biggest magnapinna (family of squid bigfins are a part of) was 26ft (recorded off oil rig in Gulf of Mexico-2007)

Sonars can be very loud, and by very loud I mean they can generate slow-rolling sound waves topping out at around 235 decibels. For comparison the world's loudest rock bands top out at only 130. Not all sonars are so loud, but it is safe to say that they can kill people at great distances when they are producing that sound. Now, squids don't have typical ears, but squid and other cephalopods detect sounds via paired structures, called statocysts, located in the head, so if that sonar was producing very loud sound maybe that was the reason why the squid "attacked" that ship and damaged that plastic wrapping around the sonar.
If a starfish loses an arm, the arm will grow back. But will the lost arm grow a new starfish?
Interestingly a number of years ago the show "Monster Quest" did a show about Humbolt squid, they attached a camera to one and the video picked up a BIG squid. This thing was massive, they estimated it being over 100 feet. Now that was in the gulf of Ca. and the "tooth" sure looked like the ones on a Humbolt. Just sayn.

Most squid have been hunted by sonar since before mankind held rocks; there's been sufficient time to develop an adapted response to any kind of sonar: any squid big enough to mount a offensive would use that adaptation to zero in and charge the source of sonar, eliminating the threat or driving it away from the territory. also: see doc-reports of a serpent and a u-boat

I used to fish on the Snapper boats out of Galveston. They furnish the bait and tackle. I was at the back of one of the boats when they were cutting up bait. I asked what it was and the mate said this time they had gotten some giant squid and held up part of a tentacle to show me. It was huge! Normally they just had a lot of small squid and cut up fish, but these few giant squid parts supplied bait for everyone. But, it was also good bait and everyone got their limits that day!
I used to be in with a bunch of seamen, but then I got lodged in a cell for nine months, give or take a few. I tell you what I grew a lot during that time, but came out a big baby.

The problem with indeterminate growth is that eventually the specimen outsizes every trophic level and simply cant get enough to eat, they then slowly starve resulting in the associated aggressive eating habits.

When scientists cut open sperm whales sometimes the found many many squid beaks in their stomachs as it wasn't able to digest them.
On land predators such as Siamese pythons, digestive processes would Not waste more energy to digest those "tough" bones due to the damaging effects to the digestive system with hydrochloric acid prolonged exposure. Oh, where is my Pepto Bismo (RT) ?

Squid have one eye that directly control the nervous system. Without its use it is helpless. In Hawaii I learned that they are caught for food simply by reaching your arm down near them and as they wrap around it you bite the eye which immediately causes them to let go and you put them in your sack of others collected.

In the discussion of the Humboldt squid, he suggested they possibly go into suspended animation to cope with the extreme temperatures of Arctic water depths. That suggests it would be essentially inert but that makes no sense. They would be extremely vulnerable to predators and going in and out of a state of suspended animation daily, as he reported they rise to the surface every evening to feed, would be a horribly inefficient use of calories. Further, although he mentioned it in his list of theories on how they survive the cold, despite elaborating on others, he failed to even touch on any proposition this theory asserts.
Although, clearly this channel is not the CZcams version of Scientific American, I found this a disappointing inclusion to an otherwise generally accurate discussion of these cephalopods.
They would be going into suspended animation very deep down where predators dont exist. When theyre not going up to feed they are deeper than any whale could ever go.

I read an account of a fisherman years and years ago, from Peru or someplace near there. He said that he would rather fall of his boat surrounded by sharks then to fall of surrounded by Humboldt Squids. He said a shark would most likely just swim past and not bother you especially after they ate. But the squids would just tear you apart for shits and giggles. He said that he has seen fishermen fall off boats during the squids migrations or breeding season or some such.. and be surrounded by dozens of them and eaten alive.

Those scratch marks are not made by Giant Squid, they are made by Colossal Squid. Giant Squid have suckers on their tentacles but colossal squid have basically meat hooks instead of suckers and because giant squid don’t have meat hooks the scratches can only come from a colossal squid which by the way are bigger than giant squid. There is a famous video on CZcams of one that attacked the side of this big fishing vessel and they caught it using big gaffs (long poles with insanely sharp bill hooks on the end).
Served on the Stein in the 80's. Biggest piece of crap in the Navy, a perpetual hard luck ship mostly known for suicides. We were known as "The Stain" because our stack leaked and we had a big sh1t stain down the stack. Makes total sense it was attacked by a giant squid.
