Based off your experience for the cost do you think berd spokes or something like sapim cx rays are better value?
I know against ti spokes these days it's not as easy to justify cx rays unless you need aero, but against berd spokes might still make sense. Both are lighter and stronger than conventional spokes and can handle higher tension.
After drilling those hubs, can they be used with conventional spokes anymore?
I'd say maybe. It depends on how much material you remove from the hubs in the process of taking off the sharp edges. Eventually, there wouldn't be enough material left to hold the end of the spoke under tension.
In our experience, once your hubs have been prepped for Berd spokes with this method, standard steel spokes will no longer be 100% failsafe for use.
@nobl wheels: 2 months ago I made one front wheel with the spoke length recommended by the berd spoke calculator.
But I think they are too long, to have some room for truing in the future. The nipples are fully treaded.
I am thinking to use in the future at least 3mm shorter spokes as the calculator. What is your experience? How many mm shorter than the calculator?
Berd spoke length calculations can be quite nuanced. Feel free to reach out to us @ride@noblwheels.com and we'll help out the best we can!
what are your spoke nipples covered in? Talcum powder? Is that to make them easier to install?
It definitely makes things easier. It is Stans spoke powder, it acts as a lubricant when threading the spokes together and then a thread lock once the wheels are built.
