  • @DennisHicks78749

    The bad thing about that particular VSI joystick is that because there is no separate controller, it is expensive to replace. The good thing about is that, unless there is a motor fault, replacing it almost always solve the problem if it is not a loose connection or other easy adjustment. You can find them on eBay and some WC-related website used for about $250 right now. That is probably the cheapest fix. Most places won’t actually troubleshoot and repair the small circuitry on the board of the controller. Rather they will swap the board or the entire controller.
    Those controllers can have different wiring harnesses coming out of them, depending on the chair you have. If you get a different wiring harmess, you can open the controller with either a “T15” driver once you remove it from the chair. Then you can swap your wiring harness onto that controller. But only do that if the replacement controllers wires are different from yours, or if it appears damaged. In that last case, your should have paid bargain prices for your replacement part.

    • @DennisHicks78749
      @DennisHicks78749 Před rokem

      That is for the DIY hardy. Most people will be better off hiring out this process. But if you read my description and thought ‘I could do that’, you’re probably right. If you can’t figure out how to remove the controller from the chair then you will definitely need help.

    • @DennisHicks78749
      @DennisHicks78749 Před rokem

      Most electronic circuit boards these days are so complex and compact that most repairs consist of swapping whole boards or components. Few techs actually probe the boards, de-solder and replace the tiny parts at fault. There are specialty shops online that do this. But often it is cheaper to source a working used replacement. There is some risk to this. But if you buy it off of eBay and it is faulty though reputed to be working, eBay will have your back.
      On my jazzy chair, I keep an extra controller on hand tgat I bought used and then tested on my chair. That way only motor faults can put my chair out of commission.
      I am working on sourcing replacement Left and Right motors. Beyond that, it’s just wheels and tires. Chairs using this VSI controller are super easy to troubleshoot and repair.

    • @astrosmell
      @astrosmell  Před rokem

      Dennis, you make some spot on points. Those VSI PCBs are triple layered. You have to be a whiz to work on them. Thanks for your input.

      @@astrosmell yes, and though I may make it sound pretty accessible to work on these things, I”ve had a lot of trial and error, frustration, and money spent on the wrong or broken parts. Now, based on previous experience as well as the chairs I ride, I can generally troubleshoot and fix them myself. But it has taken me a while to get here.
      So it is not for the feint of heart, but I am a die-hard DIYer and can’t help myself. I carry a toolkit with everything I need to work on my chair in the back of my seat so I won’t have to crawl out to the garage for tools. I also have replacement parts on hand.
      Also, some may not know that if insurance paid for the chair, they’ll probably pay for repair and even a rental ride while it’s in the shop.
      Those trouble codes can even help the less tool-hardy among us. It may point out an easily-resolved problem or that it’s time to call the shop!
      So I will never again have a brand of chair if they don’t make trouble codes/ troubleshooting steps/ technical manuals available to the general public.

      @astrosmell  Před 6 měsíci

      Clare, Is this a brand new chair with new batteries, or is it new to you. Sounds like a battery issue. If you check the batteries and they are good, you should test the charger next. Batteries will go bad in six months if they are not kept up. Frank 352 999 4477

      How should I test the batteries?

    • @astrosmell
      @astrosmell  Před 6 měsíci

      Using a multimeter check each battery. Look for 12.3 ish volts on each. Of course if the batteries are hooked up incorrectly, they can produce only 12 v to the module, you should be getting 24+ Volts to the module. Also it is possible to have 1 bad battery, that will effect the system the same as 2 bad batteries will. Frank

    Most times the joystick is giving an error code, look up the troubleshooting process for your particular chair with your particular joystick. Most of the times it will self-diagnose. If the technical manual doesn’t say exactly what is wrong, it will usually give several options, as well as how to parse which it actually is.
    Some manufacturers do not release this information to the public. For that reason, I never buy one of their chairs.

    • @DennisHicks78749
      @DennisHicks78749 Před 2 lety

      @@lxespitia396 there are certainly dishonest people in the wc biz. I do not sell or service wcs as a business.
      However, I am mostly able to repair my own rides. I am not sure how much time you have spent diagnosing and repairing wcs. My personal experience has been that the error codes are very helpful.
      Also, even if someone does not intend to repair their own ride, having some knowledge as to the nature of the problem before paying someone to fix it can help prevent being taken advantage of.
      I have definitely seen bad advice on CZcams vids posted by wc repair people. But if people check the manufacturer’s error codes when there is a problem it is never harmful to them and sometimes can be very helpful.
      In fact, some wc makers do not release technical cal information to the general public, not even the meaning of error codes. I never buy from those manufacturers because I want to do any repairs I can and not be subjected to the high price and long wait times using a wc repair service entails.
      Do you see what I mean?
      I am not sure I understand your perspective, so if I misconstrued what you are saying, my apologies.

    • @DennisHicks78749
      @DennisHicks78749 Před rokem

      You’ll want to do a search using the specific Jaír and model and “error codes”, or “fault codes” or “troubleshooting”, or “technical manual” or “service manual”.
      If that doesn’t work, usually the electronics are made by a different company than the wheelchair manufacturer.
      If you can find the part number for the joystick and/or the controller, using that you can usually find the manufacturer of those parts, and THEIR part number for them. Often that manufacturer will publish error codes/ troubleshooting processes for their equipment.
      So it is clear I don’t know that kind of information about your chair and so can’t provide an answer to the actual problem.

And it works fine, but as I use it through out the day when I should only be down 2 or 3 light it goes to one red light that sometimes blinks and sometimes not. Sometimes when I turn it off and on again I have the lights back but not for long. I plug it back in to charge and it says it is fully charged in 2 to 3 hours, which I know is not right. I sent it in to the people who do my chair but they say nothing is wrong. They say it is not the batteries. I have been in a wheelchair for 37 years I know when one is not working right. Is it the controller?

      I am sure this is no longer relevant because you posted so long ago. But if you want to use error codes like flashing eleven times, you can usually find out online what that means. But you have to have the make and model as well, because there is not a universal error code system. It varies from make to maker and model to model.

And I know I'm not describing the controller it's just a horn on off joystick and five or six LEDs one red and the rest yellow I think
    The literally is not much wear on this chair I can tell that I just wonder if it has a problem and is it worth $400 it's really good shape is from looking at the tires and whatnot I'm just scared of it might have set for a week or two with really low batteries and I was worried about that charger that thing was getting too hot but the fan was not running

      I am not sure if you are serious. But as someone who has bought new and who has bought used, I would never buy a wc that is not 100% working, unless it was super cheap and I was buying it for parts.
      Also, when someone says they just put new batteries in it I usually shy away, unless it is priced low enough for me to replace batteries.
      Most brands of wc batteries are not worth the money, but they are going to want more money because of the crappy batts they just shelled out for.
      Also, they may have just put new batteries in six or seven months ago and never charged them once. If lead acid batteries are not kept charged up, they are damaged by the low level of charge. I would rather buy a chair that works for a price that included needing new batteries so I can put in a set of top quality batteries myself.
