  • Highlights from my hike through Leita Thompson Memorial Park in Roswell, GA. Check out my Slow TV video (link below) to experience the whole hike with me!
A brief history: Leita Thompson was an early female banking executive in Atlanta, who purchased 107 acres of land off of Woodstock Road in Roswell, GA in 1946 to use for a "vacation property". Roswell is now a bustling suburb of Atlanta, but at the time it was a sleepy country town far outside the city limits. Thompson eventually moved onto the property and lived there until her death in 1978 at the age of 83. At that point, the land was donated to her Leitalift Foundation, which she created to continue her work in helping other working women with retirement assistance, disability, housing and social and professional recognition. In 2001, the Leitalift Foundation deeded the land to the City of Roswell Parks and Recreation Department for use as a public park.
The land is virtually undeveloped, save for a pavilion and gardens built in honor of Thompson. A loop trail system runs through the park, and connects to an offshoot leading to nearby Mountain Park Elementary School. The approximately two mile trek makes for an easy, interesting hike, with streams, babbling brooks, a small fishing lake, and bird and deer sightings. This hike is tucked away just off a busy road, and a mere hop skip and jump from big box stores and subdivisions galore.
