I love how Vinny says "Let's-a go?" like Mario has never said that before in his life and is disgusted with the idea he would ever say that.
yeah who the fuck says that
Its because of how completely unnatural it sounds when said by Crisp Rat in his Crisp Rat voice.
Yeah, but it's probably because of the voice. It sounded so weird with Chris Pratt's "tired" voice, you know.
definitely more to do with Crispy Rats delivery of the line rather than the line itself
Nice strawman. Vinnie obviously knows "Let's-a go" and he knows the old Mario cartoon Boon Walker voices, since he dubs them himself (better than Pratt can). The issue is that Pratt's "Let's-a go" sounds wrong coming out of his voice.
It's understandable that Vinny would like to see New York City in a movie, since it so rarely gets depicted in film and TV.
Is this ironic
Cartoon character in real life New York
Jape?
huh? New York is a real place?
@@errorhouse4925 No it is completely serious.
See, the thing is, Chris Pratt worked really well in The Lego Movie because Emmett was specifically SUPPOSED to be the most generic/boring guy ever, so it fit perfectly. But that is not the case for Mario, so it does not work nearly as well for this role IMO
yeah, alot of people defending him think we hate chris pratt, its not that at all, its just that he sounds like he's putting no effort into the role, and why him over any other VA
@@klayman2 I think in general, Chris Pratt has been putting less effort into roles recently and im not quite sure why. The GOTG Christmas special was good but Chris Pratt did not act well in that either.
And Mario isn't a normal plumber from Brooklyn? This is an origin story, so Mario isn't our beloved princess-saving, koopa... stomping character that we all know.
@@justinian1226 Yes, but it's just how unenthusiastic he seems about being the voice for Mario. I wouldn't mind him being the VA for Mario if he wasn't this unenthusiastic.

Charlie Day uses his normal voice for Luigi: Flirting
Chris Pratt uses his normal voice for Mario: Harassment
Thank you! All of these people are completely ignoring Charlie Day playing Charlie Day, like I'm expecting him to start talking about the Night Man and milksteak. I think Chris Pratt is an awful casting, but so is Charlie Day
I mean almost every character I've seen charlie day play is at least a little neurotic (which I'd argue Luigi is) and his regular voice lends itself to that, chris pratt is doing less than just using his normal voice, at least if he were I'd find it passable at least...
Charlie is a better casting choice
Almost like one of them fits the character's general persona and the other doesn't.
@@yosha101 Neurotic sure, but it doesn't mean that just using your normal voice is acceptable. I'd take a bad VA trying to fit the character over Charlie Day's take on Charlie Day any day.

It’s shocking to me how GOOD everything looks. Like, this is going to be a visual treat regardless of how good the movie actually ends up being.
Illumination stepped their game tf up. Though frankly Grinch is beautiful too, it just sucks.
Unfortunately, visual treats usually don't stand the test of time. These animators deserve to work on films with better scripts. I hate to base my opinion solely on two short trailers, and I hope I'm proven wrong.
@@UncannyValleyVideos I heavily doubt Nintendo will let illumination shit this one out
@@br3akstuff tbf, Illumination films generally look pretty good, the backgrounds and colours are usually pretty nice. But this film looks incredible
The environments look awesome, and so does bowser, but man I can't stand the human faces. Mostly the glassy eye balls, but the shape of their faces is weird and reeks of illumination, which I didn't think was a bad thing until they tried to adapt another ip and defiantly chose to use their same old style

"Get out of here, Chris Pratt. You did the wahoo."
Why does it sound so funny hearing Vinny say this?
Cant wait for the fan-cut, where Mario is only using his gibberish voice lines from the Mario & Luigi games with subtitles.
Would make the whole movie experience far better
I fully plan to watch the French version with subtitles instead
6:50 In the Brazilian dub, UniPic Luigi is dubbed by Manolo Rey, who also dubbed several roles from Charlie Day and *Sonic,* including both movies. And it fits with Martinet's Luigi very well, surprisingly.
The Brazilian dub is really good overall.
I'm glad the Brazilian dub sounds the way it does - especially Toad!
Like i not even a crazy mario fan but the BR dub made me wanna watch the movie
brazilian dub is getting praise everywhere and it warms my heart because y'know they actually chose VOICE ACTORS for it and there are times our dubbing overshadows the original stuff in many instances
@@homerjackson3880 The French one is also really good! If I ever watch this movie, I'd wanna watch either the Brazilian or French versions.
I'm worried about Gnorts as we get into these colder months. Vinny, let him borrow a flannel or something :(
I like seeing Vinny irl, it’s so chill.
In the french dub the Wahoo sounds just like how Charles' would do it for a mainline game
I'm so glad we got a reaction from Vinny, a second Vinny, and Gnorts. You should do group reactions like this more often.
Take note peeps, Vinny is proud, "that he didn't go for the low hanging fruit" yet still felt the need to comment on it.
Something I’ve noticed is that most of the comedy seems to come more from physical and prop comedy than it does from lines.
And that’s a good thing!
it's right behind me, isn't it?

That could mean we might even get more of the type of comedy we see in the Mario RPGs, namely Mario & Luigi, and less of the corny cliché comedy in your average Illumination movie.

I really like the part where they unenthusiastically reacted to something Mario said with "That's super, Mario. Let's all go."

Mario Strikers Peach showed up to this movie lol
She literally sounds less like Peach than Pratt does Mario.
When Arlo said that Chris is bringing down the whole movie I can definitely feel it, it’s sad that if anyone has an issue with the movie its only with Mario’s VA and we are all just trying to focus on the positive
I'm one of those people tbh.
I'm HEAVILY considering if I should watch the French dub or another good one.
Chris is just so bad. Especially his "screaming" when Mario got hit by a Bullet Bill. I refuse to believe that was the best take they could get. Either Chris refused to try or the director didnt care. Either way I hate his voice
@@justinianthe1st790 Same. Even Charlie Day is actually trying and I actually like him as Luigi. Pratt will ruin this movie if he talks too much.
@@PaulYourGuide Oh definitely. Honestly, everyone except Mario sounds pretty good even if it's not the voices we're used to. Which makes his performance stick out even more.
Someone will definitely edit out crisp rats voice out and replace it with other dubs/existing Mario voice clips and I can't wait for those versions.
Call me crazy, but I honestly would not be able to stand Charles Martinet's Mario voice speaking in complete sentences trying to have more emotions than just "Here we go!" for an hour and a half. Imagine him trying to sound somber, afraid, or introspective with that voice.
Every time I see the part where Luigi yells "Mario!" I hear a response in my head in the voice of Frank Reynolds/Danny Devito yelling "CHARLIE!" from the IASIF episode where he fell backwards out of the window.
01:05 That's almost the exact same gag from the first trailer but with different characters.
Yeah, but reversed left to right lol.

Well it is an Illumination film, they have like 4 jokes
Kind of...
Small Penguins throwing ineffective snowballs at Bowser isn't the same joke as Mario getting beat up by a giant Monkey...it's got the same kind of energy due to the camera change though.

"What I really want out of this Mario bros. movie is more of like what they did in the '93 movie."
I do completely understand the desire to want to stay away from leaning into Peach as a DID, but I can't truthfully tell you I'm happy about it. She's such an iconic damsel, like definitive, she's like the one that should be popping into your head at the first mention of the word. And of course that doesn't mean she's useless or can't be given anything to do, like Vinny said Paper Mario really gave her like a whole b-side of the game, which was one of my favorite parts of it. Damsels can be characters if treated the right way, but y'know, it's not hard to imagine people just wanted to do something different altogether. Which is... fine, I guess? Idunno, Peach is kinda my hero, so I'm biased here, I'm not happy about it but I can't say it doesn't make sense or seem like a reasonable thing to do from the perspective of the producers or whoever made the decision. So I guess it's not as big of a problem as Chris Pratt simply refusing to do his job as an actor and pretend to be Mario for a whole 90 minutes. Like, THAT'S stupid and there's no excuse for it. But Peach being a bad ass girl boss? Like... yeah I get it, sure.
And the thing about it is, they're straying away from the tone of the relationships between these characters from the game, too. Bowser here is like a serious threat and actual bad guy, so you get the impression that he doesn't race karts or play golf or board games with everyone else on the weekends, and that if Peach were to get kidnapped in this movie it would be like legitimately non-consensual and idunno maybe that's bad for a kid's movie these days? So in that context, making Peach the mentor figure to Mario's fish out of water kinda thing seems very sensible from a narrative standpoint. The only problem I have there is, like... if Peach is so capable and can do things for herself... why the fuck does she need to bother with Mario? Like she's clearly exasperated at his failures early on in his training, and she can use fire flowers and has a big fuck off battle axe, so... ? Right? Like okay, so you can't make the only woman character in this kid's film a damsel with no agency, sure, got it, fine, so instead she's perfectly capable of handling herself... but... also can't. Like she can't fight Bowser. So that battle axe is just for show, and no, actually, she doesn't have any agency or ability to save herself from the situation with Bowser's invasion and desperately needs a fat little italian plumber man to do it for her. Cool. But also, like what?
Overall this still looks really fun and cute and will probably be a fine movie and everything it really needs to be. But I just, like... idunno, it's making these weird decisions. I guess thinking about it, the games themselves aren't narrative focused, and as a result when you take them on the whole you do get this world view where everything is just a fun game to these characters, which is very in-line with the brand, but when you turn that into a movie there's a lot of blank room where the plot of a movie like this would go that they don't really elaborate on, so I guess they just have to make some choices sometimes. And I guess I should be grateful that the choices they're making are more just "wow that's weird" instead of the utterly insane and baffling ones made in the '93 movie, but... like even that movie had the princess get kidnapped. And that wasn't even Peach!
That fire flower effect was absolutely awesome.
If they do a “Patty cake, patty cake pasta man! Give me pasta power as fast as you can!” bit, many may think it’s a stupid bit
But it’s the greatest stupid bit of all time before absolutely demolishing an enemy

most sensible plan I've heard
I don't like how Vin kept talking over Gnorts.
That's not a brand new kong on the left side of Funky Kong, some have thought it's Kiddy Kong, who was long absent for a decade.
It HAS to be Kiddy
Someone should show Vinny the TV spot that surfaced online. It showcases even more of Mario's voice and it actually seems to be growing on a lot of folks from that.
I really wish we could get like a Vinny commentary track of the movie, I probably won't bother watching it on my own, but I would with that.
I predict that when the mayro movie comes out some giga turbo nerd(s) are gonna go back and give it the star wars OG triology treatment with a complete re-dub. Someone with a solid charles martinet impression and a lot of deep cut editing.
18:59 Even if it's not good, I'll still be happy Miyamoto is fulfilling all his Mario dreams. He deserves a movie of this scale.
I'll never get tired of Vinny's disdain for Mario's voice, especially with a New Yorker "Get outta here!"
A commercial for another country leaked, but in English with subs. And it’s a whole segment of Mario with Toad using pipes in the Mushroom Kingdom that wasn’t in any trailers. We hear more of Pratt’s Mario, I find his voice a bit raspy, but he seems to reach the right tone when he’s in pain or seems upset. But I’m starting to get use to it
They put so much time and effort into nailing the visual aspects of this movie, making sure everything looks and feels like it belongs in the Mario universe, but I honestly don't think I can get over how some of the voices _sound_ like they're just lines being read rather than characters being played. Like, the Mario characters don't speak often, but they _do_ have established voices/tones/energy and some of the acting really just falls too flat for me to overlook it (and, yes, it may be bad voice direction rather than bad acting, but my point stands)
Its has fucking marvel writing. This will definitely be one of the movies of all time.
Nobody looked at the camera and said "Yeah, that just happened."
I'm looking forward to the training section being recreated in thousands of Mario Maker levels.
I'm happy with all the voices heard so far, except Mario's. Pratt's delivery feels very underwhelming, especially when compared to some other language versions. To be fair though, that half-hearted "wahoo" at the end seems to me like it might be on purpose. Mario looked terrified just a moment before and could be doing the "I meant to do that" thing while actually just being relieved he even survived.
I feel the same way for the “Let’s-a go” during the Donkey Kong fight. Feels like the character is building up his confidence since he’s still going through his training arc or what have you. Not that I’m defending Pratt, but there most likely is a method to the madness.
@Viewtifulyoshi I agree. I don’t normally condemn much of anything until everything about it is revealed, so I wasn’t too harsh on the performance going in. Seeing how things are with the direction of the story, it makes more sense for Mario to not be as enthusiastic as we all know him to be. If it’s because he’s not going to be some confident badass from the get-go and instead be a regular guy, then that’s understandable. But if there’s no change, then that’ll be a big problem
@@MetaGiga You know I never thought of that... you might be onto something.
@@Viewtifulyoshi I'm pretty sure that's what it is. He's not confident in his ability at all. I mean, he's PRETTY clearly whispering "let's a go" to himself before getting pounded by Donkey Kong.
@@MetaGiga just let it go man. Nintendo crafted a beautiful movie for the fans with lots of references but yall still on about Chris Pratts Voice acting SMH. You can see that he's at least trying to sound like mario. Enough with the petty stuff
Vinny out here hoping gamers never grow old and yet here he is, looking not a day over 27.
The french version seems superior when it comes to Mario's voice!!
Thank you Vinny for reacting to this
I like how over it he looked whenever mario spoke or when a movie trope happened
