My dad died at home and the funeral home sent 2 women to pick him up and we say that JT would have gotten a kick out of it. The funeral home that we dealt with was professional all the way.
Lauren, could you do a detailed video on the arrangement conference? What does the family say when they first come in? Do they talk about their loved one and what happened? Do they ask to see their loved one right then? And what do you say? What do you say about procedures, embalming ( have you already seen the person at this point)? How do you bring up costs? What other information do you need from them? What other questions do they have? Is there anything beyond usual that might go on? Thanks, Jane

Ok, also ask if they have pets & where they're located. If at home, tell them to let the pet in with them while they wait if the pet isn't already with the decedent. If they're not at home, when you make arrangements, set up a time for the pet to see the person. This will give the pet closure because it's harder for the family to later see that pet waiting & looking for that person & they do know because you emit a scent when you die that pets can pick up on & it lets them know that the person is gone.
And ask if it's an older house because they may/will probably have more narrow doorways, hallways, stairways, & sharp turns at ends of hallways that the cots may not fit through. Also in Wisconsin, you'll have to get a 'removal permit' from the coroner in certain situations.

This5b such a great video!! I think funeral homes are one of those places that you never see what goes on “behind the scenes”. It’s one of those unknowns and with human curiosity we just want to know what all goes on. I know that when I’ve lost loved ones, I would have liked to have known everything that they did and exactly how they cared for my loved ones. I’m so glad that you’d shed some light on what happens when you take over care. Thank you for all that you do!! This field of work is definitely where you’re supposed to be! You’re exactly the kind, sweet person that every family needs when they are going through this difficult time.

The most difficult thing is getting doctors to sign the DC in NYC. Many aren't on eVital, the city's mandated system
Can you discuss what happens when you have a very overweight person with transport or a an extremely traumatic death where the body might not be in the best state?

Im part of the removal staff at our local funeral home. There's really no other way to handle an overweight transport specifically. What we do is we call the fire Dept if we need the help lifting a person. Traumatic deaths. Depending on the situation will already be dealt with just cuz those deaths normally are dealt with by the medical investigator and police then we get called to pick up. Alot of the times they are already in a body bag. If it's a call from the hospital er. We pick up as is and transfer the body to the funeral home and put in refrigeration. This is how I've handled alot of these calls. I know I'm not little miss funeral but hopefully this helps with the insight 😊

My great grandmother had to be transferred to a different funeral home after she died because the funeral home who had her was too expensive and wanted to charge for the same thing 10 times. (That was an exaggeration) My question is, funeral homes sometimes server as the coroner, so if the funeral home which is the coroner has to pick up the body, and the family doesn’t want to work with that funeral home, do they have to be transferred or? This is actually a common question (at least where I live in Kansas), if a funeral home serves as the local M.Es office then generally they will have policies in place for the storage of remains regarding funerals not brought through them, often these regulations are arbitrary but there are a few municipalities that do regulate the storage of remains that are not yet claimed by a funeral home for care.
