    I remember the Amy Bishop case, because I'm from Braintree and have been a teacher and professor for many years. School teachers as well as professors often have tenure. They are hired provisionally for a year or two, then become full members of the faculty and after a specified time acquire tenure. The reason for tenure in the public schools is similar to the reason for union membership, to prevent unjust firing or unfair assignments, make it difficult to keep salaries low by constantly hiring inexperienced people and firing the more experienced members. As with unions, the intention, though good, can become corrupt over time. The problem in universities as well as in some government and business positions is that people in secure jobs may over the years become less productive or out of touch. People holding secure positions for decades are preventing younger people from achieving promotions, and may become authoritarian. Unions often have a situation like tenure, usually referred to as "First Hired, Last Fired." This is to protect the older workers in case of cutbacks or malicious firing. Abuse of both systems is fairly common, judging by my own observations and what I have read.
    This video is a great Twofer. Two interesting, one of them very useful, topics in one!

    Thank you for analyzing the Amy Bishop case. Someone I love was one of her targets and I have difficulty making sense of the whole thing. She is obviously an unstable person and I certainly do wish the Massachusetts police had done more to protect the public they serve back when she shot her brother. Also, what up with that mother who protected Amy after shooting the brother? Definitely, something was going on there.

    • @jacquelineshamliancousins4750

      The mother was friends with the Braintree Chief of Police and convinced him not to file charges. Nowadays possible homicide investigations in Mass. are handled by the state police not the local cops to prevent someone getting with murder as she did here.

      Sorry for your loss. I can't imagine what that would be like to lose someone close to me who was working in an environment where the very last thing you would expect to happen would be they were shot to death. In some ways, this case reminds me of the Jon Benet Ramsay case, where I'm convinced the little girl's brother accidentally killed her and the parents came up with the most ridiculous kidnapping alibi imaginable to protect the son.

    • @rsnide1891
      @rsnide1891 Před 3 lety +2

      My university has moved away from that system. Obviously the ones who are tenured were not stripped of their tenure,just grandfathered in, but they’ve quit using that system. The system we currently use is still ranking, but requires evaluations (the higher ranking faculty members’ are more spread out, not annual) and poor evaluations lead to an action plan or failure to renew contract. It allows for some seniority without the hard-to-touch aspect of tenure. Evaluations consider student evaluations, as well, which really ups the accountability for instruction.

    • @trace9657
      @trace9657 Před 3 lety +10

      I work as an adjunct when I have the opportunity. I have an MA, not a PhD, so I am only eligible to teach the lower level history classes, basically I teach Western Civ to non history majors who are only taking the class to check off "general ed" requirements. I am good at it, and I never want to stop learning more, I wish I had the opportunity to teach more often. I am comfortable in my own skin when I am in a lecture hall, and for the most part the students respond well to me.
      It is frustrating that there is little to no opportunity to access a full time position. As ridiculous as it may sound, I do believe that history is the foundation for all learning, second only to literacy. It is also frustrating that I am relegated to Western Civ when I am far more qualified to teach Russian\Eastern European History
      I pay my bills with an IT job that I grateful for in a monetary sense, but it has no intrinsic meaning. However,, I cannot get a PhD and work full time. I nearly came unhinged finishing my MA with a full time job. I know I would not survive working on a PhD while maintaining a job outside of academia.
      That said, I suspect your comment is related to the increased use of adjuncts to replace actual profs as FTEs. Even though I enjoy being an adjunct myself, I also see wide spread use of adjuncts as problematic. We do not have the one on one office hours available for students, and I know for some adjuncts, teaching is no different than waiting tables, it is just another part time job. There are no benefits, no security, and no chance of promotion. Universities are becoming more corporatized, and with that the principles of leaning and critical thinking are relegated to the back seat.

I remember professors working so hard for the invaluable “tenure.” I agree that system is totally broken. My biggest question with this case is how in the world did she just walk away with no charges from likely murdering her brother? Additionally, holding workers at the car dealership at gunpoint? How, how, how, did she just walk away from this with no charges and go off to college...it makes absolutely no sense, none at all. Thank you for covering this case, it has always fascinated me, a total tragedy that perhaps could have been averted after what she did to her brother. In all seriousness, the tenure system (in North America, at the very least) is, indeed, brutal. My mother attended Tulane, where one of her favorite professors committed suicide after working there for years and being denied tenure by several colleagues who simply didn’t like him on a personal level. I can’t imagine working so hard at a relatively low-paying career in academics, becoming an expert in your field, and then essentially losing your job and retirement plan at the age of 55+, all because you didn’t get along well with some of your colleagues.

    We have brought a new line of behaviours into the DSM manual which has this set of behaviours associated within itself:
    - Varieties of specimens to analyze, from the last century up to the present.
    - Specimens analyzed range from Past Presidents, to Criminals of the common type, to purely detestable characters of all types and sizes.
    - Possesses genuine dead-pan humour (not the Walmart variety)
    - Unable or incapable of laughing at own jokes (or appears to be serious at all times)
    - Has extensive knowledge of tenure, but willingly discounts it as being non-advantageous
    - One who has superior knowledge of firearms, of all types and ranges of application
    -# knows details of what constitutes a Herpes Bomb and can keep this well hidden
    -Extensive knowledge of any type of Diner chair, especially at IHOP in and around Peabody
    -Is a tenured professor
    - Is reasonable and even-tempered
    Anyone willing to guess who would fit this description should submit it to the evaluating committee for the next DSM-6 review committee ASAP. T
