I found your tutorials here on you tube and have been using them to teach myself how to play the violin. A couple of months after I started I asked if I could play the violin of a violin instructor who happens to play at our church for a few minutes. She asked me a few question and said I must have a good instructor as she watched me play. I later learned that she was Anne Akiko Meyers first instructor. I'd say that is high praise for your tutorials. Good Job!

You have a very beautiful bow hold Allison! Nicely separated , natural and elegant! I REMEMBER MY 4TH GRADE VIOLIN TEACHER SAYING TO KEEP FINGERS SEPARATED. THATS ALL WELL AND GOOD BUT I THINK ITS MORE IMPORTANT TO RELAX, PLACE PINKY ON TOP AND EXTEND INDEX FINGER LIKE JOCHCHIM. IM PARTIAL TO FRANCO BELGIAN, BUT ALSO LIKE TOYING WITH RUSSIAN AS WELL.

its fine you are supposed to loosen when it goes to bet=d and tighten when you play if of course. The screw can come all the way out, but just put it back in. Although when you take the screw out, the frog can come off the wood as nothing is holding it in so make sure when the frog goes back it is NOT TWISTED. The frog will move as you tighten it as it has to to tighten the string. I think all is well by what you say.

I have watched well over a dozen videos and noticed that the finger placements (minus the thumb) are different in each. Moreover, the instructor nearly always will say "put your middle finger here" and within seconds his or her middle finger is somewhere else. Or they will say "keep your pinky curved" and then immediately show a perfectly straightened pinky on the bow. From all of this I conclude that, apart from putting some part of the end of the thumb in the gap between the frog and leather, the rest doesn't really matter except insofar as the thumb acts as a fulcrum and the hand can flex to do whatever it needs to do. I've given up on instruction. Ask 10 violinists how to hold the bow, and you get 10 different answers. You really do. You want another 10 different ways? Just ask 10 other violinists. So, the upshot here, I think, is to take Maestro Allison to heart when she says there is really no one way to hold the bow. How many bow holds are there, really? I would answer by asking how many violinists are out there.

+Jim Doe You took the words right out of my mouth!!
I actually made this video off the back of some very nasty comments I got saying that i didnt know how to hold the bow, I should learn that first before I start making videos bla bla bla, as people just dont get that there is indeed MORE THAN ONE WAY!! It drives me up the wall being told im wrong!! LOL
Basically as long as your thumb is in between the frog and ferrel and making sure your fingers are flexible and can move into any position, the sky is basically the limit!

I believe you've mentioned over 30 years of playing and performing, and if you were criticized for your bowing hand position position, I find that crazy! I took one lesson over 30 years ago now, and the instructor was a lifelong concert violinist who showed me the exact same basic rules. There may be minor differences as people advance, and find the correct , 'ease of movement' position, for hand size, and personal preference. However, to begin with, people need to have a good sense of the position that will improve play,, and avoid producing squeaks and squawks. Later, you have made another videos showing how the hand flex is incorporated into smooth, advanced bowing technique. If students have developed bad habits early on, they'll never achieve the beautiful sound they seek.
I, personally, find that this position is excellent. Though I have control with my index finger, and my hand flexes naturally, I hardly feel as though I am holding the bow at all - or my hand is just a guide as my wrist movement stays subtle and smooth - and this is where that hand flexibility comes in and is SO important!
I think haters are a a measure of success. It can ONLY be driven by jealousy.

Today was my first lesson. Interview with instructor and first points, holding the bow. The bridge and to see if I could make a sound. She gave me a 3 note scale to practice. And in time I got home, how do you hold the bow? Allison your videos are great. I think first one i saw was on amazon demoting the ciellio or mendini violin, and to find you have others is nice. I'm sure ill be watching than as I become more discourage of my progress or lack. I do get easily discourage and there's probably an easier instrument to learn at 54, but my mind is an open blank book to be write on.My instructor seems nice and would love to smile with pride teaching me. She asked my goaon for what i expect in class. To make it through a few lessons before my violin has a collusion with my wall. But serious, tie be able to play some scales by end of year- 2 months. My violin is probably bottom of the line, as I didn't want to rent or spend a lot on something thatMay be a disaster.A Gibson-Baldwin. Music Education set, though I don't see them advertised anywhere- except used. Maybe A worthwhile investment till I decide on a better one.

These are the basic , after the basics are learned you can always experiment but if you start playing badly , sounding bad or just need a rest ,,, you always go back to the basics . It does hurt ,,, but as you've said ,,, anything new you have to get adjusted to . Thank You again , for All that you do for all of us .

Should the pinkie be straight? When I do this, I frequently have a tendency of having the pinkie get "locked" straight so that it doesn't bend easily again. It feels like the bow is pivoting around my thumb and the weight of the bow gets supported by the pinkie. Once the bow is on the violin, part of this weight goes away, but the finger remains straight.

Hello madame. I've just started my first violin lesson about 10 minutes ago, and I really need help about how to hold the bow correctly. My teacher basically said that there are three ways of holding and the style of holding it differently from yours. So here's how he taught me to hold the violin: thumb placed at the wooden piece between the pad and the frog, pointing finger at the silver-y thing, middle and ring fingers beside the thumb touching (different) and the little finger rests. Wrist to elbow straight/flat, loosened muscles. So it's kinda different, is this good or bad? Should I worry?
This one is not related to the video, but how much rosin should I apply to the bow (I forgot to ask my teacher)?
And I'd like to thank you for all the online lessons especially your friendliness, like really, you're really kind. I am also very happy that I saw your video about whether or not people are too old to play violins. And if I may, I would be delighted to see your response to this question and my further questions if you will to. Nevertheless, thank you.

Richard Wiwi I would do what your teacher says. I cant really comment as i cant see you plus I never like to interfere. If you trust your teacher knows what they are talking about (and we hope they do) then listen to them. Since i know nothing about what went on really, I cant comment. Applying rosin depends on how much/often you are playing. On average, weekly? Ask your teacher as again, since you are paying for lessons im reluctant to interfere with their process too much

The Online Piano and Violin Tutor I see. Well then, thank you for the response. It seems like I've been applying too much rosin that it starts to leave rosin residue on the strings of the violin.
      Once again, thank you.

Hello. Thank you for your videos, specially those of how to hold the bow and how to bow, I think technique is very important if you want to 'sound' good when playing. Getting to the point: I have noticed I am having problems with my left hand (even pain) and have no 'technique' on: (1) how to hold properly the violin, (2) reaching the right spot of the string avoiding over stretching my fingers, (3) press properly the strings so I can get the right tone.
I've been playing just for two months, but if you have a video on how to achieve a proper way to move/set the left hand, I would appreciate it. Thank you very much.

+J. Obando I dont have a video specifically targeting those issues as such, but I do explain all these issues within other videos - especially my beginner videos.
This also might be a good time to drop in and have a one-off lesson with a teacher to get you going with this and past this section as Its not something I could personally advise you on without seeing you. I do offer Skype lessons that can be one off, of you could find someone local to you.

Hi Alison, my bow doesn't have the gap for the thumb, it's a cheap £70 violin. I can get the bow hold correct on a pencil but fail on this bow as I'm improvising what with it not having a gap. Is it because of this that I can't get it correct on the bow? I will be buying a new one soon Thanks

The Stentor 2 is the Stentor 1500 and the Stentor 1 is the Stentor 1400. Get the 1500 as its better than the 1400 for a little more money. I dont know why but in the UK they are 1 and 2 and USA is 1400 and 1500.

I am playing since 13 years now and my teacher this week just realized appalled, that my bow holding is so wrong, that I am completely unable to play spiccato.
But I´ve also got a problem, when I tried the bow hold you showed.
I´ve got pretty long fingers and tend to "flatten" my hand, so when I try to not curve my thumb as you showed I get curve in the knuckle below, where the thumb is just connected to the rest of the hand. I can´t remove this inner shifting by power, do you know how I can practice not to do this? It tends to put some tension into my hand, why I curved the whole thumb til now as being not as bad in stealing my free movement.
I am also a lefty, so I am missing a bit of strength in my right hand.

    Hi,
Every time I hold my bow my thumb feels uncomfortable, and it gets dented/squished . I've had this problem for a long time. How much of the thumb are you supposed to fit between, as I can only fit a quarter when the bow is tighten normally. The bow is student quality that came as part of the outfit. I'm not too sure if the gap for my thumb is too small or if it's supposed be like that?

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  Před 8 lety

+Jayson Pearce-Hall It might be that the bow does not have that much of a gap, but as long as you are holding it there and not on the frog or the rubber/ferrerl part, you will have a correct hold. I only have the very finger tip, tip (if that makes sense) on the bow, so that my fingernail almost wedges up into the wood.
