    This song is a perfect example of how Pink Floyd's music is relevant, today. You discussed this as an actual current attack on Trump, when this was written about English politics in the 1970's.

    As others have said, "Whitehouse" is a reference to Mary Whitehouse, a socially conservative old bag who was never off British TV in the 60s, 70s, 80s, railing against everything from televised violence to loud music to anything remotely sexual. It's cool that we can relate the song to today's politics, but it's actually got nothing to do with the US government directly.

      It's true that verse was written originally about Mary Whitehouse, but I listened to this song for two decades before I ever knew that, because it fits so well with our "Whitehouse" politics. So much so that I believe Waters himself sort of revamped it for that purpose, specifically for Trump.

  • @MattKrogmeier
    @MattKrogmeier Před 4 lety +82

    The Whitehouse reference was about Mary Whitehouse, Conservative British activist who was against the “permissive” times...but the song as a whole has evolved into a very anti-Trump piece in Roger Waters live shows. Check out any of the performances from the “Us & Them” tour to see what I mean!

    Hey Sori, I’m Sebastian who paid for this, no worries on not being too into the song, it’s all good 👍🏼 It was still a great reaction because I always love the discussions that come after the song is over, especially the longer discussions, I watch them all to the end. 😁 and Vin, you need mentioned how Pink Floyd should come out with an instrumental record. In 2014 they released their first album in 20 years called The Endless River which was almost entirely instrumental. The only song that had vocals was the final song on the album called “Louder Than Words”. All the other songs are instrumental. Very ambient, very relaxing music. I’d actually recommend the song Louder Than Words just for the fact it’s the only modern day Pink Floyd song, like with actual lyrics and stuff, plus it’s a genuinely good song.

    The Whitehouse they're referring to is Mary Whitehouse, a British conservative campaigner who was very influential in the 70s and 80s pushing an anti-liberal social conservative agenda, particularly in the arts and media. However, while its a very specific reference to her, it's amazing how one can apply the lyrics to that other Whitehouse.

    • @lbd-po7cl
      @lbd-po7cl Před 4 lety +1

      PS. Mary Whitehouse campaigned aggressively against pop and rock music and tried to get many songs banned. She’s on record as saying “the whole 'pop' scene has done more than anything to destroy the manners upon which Western society has been based.” Everything from Elvis to the Beatles, Bowie and Pink Floyd were her targets, often for very innocuous lyrics. Basically, she was a real prude! She even sought to ban kids TV shows like Doctor Who and The Goodies (Brits and Australians will know how absurd that is!).

      Just a few things: Richard Wright (they piano/keyboard player) passed away from cancer in 2008 and really, there is no Floyd without him. Waters and Gilmore just do not get along, at all. This album needs to be listened to as a whole to get where it's coming from. As for Vin, there is only one band that comes close...TOOL. Stay safe, stay healthy

      The problem I have, is this: Animals was created during a time when it was conservatives who were the moral busybodies and social censors. The members of Pink Floyd, Rodger included, grew up in that era. The album is railing against authoritarianism and censorship, which, at the time, was the remit of the right side of politics. However, in the modern age, that has completely flipped. Where the conservatives were the holier-than-though censors, it's now the left-wing, 'liberal', democratic side of politics that have taken up that mantle.
      If Pigs was written, here, today, it would be squarely aimed at authoritarian leftists(diversity is our strength brigade), not conservatives like Trump. He is a mouthy and uncouth bulk of a man, but he is not a tyrant nor an authoritarian, and has very laissez-faire approach to freedom of expression, including artistic. Yet, write a satirical song about the LGBT in the UK(I'm gay btw), and under current British law, you can go to jail for that... Under the 'Malicious Communications Act'..
      To appreciate the intentions of the song properly, which transcend time, it is better understood as a statement against censorship and artistic limitation, and it's not the conservatives responsible for that anymore...Especially in the case of the UK.
      As I said, Rodger grew up in a time when it was the conservatives seeking to silence him, so it's understandable that he superimposes that onto Trump. But, it's ultimately misguided and no longer accurate. Things change after decades, especially in politics, and Rodger hasn't caught up with that change yet. Other musical icons have, however, such as Jonny Rotten of the Sex Pistols, and Morrissey .

    The title of the song is Pigs(Three Different Ones), so yes, they are talking about three different persons. My interpretation is that the first verse refers to business men/capitalists in general. The second verse makes reference to Margaret Thatcher. The third verse references Mary Whitehouse.

    To be honest, the Secret Service makes the call on going to the bunker. Trump could say no, but in cases like that, the President usually goes by what his security team says. For him to lie about it is crazy. He could have easily blamed the Secret Service. What's ridiculous is that The Press knows the procedure. So, reporting on it is a little disingenuous on their part.

    • @paulriddle7818

      Every president has had people protesting screaming along the fenceline. This is the only president that actually went into the bunker for protesters. The others said no. They even would stay at the window wondering if they made the right decisions. This is why bunker boy and bunker bitch were trending on social media

    You're not supposed to be exactly in love with the "pig noise". It represents loathsome disgust. The low point of greed, selfish nastiness. That's the point. In recent concerts, Roger Waters did this song in dedication to Donald Trump, who eitomizes everything this song is about.

    The Animals album was on my turn table forever. I played it till the needle practically wore through the vinyl. I should listen to the entire album again, someday. Btw, it's the secret service that decides to take the president/vice pres to the bunker. Typically they just grab the president and whisk him away. But you are right, Trump doesn't need to make an excuse to go down in the bunker.

    Animals sticks out among the Pink Floyd discography for many reasons, one of them being just how 'different' it is....yes its beautifully written and performed, yes in moments there is a blissful drifting of ones mind...but the purpose of this album wasn't one of comfort or to illicit warm daydreams. It is purposefully jarring, and abrasive at times, things like the pig squeals snap you back into reality, and that's exactly where they wanted you. This is a true concept album through and through, and the concept is awareness and social justice. Holding the pigs, and dogs and sheep accountable. We all have a role to play.

    Just so you know, no one in the band was happy with the quality of the recording of the entire album (Animals), saying it was way too rushed. There has been a big movement to try and get the album remastered. Roger Waters even addressed this in his rant a couple of weeks ago. Aside from that, one of may favorite PF albums. I will say this album has my great guitar solos! Gilmour really shines!

    Song references Mary Whitehouse a British Politician.
    The song is just as cheeky in Waters' true sardonic style, calling the pigs a “charade” and even pointing criticism to British politician Mary Whitehouse by dropping her name directly in a lyric-and, perhaps incidentally, confusing American listeners into believing that the lyric was critiquing the White House itself.😅

    The line about Whitehouse was about Mary Whitehouse who was a British social conservative but given current events the Whitehouse line could be about the events of today. Sori you're cool but damn, this song is a masterpiece! I'm not gonna be too hard on ya though. Like most people my age I was introduced to Pink Floyd by The Wall and The Dark Side Of The Moon, they're an easy intro. However, as I've aged and lived life Animals has become my favourite Pink Floyd album and I think if you keep listening you'll feel similar. This album grows on you big time.
    And yes, Margaret Thatcher is not looked fondly upon by very large segments of British society.
