  • Jam along with the Grateful Dead from 1972: www.dead.net/playingintheband
"Playing In The Band" developed from an earlier piece, "The Main Ten," a jam that was performed a number of times between 1968 and 1970. PITB was first performed by the Grateful Dead on February 18, 1971, and was played live regularly from then through to July, 1995. The song was a major vehicle for improvisation. Early versions featured a modal jam in the key of D Dorian. Later versions featured a Mixolydian Jam (D Mixo).

Wow I've been playing the intro wrong this whole time. I appreciate your attention to detail. It's harder than it looks

This is sweet thanks Craig. If you need another one, please consider Jerry's parts for Jack Straw circa 1980.

Could you maybe do a video on Jerry’s parts/solos for the Maker as played with JGB?

Craig, I really enjoy these videos. I was wondering - could you please put the tablature at the top instead of the bottom? When I pause, the video controls on youtube obscure the notes a bit when they are at the bottom. I do need to pause often to learn this stuff. Thanks so much for this content.

Here's a Tip for that issue I've been using: Slow down the playback and don't touch the mouse until the control bar disappears and then do a screen shot with the WIN+shift+S command (on Windows). It gives you plenty of time to capture the lower section without obstruction.

Thanks for another great video, Craig. Might there be a chance for the Dear Prudence intro in the future?

Hi Craig Have you heard the sound check from Atlanta 12/12/73? I am blown away by Jerry's soloing over a Heart & Soul jam - can you explain the nuances of what's going on there? The solo seems to be expanding/rolling in, on, and out of itself, I've heard this quality in other Jerry solos but it seems pronounced here and I was curious about the scale type and technique - czcams.com/video/TNi0wdoV880/video.html
