- In this lesson we're going to take a look at the Hunter/Garcia composition "US Blues". Despite its name, this track is all but a traditional blues.
We're going to take a look at everything we'll need to play this song from start to finish: The intro (as heard on the album as well as live alternatives), the basic rhythm parts, walk-ups, lead lines, and Jerry-isms, as well as Jerry's guitar solo from the "Mars Hotel" recording.
Stick around and you'll be wavin' that flag in no time.

This is such a quality channel
Love to hear that!!! 🙏
Your lessons rock man, one of the best channels for learning dead tunes. Rock on brother 🎸
Fantastic! Thank you for teaching!
Wow! That's incredibly helpful. Thank you!
Thanks. Lots of nice info. That said, I wonder why you're using the studio version. I've heard this song hundreds of times and it's never sounded or felt like a standard blues to me. Despite the title 🙃. So while I have no doubt that you're theoretically correct, and that studying this lesson will pay off, eventually it will need to be "thrown away" to sound right. To use a jazz expression, it sounds "square" compared to the live versions.
I've been working on Sugaree as a way to learn Mixolydian and triads up and down the neck. Watching a video comparing live versions from Jerry to John Mayer was extremely helpful. Tremendous learning experience.
Thanks for the video.
wave that flag, wave it high and wide! Thanks for the great videos, Happy 4th!
When he said "ok if you liked the vid subscribe" etc at only 2 minutes in, did anyone else think they had blacked out and missed the last 20 minutes? Just me? Ok cool. Great channel btw.
LOL! Totally get your point, but got to put that reminder up front because not everyone sticks around until the very end. Glad you like the channel!!
Yup
Thanks so much for this! Hope you had a nice holiday!

Best Dead channel on CZcams! I've used your He's Gone Bobby lesson more than just about any other. Any chance we might get a Bob demo of US Blues/Wave that Flag? He does some awesome work in early '73, like 2/9/73 and 3/28/73
Just caught your channel, good stuff! (also see you have the same PRS as me (ha!))
I love that guitar!!
Think you might be able to post a video for Corrina? Also would love to see a video for the race is on from reckoning ❤️💙
can you please do "Morning Dew" by the Dead, studio version or any version for that matter...I would be forever grateful literally haha
Great lesson ...is there any way to print out your tab for US Blues? ... the Internet service is pretty slow here so difficult to follow when the there are gaps in my service ... thanks
Great lesson -- but can't quite figure out how to download the tab for the US Blues solo -- do I need to join a group to be able to download? Thank you
Did you ever get an answer?
Where can I find the backing track for this?
Thanks for commenting, Melina. I never uploaded the backing track for this one, just used it for the video. I'll upload it tomorrow.
Where is the tab available please?
Great lesson. Guitar is too low. Can barely hear it. Thanks.
Thanks for letting me know.
